MKUltra | Case File #115
9268
They experimented on unwilling subjects in the 1950s to control peoples' minds and create super soldiers. And it's all real. In the early 50s, as WWII was ending the Central Intelligence Agency was being formed in the United States, paranoia was high about the technologies and weapons of war that were being developed in Russia and China. In order to anticipate a perceived threat of experimental mind control techniques being developed by foreign actors, the CIA implemented its own research arm with a goal of creating ways of controlling peoples' minds and even turning people into sleeper agents against their will. It's one of the most horrifying things that the US government has ever done that we know of. Fordlandia, Hilariously Failed Utopia | Case File #111
3281
In the 1920s, Henry Ford, inventor of the assembly line, tried to create a utopian capitalist city in Brazil. It was essentially a slave camp. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, American companies discovered a wealth of natural resources in Central America and basically decided to take it for all its worth. Tons of American corporations pillages the countryside, taking over countries, buying up all their land, and forcibly becoming their largest source of economy. In 1928, Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company, tried his hand at it with a rubber-mining company town he dubbed Fordlandia. The Cute Copaganda of Sam & Max | Case File #110
6986
It was an indie comic that became a seminal 90s point & click adventure game. Its the little franchise that could and still endures to this day. In the late 1980s, Steve Purcell created Sam & Max - a zany, madcap comic about a buddy cop duo of a talking dog and a weird bunny rabbit creature named Sam & Max. Then he got a job as an animator at the famed Lucasfilm Games studio. Eventually, he was approached to make a game based on the characters. For the next few decades, this franchise persevered solely based on Purcell's unstoppable insistence on cheerleading for these two delightful characters. And, somehow, we've gotten dozens of pieces of media about these beloved talking animals. In the mid-60s, Chuck Barris got his start producing daytime television. He produced shows such as The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and even was the host of the Gong Show. But, all the way, he struggled with inner demons and family tragedy. And, according to him, was also working for the CIA as an assassin. The Motel With Secret Surveillance Rooms | Case File #98
5597
For decades, this motel in Colorado had a secret network of surveillance rooms in the ceiling where the owner spied on his guests. Nobody knew until recently. The man was Gerald Foos, and he purchased a motel in the 1960s, outfitted it with a secret crawlspace in the ceiling where he could watch people inside of their rooms, and spent years spying on his guests - witnessing things like drug deals, lots and lots of sex, and potentially a murder. One day he decided to tell a journalist - Gay Talese. The two men would keep the secret for years until they finally decided to tell the world. How Batman Was Stolen | Case File #87
7344
Batman is one of the most well-known fictional characters of all time. He was completely stolen from his original creator. In the late 1930s, a new comic book character hit newsstands across the country. He was called The Bat-Man (later on just Batman), and he quickly took the nation by storm. Over the years he could go on to become one of the most popular characters - comic book or otherwise - ever conceived. And, as we all know, he was created by Bob Kane. He was credited as the sole creator, writer, and artist behind Batman, he appeared in countless interviews as the creator of Batman, and he even had a cameo in the 1989 Batman movie. However, he didn't actually create the character at all, and in fact shameless stole credit from another man. Arthur Conan Doyle, Fairy Hunter | Case File #84
5266
He created Sherlock Holmes, the world's most famous detective. He also believed in fairies and magic. Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's literary creation, Sherlock Holmes, took the world by storm and became one of the most popular characters of all time. Holmes was known for his dedication to science and his brilliant deduction skills, and the man who created him equally valued these skills and - by many accounts - largely based the character on himself. However, as his life progressed he lost interest in Holmes, and instead became passionate about studying the paranormal, psychics and mediums, and literal fairies. One of the most famous movie directors was involved in the death of a legendary actor and two children on his set. In the early 1980s, hot off the heels of several hit movies, director John Landis was hired to direct a segment from the Twilight Zone movie being produced by Steven Spielberg. After a series of shady decisions - most of them illegal, Landis ended up directing a scene at 2:30 AM featuring an actor, two small children, a bunch of fake rain and explosions, and an actual helicopter. Disney VS the Air Pirates | Case File #78
6608
They stole Mickey Mouse and put him in comics where he did drugs and had sex. The legal battle they fought against Disney saved free speech. In the late 1960s, newspaper cartoonist Dan O'Neill wanted to walk away from his job at the San Francisco Chronicle with ownership of the copyright to his comic strip, Odd Bodkins. But they wouldn't give it to him. So he hatched a plan. He'd start sticking tons of Disney characters like Mickey Mouse into his strip and then get Disney to sue him, which would force the Chronicle to give him the copyright back to avoid legal liability. But that wasn't enough for O'Neill. He formed an underground comics collective called The Air Pirates, and started producing comics that completely stole classic Disney characters and put them into situations that the house of mouse would never approve of. This would be the start of a 13-year-long legal battle that would see Dan and the Air Pirates broke, in danger of paying millions of dollars in fines and facing possible prison time, and also fighting for the very concept of free speech. Citizen, Orwellian Nightmare App | Case File #77
5498
It's an app where people can learn about and report crimes in their neighborhood. It's designed to make us spy on each other and stoke fear. In the mid 2010s, Andrew Frame and his company launched an app called Vigilante which was literally designed to listen to police scanner broadcasts, alert users of crimes in their area, and encourage them to go...be vigilantes. The app was immediately shut down by all app stores within 48 hours. The Worst Dating Service Of All Time | Case File #75
6382
