Changing the Face of Beauty, Literally, with Deepica Mutyala
43:34

Deepica is a vibrant, charming, inspiring woman to say the least. She’s a South-Asian beauty entrepreneur, who’s career took off after a video went viral of her using red lipstick to cover dark circles under her eyes - a trick specific to her skin tone, which instantly resonated with millions of people.  Growing up in Texas, she was a far cry from her blonde-haired, blue-eyed peers, and spent years dying her hair and wearing contacts. So of course, it became Deepica’s dream to see women who look like her represented in the beauty industry. She became a beauty blogger while going to school and working, and started Live Tinted as a diverse online community, which, after a year, became clean, vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand. This was such a fun conversation, I just absolutely fell in love with her and cannot wait to see what her future holds. Very excited about this episode, please enjoy.

Sibo Truly Made Simple with Phoebe Lapine
53:56

Phoebe Lapine is an author and chef specializing in gluten free and Sibo friendly recipes, as well as a Hasimotos advocate. As someone who felt like shit most my life, I thought having Phoebe tell her story was a great way for you to perhaps get inspired to make some small changes if you’re not feeling your best. She has two books, and her second, Sibo Made Simple, has so many recipes I ABSOLUTELY LOVE that are flavorful, satisfying and don’t leave you feeling bloated or tired. We discuss her journey with Sibo, various tales from both of our journeys to feeling better and much more.

The Founder of Overheard LA, Jesse Margolis
49:17

Jesse is the very hilarious founder of all the “Overheard” Instagram accounts, you know, Overheard LA, Overheard New York, Overheard Bumble, so on and so forth. Like many of us, his path was unconventional and his success came after some failures. I really love what Jesse does because he really has taken an internet road less traveled. Most satirical accounts get as big as possible, start running huge ad’s quickly and often, and while still hilarious, lose a bit of heart. The Overheard accounts, however, are extremely thoughtful, maintain decorum, and have very smart, strategic partnerships. You can tell there is a lot of thought, a lot of hard work and a great deal of consideration in the direction of the brand. It’s truly for the love of a comedy. We discuss this in depth, as well as what the deeper meaning might actually be to all cleanses, shamans and supplement quotes we get so much joy out of seeing on our phones everyday. Enjoy!

The Scientific Reason You Need More Orgasms with Alisa Vitti
53:13

Alisa Vitti is my go to for most things having to do with my body, including getting pregnant. Considering she knows more about the female form than most, I thought we’d have her back and discuss something a bit more fun, like orgasms. In this episode, we discuss the four stages of female arousal, why it’s so incredibly important not to rush your orgasm and the incredible health benefits. Most importantly, we discuss the average person’s warped perception of what sex actually is and guess what? You probably have it wrong. This conversation lifted so many insecurities for me, and once again, made me realize that the information I’ve been fed most my life had been just completely wrong. Enjoy my darlings.

Calling Out the Uncomfortable with Dom Roberts
53:04

If you have Instagram, you have seen one of Dom Roberts images. In the wake of George Floyd, Dom’s very clear, very poignant text-based graphics were shared across social media by the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Sophia Bush and probably half the people you follow. Messages such as "Stop ignoring violent acts of racism. Better yet, do something to stop them” have gone viral, making the 22-year-old one of the most impactful activists on the platform. She did not major is graphic design, this was not her plan, it all just happened. This sweet darling angel girl lives in Arizona with her parents, and I thought it would be interesting to pick her brain, congratulate her, and remind all of you that there are endless opportunities to be the change you want to see in the world.

Finding You Own Path and Falling in Love with Erin Foster
50:57

Erin Foster is one of my favorite follows. She is unabashedly herself and makes me actually laugh out loud. But like most humans I follow, I really didn’t know what her childhood was like, how she found the confidence to really be herself and of course, I had so many questions for the notorious single girl about finding her hubby. We discuss the importance of truly finding yourself, how the mistakes we make in our 20’s make us perfect in our 30’s, her career path and her relationship with Simon. This is a glorious episode you don't want to miss.

Facing Fear, Loving Yourself and the Importance of Change with Monica Berg
36:44

Monica Berg is an inspiration to say the least. She’s a wife, mother of four, speaker, author, counselor and teacher. During a battle with anorexia at a young age, Monica realized the power and change and taking control. What really struck me about our conversation was her extremely clear sense of self. You can tell she’s done the “work” and that it has in fact, worked. So we talk about what the work looks like; what is was dealing with the diagnosis of her special needs child, how she creates time for herself, and techniques for journaling and changing your negative self talk. We also deep dive into fear, intuition, and the importance of change, and theres a lot of great relationship advice in there as well. I also ask her how she implements her practices into her children’s life, and how they deal with conflict with their kids and with each other. The goal here is to let you know you have the power to achieve the life you desire. This woman is so grounded, and speaks with such gentle power - I really hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed the conversation.

