Beautiful Skin from within with The Beauty Chef
52:51

Carla Oates created The Beauty Chef in 2009 after healing her family’s skin issues and discovering that beautiful, glowing skin begins with a healthy gut. After 10 years of working as a fashion stylist, Carla became a beauty writer, during which time she quickly realized the products she was writing about were full of synthetic substances and toxins. So, she began writing about healthier, natural alternatives made from plants and organic foods, which eventually lead to her first book, Feeding Your Skin. Years later, when her daughter began to experience eczema and allergies, she put her family on a gut-healing protocol that included probiotic-rich, lacto-fermented wholefoods. The difference in her daughter’s allergies was incredible, and her whole family quickly experienced improved wellbeing along with vibrant, glowing skin. She began experimenting with lacto-fermenting skin-loving superfoods in her Bondi kitchen and that’s how GLOW—The Beauty Chef’s first inner beauty powder—was created. The pioneer of the inner beauty category, The Beauty Chef now has a large range of bio-fermented, probiotic-rich wholefood supplements and topical skincare products, as well as two cookbooks – all of which I absolutely die for.  We talk about the gut skin and brain connection, and how she now works on her unique formulas with a team of leading microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists, employing cutting-edge research to develop products that support gut health and glowing skin. We also have a special guest this week, my momma, so stay tuned to the end of the episode, where we answer your relationship questions.  And don’t forget to check out @thebeautychef on Instagram.

Creating an opportunity for civil discourse with The Flip Side
44:32

In July 2016, Annafi Wahed left her corporate job in NYC to campaign for Democratic party candidates in New Hampshire. Walking door to door, she saw firsthand how even next-door neighbors could be completely isolated from one another by the news they consume. In the months following the election, as talk of "fake news" and filter bubbles became commonplace, Annafi set out to create a shared news source in a world of a billion news feeds. Fast forward, The Flip Side was born, a free website, Instagram and daily email subscription service that provides your daily digest of the best op-eds and analyses from liberal and conservative media. Everyday, you wake up, open your email, and there is a fact checked, detail oriented breakdown of current events as viewed by the left, and the right. It’s brilliant. Annafi’s op-eds have been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Hill, and USA Today. Her public appearances include everything from Fox & Friends and The Young Turks to academic panels and podcasts. This is truly one of the most wonderful political conversations I’ve had in a long time. Annafi is painfully intelligent, wildly informed and extremely graceful. Here’s to hoping this inspires more dialogue and civil discourse without trying to kill each. Check out her newsletter, The Flip Side, here.

A history lesson on pandemics, climate change, the need for grace and change.
48:28

Sarah Yeomans is an archaeologist specializing in the Imperial period of the Roman Empire with a particular emphasis on ancient science and religion. Currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Southern California, she also consults on educational programming at the Biblical Archaeology Society in Washington D.C. and is adjunct faculty at both St. Mary’s College of Maryland and West Virginia University. A native Californian, Sarah holds a M.A. in Archaeology from the University of Sheffield, England and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Southern California. She has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Israel, Italy, Turkey, France and England and has worked on several television and film productions, most recently as an interviewed expert on “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman.” She is a Provost Fellow at the University of Southern California, and is the recipient of a Research Fellowship from the American Research Institute of Turkey (ARIT) as well as a Mayers Fellowship at the Huntington Library and Museum in Los Angeles. Her current research involves ancient Roman medical technology and cult, as well as the impact of pandemic events on Roman society. She is generally happiest when covered in dirt, roaming archaeological sites somewhere in the Mediterranean region. I couldn’t imagine a better human to discuss our current pandemic with, considering she knows every detail about every pandemic in human history. We talk about the similarities of pandemics within the context of society, government and agriculture and how our current pandemic is much different than those of past (and by the way, conspiracy theorists have been around since the dawn of time). I learned a great deal about the role of climate change and other critical environmental factors, how pandemics are inevitable, the role of fear and how people’s reactions often create more damage and that it’s ok to feel scared, depressed and listless. We also touched on what’s living in the permafrost and how incredibly vital it is we stop our planet from warming. The beautiful thing is that be also discussed what happens next; how our knowledge of the past will propel us gracefully into the future and that we have a brilliant opportunity to see what our society is lacking and demand change. The common denominator is always the same, don’t be an ass hole, lead with grace, and VOTE! especially in local elections.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE & WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW WITH DR. LEKKOS
57:57