The Dating Ring was a service that flew single women from New York City to go on blind dates with tech bros in Silicon Valley. It didn't go well. In the early 2010s, dating startup The Dating Ring got into the Y Combinator program and worked for several months trying to develop a successful business model. They cycled through many different ideas, the founders fighting and struggling to feel confident in their abilities. They finally settled on the bizarre idea to take advantage of the shortage of available single men in the New York City dating scene and the shortage of available single women in the San Francisco dating scene to launch possibly the strangest company idea ever - to ship a bunch of single women to Silicon Valley to go on awkward blind dates with tech bros. Ashtar Galactic Command, Accidental Religion | Case File #74
4298
An airport owner in the 1950s created a weird story about time machines and aliens to get more business. It ended up becoming a religion. In the late 1950s, George Van Tassel was running a small airport in Giant Rock, California. One day, out of nowhere for this seemingly normal clean-cut business owner and family man, Van Tassel started peddling a story about how he'd been visited by an alien who had given him plans to build a time machine. The story was clearly meant to drum of word of mouth hype about his airport so that more people might visit the various tourist attractions and restaurants on the property, but that didn't stop his wild story about Ashtar the alien and the Galactic Command from getting co-opted by the New Age movement in the 1970s and turned into a legitimate religion that still exists to this day. Man Who Killed 19 Aliens With a Katana | Case File #72
5105
He claims to fight extraterrestrials on his ranch in Arizona on a daily basis, and to have killed 19 of them with a sword. John Edmonds and his wife bought Stardust Ranch in the late 90s so they could retire on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona. However, quickly after moving in they discovered that the place was swarming with aliens from another world. Or so they claim. Edmonds says that dozens of these aliens warp in from their spaceships and attack him on a daily basis, and he defends himself using nothing but a katana. He also claims to have personally killed 19 of them, and he has a bloodstained katana to prove it. But is any of this true? Well, obviously not, but the story and this guy are super fascinating. Unmaking of Shane Carruth Pt. 2 | Case File #70
16339
He created some of the most inventive films in history, but his continued struggles with Hollywood would lead to a dark, self-destructive spiral. In the early 2000s, a software engineer from Texas decided to spend $7,000 making an independent film about time travel called 'Primer.' The movie would go on to win at the Sundance film festival and become a huge cult hit. He would go on to spend the next 20 years struggling to get more of his films made - with increasing frustrations with the Hollywood system and their lack of support of his ideas. He made more films, and wrote some that would ultimately never see the light of day, but eventually his growing bitterness and resentment towards a world and an industry that rejected him would cause a dark and unforgivable downward spiral. The Man Who Got Boobs on a Bet | Case File #68
4832
In the late 90s he got breast implants to win a $100k bet. 20 years later he still has them. In 1996, Brian Zembic, a somewhat eccentric gambling addict, entered into a wager with a fellow gambling friend that he would get breast implants for an entire year for $100,000. He did it, but then after that year he kept the breasts, and has basically crafted his entire life and personality around having them. The weird transphobia at play in this decades-long publicity stunt is troubling and fascinating, and the man at the center of it is a strange and unsettling figure - not because he's a man who has boobs, but because of why. How Konami Screwed Hideo Kojima | Case File #67
11195
He created the Metal Gear franchise and became one of the world's only mega-famous video game designers. And then his company tried to erase his legacy. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Hideo Kojima crafted some of the most interesting, as well as most successful video games in the world. He created the Metal Gear franchise, which experienced massive critical and commercial success over the last three decades. However, in the 2010s there started to be a sea change in the video game world. Things were shifting away from the big-budget, story-driven experiences that Kojima was known for - and more towards a pick-up and play mobile experience. And, as a result, the company that he'd worked for since 1986, Konami, unceremoniously kicked him to the curb and tried to erase his legacy. This is the story of the life and career of Hideo Kojima, and how he got screwed over by Konami. -- "The Bombastically Meaningful Futility of Hideo Kojima" was written and edited by Andrew Price. It's one of the most truly strange films ever made, and we are going to delve into how it came to be. Ultraman In Thailand | Case File #64
4380
A Thai production company licensed Ultraman for one movie, but they'd try and illegally build a bootleg empire with it. In the 1970s, a production company in Thailand was given permission to produce a single film utilizing characters from the popular Japanese series, Ultraman. However, instead of just doing the one movie, the company decided to just act as if they'd been given partial ownership of the franchise. They started producing their own original movies and tv shows using Ultraman characters. When the owners of Ultraman tried to put a stop to it by taking it to court, the Japanese court bafflingly upheld the Thai company's claim that they had the rights to the character. What would ensue became decades of building a crazy bootleg empire that would ultimately culminate in a bootleg Thai Ultraman theme park. Disney World Has Its Own Government | Case File #57
6454
Disney World was originally supposed to be a futuristic city, but it still has its own creepy corporate government. In the mid-1960s, Walt Disney was bored with his animation studio and frustrated and dissatisfied with the creative freedom he had with the 160 acre Disneyland theme park he had just built a few years prior. So he set his sights on something bigger. He was going to buy up a massive plot of land in Central Florida and build a private, corporately-owned city of the future called EPCOT. It's was going to be home to 65,000 people, with tons of businesses, jobs, schools, and factories, and it was going to set a technological examples for every other American city that was 25 years in the future. But before they could build this city, they needed to convince the Florida State government to grant them their own self-contained governmental powers. And though Walt's city of the future was doomed to never come to pass, the journey of Disney World from idea to becoming a resort city roughly the size of San Francisco and with the same governing powers as the Vatican was wild...and ended with murder? On this episode of Deep Cuts we explore the crazy story of how Disney World became its own government. -- Get the official Deep Cuts shoulder patch! http://bit.ly/deepcuts_patch -- Listen to our new album, a 9 song rock opera about the rise and fall of Napster! https://open.spotify.com/album/63C5uu1tkzZ2FhfsrSSf5s?si=q4WItoNmRUeM159TxKLWew -- Additional incidental music credits: The Deadboy Detectives Dadbeats http://bit.ly/FoodFightPod D.Catalano's music used with permission of Fivese7encollective https://wekeepoddhours.bandcamp.com Learn more about your ad choices. How the WEIRD SATANIST GUY Went Viral w/Andrew Bowser | Case File #56
9072
He appeared on the Internet talking about his love for Satan, and then he became a household name. In the mid-2010s, videos started popping up on social media featuring a strange man dressed in an outfit that looked like it was purchased off the mannequin at a Hot Topic in 2005. He would appear around the country at various events captured on the news, and he always had an incredibly unique, hilarious, perplexing, and often-Satan-themed take on whatever was going on. He soon became a huge viral hit. But it turned out that the Weird Satanist Guy was actually Andrew Bowser, a writer, actor, and filmmaker. So how did he orchestrate this viral event? And what does he have planned for his beloved character, Onyx the Fortuitous now? Captain Marvel's Racist Secret | Case File #55
4717
The creator of Captain Marvel/Shazam! is a singular talent with a dark legacy of racism. In the late 1930s, the legendary comic character, Captain Marvel, who would later become known as Shazam! because of copyright issues, was created by writer Bill Parker and illustrator C.C. Beck. He went on to become more popular than Superman for a long period of time, adapted into multiple movies and tv shows, and just another piece of pop culture history for comic fans. However, the early inception of Captain Marvel is marred with some of the most brutal examples of racism in media you can imagine. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the flawed legacy of C.C. 1918 Pandemic, AKA Spanish Flu | Case File #53
4588
The 1918 global pandemic is almost note-for-note identical to what is happening today. In 1918, a severe case of influenza ravaged the entire planet - killing around 50 Million people worldwide in the span of a few years. The way we handled with it, the misinformation, the denial, the politicization, and everything else surrounding the Spanish Flu was oddly similar to what has happened in the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, and yet we didn't seem to learn anything from it because, for whatever reason, the Spanish Flu just hasn't really been taught in schools or kept in the cultural consciousness. Woman Who Co-Wrote Novels With a Ghost | Case File #52

Pearl Curran wrote several novels in her lifetime, but she claims they were all actually written by a ghost. In the early 1900s, Pearl Curran became famous because she was a published novelist who claimed to have written all of her books by communicating with a spirit through a Ouija board. How Gamestop Bankrupted Wall Street | Case File #51
7151
An exhaustive breakdown of how Reddit bankrupted Wall Street using Gamestop stock. In late January 2020, a bunch of amateur stock traders in the subreddit /r/WallStreetBets decided that they would hatch a plan to drive up the value of stock shares in the ailing video game retailer, Gamestop. They bought up tons of the stock and within a few days the shares went up from $12 to over $400. Because a bunch of hedge funds had been majorly betting against Gamestop's stock improving, this move literally cost them billions and bankrupted a few of them. The Warrens, Ghost Grifters & Secret Pedophiles? | Case File #49

The Conjuring was based on them, they were world famous ghost hunters, but they had two very dark secrets. Throughout the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, all the way up to their deaths in the late 2000s, Ed and Lorraine Warren were world famous for hunting ghosts, spirits, and other supernatural entities. They were a fiercely religious married couple who claimed to be demonologists and mediums. The Amityville Horror was based on one of their cases. They were the owners of the Annabelle doll. They are the characters portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the Conjuring franchise. But they had a huge secret - their entire careers were a total scam. They were grifters. Helen Keller Doesn't Exist? | Case File #48

A movement of millions of teenagers on Tik Tok now believe Helen Keller is a hoax. Why? At some point during this hells cape we called 2020, what started off as possibly a joke turned into a movement of millions of Gen Z kids on Tik Tok who collectively developed an elaborate conspiracy theory about how Helen Keller wasn't a real person. Some people believe she never existed. Some believe she was a scam artist. Some believe she was faking at least one of her disabilities. But either way, it's a testament to the post truth society we now live in where lies get laundered by social algorithms and become fact to millions of people. Rise and Fall of Napster | Case File #46

Napster came out of nowhere, was the biggest thing in the world, and then disappeared just as quickly. What really happened? In the late 90s, the music industry was on the verge of change. Many were concerned about the growing popularity of the Internet, and how digital files could be easily shared from home to home. Could this have some kind of lasting effect on sales of albums somewhere down the line? But all that changed when a new program popped out seemingly out of nowhere: Napster. And it did everything that the music execs feared. It let anybody shared any music for free. Over the next couple of years the program exploded in popularity, but it was steeped in legal trouble almost immediately. And then it was gone. So what really happened in the fascinating tale of the rise and fall of Napster? On this very special season finale of Deep Cuts, we explore that very question...in musical form. He was a masked vigilante who stormed a private club for the wealthy elite in hopes of uncovering a deep state trafficking ring. In the early 2000s, Richard McCaslin had become obsessed with the idea of the Deep State and the New World Order, and the fact that Reptilian overlords were controlling humanity from behind the scenes. Specifically, he had hear from Alex Jones that there was a private club in Northern California called Bohemian Grove where some of the richest, most powerful celebrities, politicians, and public figures secretly held ritual sacrifices of children and trafficked them in perverse sex rings. So he decided to gear up as the masked vigilante superhero, the Phantom Patriot, and raid the club with a machine gun. The Worst Harry Potter Fanfic Ever Written | Case File #43
5135
In 2006, the worst fan fiction ever written was released. We still haven't figured out who actually wrote it. My Immortal is a bizarre, intensely terrible fan fiction published on the internet from 2006 to 2007. It features a Hot Topic-clad, suicidal, goth, My Chemical Romance-loving female vampire protagonist who goes to Hogwarts and has romances as well as conflicts with the cast of Harry Potter - except all goth'd and Hot Topic'd out themselves. It's a truly hypnotically awful piece of writing. But there's also a mystery behind it. Who wrote it? Many have claimed to have written it. One person even got a huge book deal from claiming they wrote it. But, to this day, we still have no idea who wrote the worst fan fiction ever written. Mother Teresa, Saint of Lies and Death | Case File #40