Dr. Lekkos is a functional medicine doctor and the founder of Bios Functional Medicine in Santa Monica. He earned his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, has a master’s degree in metabolic and nutritional medicine from the University of South Florida Medical College, and is board-certified in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. Unlike most doctors, Lekkos looks at you as a whole person. I was told by multiple people this man solves the unsolvable and man were they right. In our first session we just talked for two hours, just like, about who I am – which I don’t know about you, have never happened to me in a doctor’s office. Rather than bandaging symptoms, he looks at you as whole person, and address true underlying causes. His goal is to make you feel better now, while preventing disease so you can literally live your best life.  He also offers really cool regenerative services using adult stem cells to activate the body's built-in mechanism of self-repair and restore function to once declining health - essentially, he’s a master bio-hacker. Listen, I understand a service like this comes with privilege, so until our healthcare system makes much needed changes, I did my best to you all answers you need, including what most people should be eating, the importance of sleep hygiene, what supplements most people should be taking, why we need to cut out chemicals and most importantly, how effects of mental health on your body. This conversation was important to me, so we decided to skip out on our relationship Q&A this week. Enjoy!

From homelessness to the Forbes list with “alive ideas” with Suzy Batiz
01:15:44

We often hear inspirational stories, but Suzy Batiz, the founder and CEO of Poo~Pourri and Supernatural, really takes the damn cake. Although she recently tied the Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women with Reece Witherspoon, Suzy’s journey to success was a god damn battle. Suzy grew up in poverty, surviving childhood sexual and domestic abuse, two bankruptcies, three divorces and severe depression. She sold exercise equipment, opened a clothing store, a tanning salon, a beauty salon, sold lingerie, bought homes, sold homes and at certain points, became homeless. She was so focused on money solving her problems that she lost herself. Her “AH HA” moment came after reading Byron Katie’s Loving What Is, at which point she dropped everything and attended her 10-day seminar. Five years later, after filing for bankruptcy for a second time at 38, Suzy sold her first bottle of Poo~Pourri. I have been buzzing since we had this conversation and I am so lucky to share this story with you. Stick around and learn about my new favorite term, an “alive idea”, and stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear Davide and I answer your relationship questions.

For those who don’t know, Heather McMahan is an actress, podcast host and comedian, sparking all the joy for all her followers on Instagram. In today’s podcast, it was important to me to really share her journey, so we talk about the odd jobs that paid her rent, including working at a sports bar and soul cycle, how Insta-stories help propel her career, and we bond over the shared loss of our fathers, and importance of family. Legendary Chef Evan Funke and How Shaping Pasta Shaped His Life
01:13:28

Evan Funke is a legend. He is a man fixated on perfection. A two time James Beard nominated chef with arguably one of the best Italian restaurants in the U.S., Felix Trattoria.  With over two decades of culinary experience, including working for Wolfgang puck and a quick stint as a teacher, Evan took a job he despised working under a chef from Bologna, who refused to teach him about his Italian cooking. So, he quit, bought a plane ticket, and moved to the Italian City for three months, learning from the iconic Maestra Alessandra how to make pasta. And so began the obsession – the shapes, the culture, the history….it came his life’s work. We talk about what it was like to opening his dream restaurant, and how hard it was to close it after realizing his partner was a con-man and how to rise from the darkness and get back up again. I am beyond honored to have him on the podcast – this story is one of resilience, dedication and faith.