4180
She is the most well-known Saint of the modern era, but her true legacy is full of cruelty, torture, and death. Throughout the 1950s - 1990s, Mother Teresa rose to prominence as one of the most well-known and celebrated humanitarians in history. She ran hundreds of hospitals and clinics to help rehabilitate the poverty and disease-stricken poor out of the kindness of her heart, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and was officially granted Saint status by the Catholic Church. We literally use her name as shorthand for saying someone is kind of generous. However, in reality Mother Teresa had an ulterior motive for the humanitarian work that she did, and her clinics and hospitals were poorly-run, unsanitary death traps meant to trick poor people into getting baptized before they died so that the Catholic Church could claim as many souls as possible. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the true, dark story behind the life and legacy of Mother Teresa. Verhoeven's Toupee, Guide to Neo Fascism | Case File #37
5574
Utopia. Dystopia. These are the two options we thought we had. But there's a third, and we're living in it. Andrew and Dave, your intrepid hosts, have been chipping away at a theory for basically the entire existence of Deep Cuts. It's all about how the year 2020 has revealed that we are living in neither a utopian or dystopian society, but rather a third and more surreal option. A concept that we've coined to describe the world we're currently live in where satire isn't any more absurd than what's happening in real life, and you're scared to go outside of your house but you can have KFC delivered to your door at the touch of a button. The day after the 2020 presidential election is as good a time as any to dive into our theory. On today's Deep Cuts we do something a little different and explore the terrifyingly bizarre concept of...The Verhoeven's Toupee. The Man With a Penis on His Arm | Case File #35
3984
One day his penis just fell off. But doctors had an experimental new way to grow it back... 4 years ago, Malcolm MacDonald developed a rare blood infection. His outer extremities turned black - including his penis. However, unlike the rest of his limbs, one day Malcolm got out of bed and his penis fell off on the floor. He went through a period of shame, depression, and low confidence. That was until some doctors came to him with an experimental idea for how to restore his manhood. And it involved...growing it on his arm? On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the real-life trans-humanist body horror of Malcolm MacDonald - AKA Dickarm. Flat Earth Pt. 2 w/ Mark Sargent | Case File #34
6747
A weird, somewhat disturbing interview with the leader of the Flat Earth Movement, Mark Sargent. A few years ago, an idea started catching on that was exclusively perpetuated by social media algorithms on platforms like YouTube and Facebook. The idea was not a new one - in fact it was 100s of years old. It was the idea that our world is, in fact, not round but flat. More specifically, it's a flat disk covered by an impenetrable dome that was built by some kind of ancient celestial being that is keeping us encased in our dome prison. Throughout the years, this belief has gained a surprising amount of popularity. So what? It's just some looney conspiracy theory. However, in the age of social media, when fringe lunacy can create movements with real-world consequences, and we're pushed further and further away from a collectively agreed-upon objective truth, this movement is much more insidious than you might assume. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we follow up our deep dive on the Flat Earth Movement with a 2-hour interview with one of the leaders of the movement, Mark Sargent, so we could ask him about why he believes what he believes and how he thinks this movement was able to spread so fast in the age of social media. 01010111 01010100 01000110 00111111  Learn more about your ad choices. Act of Killing, Genocide Community Theater | Case File #32
8872
One filmmaker got men who committed a genocide to play themselves in a movie about the genocide. In the mid-60s, a fascist regime in Indonesia enlisted several paramilitary militias and two-bit gangsters to murder millions of innocent people labeled as communists. The event was re-written in their history books as heroic, and all the men responsible for the genocide are still in charge and walking free. Nobody knew the truth about what really happened until documentary filmmaker, Joshua Oppenheimer, decided to make a documentary about it. But instead of interviewing victims, he interviewed the actual murderers responsible, and he discovered they were more than willing to share the explicit details of their war crimes. They'd even...dress up in costumes and re-enact the murders in a movie about the genocide where they play themselves. And thus, The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, twin documentaries, were made and changed the country of Indonesia forever. Lisa Frank, Abusive Drug Den | Case File #31
4722
Lisa Frank and her husband used all that money to throw cocaine parties and abuse their employees. All throughout the 90s, Lisa Frank products were the huge back to school craze of the decade. Girls everywhere wore their brightly-colored backpacks, stored paper in their vibrantly-rendered folders, and wrote their homework onto kitty-and-puppy-adorned notebooks with dolphin-and-tiger-emblazoned pencils. They couldn't get enough of Lisa Frank. However, behind the scenes in an office building in Tucson, Arizona, something much darker was going on at Lisa Frank headquarters. Employees report being screamed at, having chairs thrown at them, being locked in rooms for being late, and even picking up bags of cocaine and porn for their bosses. Lisa Frank and her husband, James Green, created a culture of fear, abuse, screaming, fighting, and had drug-fueled benders behind closed-doors. These are the claims made by multiple former Lisa Frank employees. Are they true? And who exactly is the enigmatic Lisa Frank? On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the warped, rainbow colored world of Lisa Frank. Chris Hansen, Exploitative Conman Pt. 3 | Case File #30
7813
He used to be a hero, but now he exploits the abuse of children for views and money. In the 80s and 90s, he was a hard-hitting journalist, tackling some incredibly important stories that shed light on issues like slave labor, the crack cocaine epidemic, and child trafficking. In the early 2000s he was host of the insanely popular TV show, To Catch a Predator. For a while, Chris Hansen was a legitimate celebrity, probably the most famous of any reporter, and beloved by all as a literal hero doing a great public service. However, somewhere along the way he lost sight of the altruistic nature of what he was doing, and now he spends his days shamelessly exploiting underage abuse victims for YouTube views and a quick buck. In part 3 of Deep Cuts' exploration of Hansen, we look at the increasingly unfortunate YouTube career of Hansen, his dealings with pyramid schemes and scams, and ultimately reflect on his larger role in the damage caused to several of the victims he purported to help. Did Bella Thorne Break Online Sex Work? | Case File #27
7166
A single photo this former Disney Star posted on porn app, OnlyFans, might have destroyed an industry. When former Disney Channel star, Bella Thorne, decided to break the Internet with a bold new experiment in which she would join the massively popular paid content service OnlyFans - largely used by online adult stars and sex workers - and then make a movie about it, what eventually was supposed to be her attempt at shedding light on the industry and de-stigmatizing it, actually led to a situation where she singlehandedly destabilized an entire industry with a single photo. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the day that Bella Thorne joined OnlyFans. George Zimmerman, Murder Profiteer | Case File #26
6790
For years he's been profiting off of the trauma of a teenage boy's murder. In 2012, George Zimmerman saw 17-year-old Trayvon Martin walking through his semi-gated community and became suspicious. The teenager had decided to walk to a nearby convenience store for a snack, but Zimmerman felt like something was just not right. He pursued the boy, and eventually got into an altercation with him that ended with the death of Martin. A lengthy court case ensued, and Zimmerman was eventually acquitted on all murder charges. However, in the years since, Zimmerman has made a living profiting off of sick and twisted schemes meant to capitalize off of the death of Trayvon. On this decidedly more sober episode of Deep Cuts, we take a look at the horrifying legacy of George Zimmerman. Speed Racer Secretly Changed Cinema | Case File #25
4976
It was a financial and critical flop, but it secretly changed the way movies are made. In 2008, the Wachowskis released a weird, experimental live action adaptation of the 1960s anime classic, Speed Racer. The movie starred Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, and Susan Sarandon, and was not well-received by critics, audiences, and totally flopped at the box office. It has a small continent of fans (including us of course), but ultimately became a forgotten footnote - lost to time. However, a reassessment of the film reveals how it completely changed the way we tell cinematic stories now, and may have been the most influential film of the last 20 years. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the influential legacy of The Wachowski's Speed Racer. Who ACTUALLY Created Spider-Man? | Case File #24
5716
Did Stan Lee & Steve Ditko create Spider-Man? Or was the idea stolen from a Halloween costume? In the Silver Age of comics in the 1960s and 70s, things were an existential mess from a creator perspective - especially at Marvel comics. There were no artist or writer unions, characters were often created in bull pen-type situations where authorship was given to the company at large instead of the actual people doing the creating. And, in a system where creator-ship was not properly recorded, and artists were unfairly disregarded, many of the people involved in the creation of the books all have their own versions of the story. One of the most notorious examples is Spider-Man. Stan Lee claims he created the iconic wall-crawler because he thought of the name and the superpower. Steve Ditko claims he's actually a co-creator because he designed the web-slinger, drew most of the original books, and basically wrote them as well. But what if Spider-Man existed BEFORE either men created him? What if the idea was stolen from a Halloween costumed created by a different legendary comic book artist a decade prior? On this episode of Deep Cuts we explore the story, the speculation, and the enigma behind the true creator of Spider-Man. Laz Rojas, One Man Movie Studio | Case File #23
8656
He made a 4 hour movie where he played over 100 characters by himself, but he ended up homeless. In 1994, Laz Rojas desperately wanted to break into the entertainment industry as an actor, writer, and director. He had written literally hundreds of scripts, but couldn't get anybody to pay attention to them. So he shot a 4 hour film that was a collection of random scenes from all of the various scripts he had written. The only thing is - he didn't have any friends or collaborators to make it with. So he played every single character - over 100 - in the film, sometimes playing up to 5 characters in a scene interacting with himself. His career never took off despite this Herculean effort, and years later he ended up homeless and destitute in the streets of LA. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the inspiring, exciting, and terribly sad life of Laz Rojas. The Greatest Hoax in Hip Hop | Case File #22
6975
Two Scottish guys fooled the world into thinking they were American rappers for almost a decade. In the early 2000s, Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain were college students and best friends. They also loved hip hop and wanted to do something more with their lives than live a small-town Scottish existence. They formed a rap group and got good. However, after various auditions they quickly learned that, no matter how good they were, nobody would ever take two Scottish rappers seriously. So...they fabricated an entire elaborate fake backstory that they were Americans from California and...people believed them. And they also started giving them opportunities. So Billy and Gavin - or Silibil N Brains - moved to London and lived their lives as Americans for several years...and they almost became massive celebrities in the process. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the wild multi-year hoax of Silibil N Brains. Aum Shinrikyo, Anime Death Cult | Case File #21
5851
A cult started by a blind Japanese man went on to become a deadly terrorist organization. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Shoko Asahara was rising in the ranks as one of the most powerful cult leaders in history. He had over ten thousand followers, and slowly over the course of several years would launch several deadly terrorist attacks against the country of Japan - a few of which are the worst attack that Japan has ever experienced. They did all of this while producing anime recruitment videos animated by actual anime artists who had joined the cult. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the dark and dangerous world of Shoko Asahara and the Aum Shinrikyo cult. Is Britney Spears A Prisoner? | Case File #20
10702
12 years ago she lost control of her life. Is it for mental health reasons, or something far more evil? In 2008, after a very public mental health scare in which pop star Britney Spears shaved her head and had several violent outbursts, her father, Jamie Spears, was granted a permanent conservatorship over her. Conservatorships are usually reserved for the mentally unwell or handicapped, or the old and infirm, and make it so you are not legally allowed to make your own decisions, vote, drive a car, get married, or many other basic elements of human life. Now, a growing movement of concerned fans believe that she's being held against her will and is trying to cry for help through coded messages on her social media pages. Are they right? Is Britney being controlled by her father and a team exploiting her talents for money? Or is she suffering from private mental health issues and being placed under this legal psychiatric hold for her own good? On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore and attempt to make sense of #FreeBritney and the Britney Spears conservatorship. The Shaggs, Imprisoned Girl Group | Case File #19
10346
They were three young girls held prisoner by their father and forced to become a rock band because of a prophecy. They ended up becoming a huge cult hit, beloved by many - including Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain who lists their album as his third favorite of all time - and one of the most influential indie bands of all time. They were musical geniuses in the category of "outsider music." They also hated playing music, never wanted to be a band, and were held prisoner as teenagers by their father for 11 years and forced to practice 8 hours a day, 7 days a week in pursuit of a prophecy he believed in that they would one day become the world's biggest music group. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the strange, sad, and fascinating life of The Shaggs - the genius rock band who just wanted to be regular teenagers. Jared Leto, Cult Leader? | Case File #18
10327
Actor Jared Leto has slowly been growing a cult-like following for the last several years. What's his endgame? You know him from his films throughout the 90s, 2000s, leading up to today, as well as from his band 30 Seconds to Mars. Did you also know that, for the last several years, he's invited thousands of people to a large gathering that happens on a remote Island in some exotic area of the world? They started out as basically music festivals, but slowly they have morphed into something different. Leto dresses in flowing white robes and speaks to crowds of thousands, preaching nebulous philosophies about life and the universe. They've become less and less about music and more like...a literal cult? On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore Jared Leto's Mars Island events and get to the bottom of whether or not he's trying to become a cult leader. 01000011 01101000 01100001 01110010 01101100 01100101 01110011 00100000 01010111 01100101 01111000 01101100 01100101 01110010 00100000 01010111 01100101 01101100 01101100 01100101 01110010 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01101111 01101110 01100101 00100000 01110111 01101000 01101111 00100000 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110011 01100101 01100101 01101011 01110011 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01100101 01110010 01100001 01110011 01100101 00100000 01100110 01110010 01101111 01101101 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01110100 01101001 01101101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100101 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Matthew Nolan, the Third Brother | Case File #17
3896
He's the brother that director Christopher Nolan doesn't want to talk about. Because he's a murderer. You are familiar with the massively successful British filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, who has directed films like the Dark Knight, Inception, the Prestige, and the Tenet. You might also be familiar with his brother, Jonah Nolan, who co-created HBO's Westworld. But did you know that there's a third Nolan brother? Why have you never heard of him? Well, likely somebody paid a lot of money to make sure you didn't. In 2009, Matthew Nolan, the eldest Nolan brother, was hired by a wealthy businessman to get some missing money back from one of his ex-partners. Nolan, along with an accomplice, kidnapped, tortured, and murdered the man, but he's never faced trial or gone to prison for it because of the bureaucratic nightmare of extradition laws. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we talk about Matthew Nolan, the third Nolan brother with a dark past. 01000100 01101001 01100100 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01101100 01101001 01110011 01110100 01100101 01101110 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01000101 01001110 01010100 01001001 01010010 01000101 00100000 01000001 01101110 01100100 01110010 01100101 01110111 00100000 01010111 00101110 01001011 00101110 00100000 01100101 01110000 01101001 01110011 01101111 01100100 01100101 00100000 01100110 01110010 01101111 01101101 00100000 01110011 01110100 01100001 01110010 01110100 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01100110 01101001 01101110 01101001 01110011 01101000 00111111  Learn more about your ad choices. Andrew W.K., Fictional Character | Case File #16
14851
He was a one-hit wonder rocker who loved to party, but nobody noticed he was a complete hoax. In the late 90s/early 2000s, Andrew W.K. exploded out of nowhere with the anthemic, epic party anthem "Party Hard" complete with a stylish music video depicting him thrashing onstage in front of a giant mural of his bloodied face. After that, he became a novelty fringe element of pop culture - occasionally popping up to sing about or talk about partying. Ultimately we all kind of forgot about him. However, what nobody who wasn't paying close attention realized was that - all along - there was something deeper going on with Andrew W.K. Ultimately a conspiracy theory about him bubbled to the surface - that he was actually a fictional character played by several different actors. Is that true? Or is the truth even stranger? On the final episode of our three-part "Kayfabe Trilogy", we explore the 20-year-long performance art stunt that is Andrew W.K. Phoenix Jones, Living Superhero | Case File #15
6607
He was a real life costumed hero dedicated to stopping crime, but in the end his story was a supervillain origin. Phoenix Jones was a real life costumed superhero that operated out of Seattle, Washington for several years. Every night, seven days a week, he patrolled the streets of Seattle at night with his crew of fellow costumed heroes and a camera person. Anywhere he could find crime being committed - robbery, theft, drug deals, assaults - he would put himself in harm's way, chase and apprehend criminals, and aid the police in arrests. Many called his methods into question, but eventually he won over the hearts of Seattle and, for a brief time, the country. However, there was a darker story going on behind the scenes of Jones' Captain America shtick, and it was only a matter of time before it would all come crashing down. On part two of our Kayfabe Trilogy, we examine real life costumed superhero, Phoenix Jones. Jay J Armes, Spy With No Hands | Case File #14
6605
He was the world's greatest private eye who was also a double amputee. He also lied about his entire life. In part 1 of our three-part "Kayfabe Trilogy", we explore the crazy life and astonishing lies of Jay J Armes - a man from El Paso, Texas who lost both of his hands in a horrible accident as a child, and went on to become a globe-trotting private detective responsible for solving thousands of crimes - including rescuing Marlon Brando's son from kidnappers - starring in television and film, and even having a line of toys created in his image. For a while, the world was transfixed by the "Spy With No Hands," as he regaled us with his countless too-good-to-be-true war stories. The only problem was...it WAS too good to be true. Paul Lynde, the Center Square | Case File #13
3149
He was a beloved comedian and linchpin of Hollywood Squares, but he was also a tortured soul with a tragic life. In the 70s, Paul Lynde enjoyed success as one of the most popular comedians of the time - notably with his role as Uncle Arthur on 'Bewitched' and as the center square on Hollywood Squares. However, what many of the time didn't know is that Lynde was dealing with deeply-routed demons from childhood trauma that resulted in massive drug and alcohol addiction. And, eventually, his hedonistic lifestyle got him into hot water when he was involved with a tragic death. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we discuss the tragic life, career, and death of Paul Lynde. 01001001 01110100 00100111 01110011 00100000 01100001 01101100 01101101 01101111 01110011 01110100 00100000 01110100 01101001 01101101 01100101 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01110000 01100001 01110010 01110100 01111001 00100000 01101000 01100001 01110010 01100100 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Tony Wong, Comics Mobster | Case File #12
5488
He was the Stan Lee of Hong Kong comics, but his practices eventually landed him in prison. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Tony Wong produced hundreds of Hong Kong comics, or Manhua, based on his long-running franchise Little Rascals/Oriental Heroes. Despite the fact that it was an open secret that he was largely lying about how involved he was with the creation of his own comics - most of them clearly being drawn and written by ghost artists and Wong merely taking credit for them - he became the biggest name in Manhua, controlling nearly 90% of the entire market for years. In the 90s, he attempted to cross over to the US market to less success.. and eventually prison time. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we delve into the troubled and mysterious life and career of the Stan Lee of Hong Kong - Tony Wong! 01010010 01100101 01110100 01110101 01110010 01101110 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01001101 01111001 01110011 01110100 01100101 01110010 01111001 00100000 01010100 01110010 01100101 01100101 01101000 01101111 01110101 01110011 01100101 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Theft of the Mona Lisa | Case File #11
4574
The Mona Lisa was once a very ordinary painting, but one man made it the most famous one in the world. In 1911, a man with an inside connection stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre by simply walking in and taking it. At the time, the Mona Lisa was regarded as a fairly insignificant minor work by the legendary artist, Leonardo DaVinci. However, all of that would change with the ensuing investigation, and the global attention that the theft would receive. After that, the Mona Lisa became the most famous painting of all time. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore how a painting can go from minor work to celebrated masterpiece based on the actions of one art framer. 01010100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01001101 01111001 01110011 01110100 01100101 01110010 01111001 00100000 01010100 01110010 01100101 01100101 01101000 01101111 01110101 01110011 01100101 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. The Sentry | Case File #10
4784
A comic writer discovered the first superhero Stan Lee ever created. It was the greatest hoax in comics history. In 1999 it was discovered that Stan Lee had created a superhero character BEFORE the Fantastic Four - long-believed to be the first superhero comics characters he'd ever been a part of. His name was the Sentry, and he was co-created by an artist named Artie Rosen back in 1961 and then promptly forgotten by Lee, never to be published. Then, in the late 90s, comic book writer Paul Jenkins discovered some designs for the character in an old box and decided to team up with artist Jae Lee to create a reboot of the never-before-seen character. Was any of this true? Or was it one of the craziest, greatest promotional stunts in comics history? On this episode of Deep Cuts we examine...The Sentry! 01010011 01110100 01101001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01101011 01101001 01101110 01100100 00100000 01101111 01100110 00100000 01110010 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101111 01110110 01100101 01110010 00100000 01001101 01100001 01110100 01110100 00100000 01000110 01110010 01100001 01100011 01110100 01101001 01101111 01101110 00101100 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01100010 01100101 00100000 01101000 01101111 01101110 01100101 01110011 01110100 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Bond Scandals with Matt Fraction | Case File #9
7667
These are the bizarre, inspiring, and sad stories of the scandals that rocked the James Bond franchise. George Lazenby was the second man to play James Bond after Sean Connery left. However, he had never acted before and tricked producers into casting him. Kevin McClory was a producer who managed to somehow win the rights to make his own bootleg James Bond movies in court. Both men left lasting marks on the franchise, but both men also spent the rest of their lives trying to recover from the catastrophic effects 007 had on their careers. 01001111 01101000 00101100 00100000 01110011 01101000 01101001 01110100 00100001 00100000 01001101 01100001 01110100 01110100 00100000 01000110 01110010 01100001 01100011 01110100 01101001 01101111 01101110 00100001 00111111  Learn more about your ad choices. Lonnie Johnson invented your childhood, but big business tried to steal all his money. Lonnie Johnson is an American inventor and engineer, and in the early 90s he invented and patented some of the most important aspects of any 90s kids' childhood. We would have had a lot of boring summer days without his contributions. However, after selling his inventions to big toy companies, he started noticing over the years that they were doing everything in their power to not pay Johnson his cut of the profits. So what did he do? Engage in a decades-long legal battle to get the money that was rightfully his. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the life, inventions, and struggles of Lonnie Johnson - every kid's favorite inventor that they've never heard of. 01001001 00100000 01100011 01100001 01101110 00100000 01100001 01100011 01100011 01100101 01110011 01110011 00100000 00110101 01000111 00100000 01100110 01110010 01100101 01110001 01110101 01100101 01101110 01100011 01101001 01100101 01110011 00100000 01100110 01110010 01101111 01101101 00100000 01101001 01101110 00100000 01101000 01100101 01110010 01100101 00101110 00100000 01000100 01100101 01100110 01101001 01101110 01101001 01110100 01100101 01101100 01111001 00100000 01101110 01101111 01110100 00100000 01101101 01100001 01101011 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101101 01100101 00100000 01110011 01101001 01100011 01101011 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. The Evil Within | Case File #7
5674
Andrew Getty spent 15 years making a horror movie, and it ended up killing him. Grandson of oil tycoon, J. Paul Getty, and cousin of John Paul Getty III, who was famously kidnapped and tortured as a 16-year-old boy in 1973, Andrew Getty became haunted by night terrors that were so vivid and horrifying that he decided the only way he could get rid of them was to channel all of his fear into a self-financed horror movie. Beginning in 2002, he spent the next 15 years, and 6 million dollars, meticulously executing his traumatic vision. Ultimately, he would succumb to obsession and tragically die while locked away in his Hollywood mansion editing the film. This is the story of Andrew Getty's descent into obsession, and the bizarre but mezmerizing movie that he made in the process that has gone largely unnoticed by the public. 01001001 01110011 00100000 01100001 01101110 01111001 01100010 01101111 01100100 01111001 00100000 01101111 01110101 01110100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 01110010 01100101 00111111  Learn more about your ad choices. Cynthia Rothrock, Girl With Guns | Case File #6
5078
She was the greatest action star of the 80s you've never heard of. Her career should have been bigger. Cynthia Rothrock was a World Champion martial artist that transitioned into Hong Kong action films in the 80s despite being an American from Scranton, Pennsylvania. She went on to be in some of the most underrated action films of all time. Every heard of the 1985 film, "Yes, Madam!"? Well, it launched an entire genre of movies, the "Girls With Guns" genre, and she was co-lead alongside Michelle Yeoh - one of the biggest movie stars in the entire world. So why did Yeoh go on to such massive success while Rothrock fell into the background of straight-to-VHS? The story is fascinating. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we explore the history of one of the greatest action stars that never was. 01010011 01101111 01101101 01100101 00100000 01100100 01100001 01111001 00100000 01110011 01101111 01101101 01100101 01100010 01101111 01100100 01111001 00100000 01110111 01101001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01110011 01110100 01100001 01110010 01110100 00100000 01100100 01100101 01100011 01101111 01100100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 01110011 01100101 00100000 01101101 01100101 01110011 01110011 01100001 01100111 01100101 01110011 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Message From Space | Case File #5
3619
The most expensive film in Japanese History was an insane bootlegged Star Wars ripoff. In 1978, at the height of the global 'Star Wars' craze following the release of the first movie in George Lucas's legendary franchise, tons of knockoff Star Wars movies were produced to try and capitalize off of the space craze. However, there was only one of those movies that was notable for A: being directed by the same guy who directed 'Battle Royale,' B: Having all of its sets and costumed designed by the guy who created Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, C: being the most expensive Japanese live action film produced at the time, and D: being completely insane. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we discuss the history of the making of 'Message From Space,' and break down the pure Japanese insanity of the film. 01010100 01101000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01010010 01010011 01010011 00100000 01100110 01100101 01100101 01100100 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 00100000 01110000 01110010 01101001 01110011 01101111 01101110 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Hergé, Nazi Collaborator | Case File #4
6362
The creator of 'The Adventures of Tintin', Hergé, willingly worked for Nazis for years. He's one of the most beloved comic artists in history, deservedly so, but many fans don't want to discuss this dark aspect of his career. For years he produced his long-running comic, 'The Adventures of Tintin,' for Nazi-run magazines in German-occupied Belgium and even collaborated closely with Nazi-sympathizers. Was he himself a Nazi sympathizer, or just struggling to survive in the tumultuous world of comics, made twice-difficult by being thrown into the stage of the Third Reich's European land-grab? And should this fact be acknowledged as a troublesome part of his legacy? On this episode of Deep Cuts, we dive into the history of Hergé's career and the creation of one of the most beloved comic book characters ever made. 01001000 01101001 01101100 01101100 01110011 01101101 01100101 01110010 00100000 01101001 01110011 00100000 01100001 01101110 00100000 01101001 01101101 01110000 01101111 01110011 01110100 01100101 01110010 00101110  Learn more about your ad choices. Tom Hanson, Zodiac Killer Hunter | Case File #3
4983
He made a movie about the Zodiac Killer to catch the real Zodiac Killer. It almost worked. In 1973, Tom Hanson wrote and directed the world's first movie about the Zodiac Killer - an infamous serial killer that terrorized Northern California for months, killing multiple victims. The movie was released mere months after the grisly killings. It was one of the most flagrant examples of exploitation cinema, but was there another motive for making the movie besides just shamelessly capitalizing off of a tragedy? In fact, Tom Hanson had made the movie as part of an elaborate plot to catch the real life killer. He planned to have a red carpet premiere for the movie in downtown San Francisco, lure the killer there, trick him into confessing his crimes, and perform a citizen's arrest on him. Sound far fetched and insane? Well, it was. But the craziest thing was - it nearly worked. On this episode of Deep Cuts, we delve into the unbelievable story of Tom Hanson, and his outlandish plot to catch the Zodiac Killer at a movie theater screening. 01000100 01101111 01101110 00100111 01110100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01110100 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 01101101 00100000 01100110 01101111 01101111 01101100 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00101110 Learn more about your ad choices. The Mother of the Matrix | Case File #2
4581
She claimed Hollywood stole 'The Matrix' and 'The Terminator' from her. Many still believe her. Sophia Stewart says that she wrote a book in the 80s that was the basis for both smash-hit movie franchises, 'The Matrix,' and 'The Terminator,' and that her ideas were unceremoniously stolen by The Wachowskis (directors of 'The Matrix) and James Cameron (director of 'The Terminator'). She also claims that she sued Warner Brothers over copyright theft and won $1 Billion dollars, but that the WB has paid to keep it out of the media for decades. Is there any basis to these claims? Or is this one of the biggest con jobs in pop culture history?