In Bed with Ariel Kaye, Founder of Parachute Home
57:51

Ariel Kaye grew up in Santa Monica, CA, and moved to NY to attend college. After ten years of work experience, Ariel was itching for something more. One day while shopping for sheets, she realized she was surrounded by the same plastic packaging and a bunch of unidentifiable brands, most of which had sheets covered with synthetics and chemicals.  So came the “ah ha” moment; most people knew where they bought their sheets but not the brand - there was no brand/customer connection. As someone who had spent her career building that connection in her years in advertising, Ariel knew it was an opportunity she had to take. So, she took some money out of her savings, and flew to Europe in search of a factory.  She learned about craftsmanship, got some pricing, and came back home ready to disrupt the industry. She spent a year developing the brand, raising small amounts from friends and family, and launched Parachute in January 2014. In this episode, we discuss her creative process, the importance of the feeling of “home”, how she raised over 40 million, juggling being a momma and business owner as well as Parachute’s next steps. It’s a great conversation you don’t want to miss. Stay tuned to the end of the pod, where Davide and I answer your relationship questions.

55:00

Sarah Yenbamroong is the wife of Kris Yenbamroong, and they are the owners of arguably one the best Thai restaurants ever, Night Market. I wanted to share Sarah’s story for multiple reasons, but the main one being that she has helped propel the restaurants into what they are today. Second, because her and Kris’s love story could be made into your next favorite rom com. They met at the iconic Corner Bistro in NY where he literally fought for honor. Fast forward 9 months later, she moved to LA into the house where Kris lived with his parents. She went from being a fashion writer to helping Kris and his family grow their business to what they are today. Night Market now has three locations in LA, they have a wonderful cook book, and have been featured in the LA Times (multiple times), on Food52, Esquire, Thrillist, Eater, Bon Appetite, Vogue and so much more. We talk about losing our fathers, taking big chances, leaving your family to start a new one, Anthony Bourdain, funny stories about the restaurant and so much more. Taking control of your life with Modern Fertility
41:50

At 23, Afton Vechery was working in healthcare and private equity, when she started looking into women’s health and IVF clinics, specifically the unaddressed emotional component and lack of proactive fertility education. After her doctor declined her request to test her hormone levels, Afton had to go a fertility clinic, where she was charged $1,500 for a basic panel. And so began the journey to Modern Fertility, a women’s health company that provides a comprehensive, fertility hormone test you take at home for only $159. They also provide research, education, and support so you can present your doctor with your findings, and can make informed decisions about your life plan, and starting a family. In her research, Afton talked to thousands of women who received misinformation, roadblocks, and conflicting advice while just trying to be proactive about their health. Modern Fertility believes that we all deserve clinically sound information, so we can do what's right for us, whatever that may be. They believe that having a reliable, trusted resource for reproductive health information is a right — not a privilege. You all know I have been struggling my fertility, and specifically, our almost impossible healthcare system, so I am beyond happy to share this information with all of you so you can prevent what I’m going through now. Also, pro tip, Modern Fertility has an ovulation kit that you scan into the app, so you know exactly when you’re ovulating. Genius. Enjoy!

The Crown Affair’s founder Dianna Cohen on disrupting the industry and the importance of good hair routine.
49:12

Dianna Cohen, the founder of one of my favorite haircare brands, Crown Affair, started the company after a Google doc detailing her hair care ritual became a sensation. Not only was it helpful, it became communal, with friends, and friends of friends, chiming in and telling their hair rituals. It became obvious there was something missing in the market, a brand that told stories, rather than promoting what someone’s hair should look like. Once she took a deep dive, she was horrified at her findings, and spent two years developing Crown Affair, launching with very high-quality products at a fraction of the usual market price. This episode is important for a few reasons, the first being this girl has worked at some of the best, most disruptive companies of our time. We discuss breaking into the job world, what it’s like to consult for other brands, the importance of social media, and she talk a shit ton about hair. And I’m going to go on record here and tell you, the hair oil is one of the single best products I have ever used in my lifetime, and I’m a greaseball that doesn’t use hair oil. How Judy Can Save Your Life with the Iconic Simon Huck
51:12

Simon Huck grew up in Canada with a dream to do PR and manage celebrities, and boy did he ever. After interning, hustling, couch surfing and more, he eventually began working closely with some of the biggest names in the world, including Kim Kardashian. His career took a detour a couple years ago, when he and a friend were talking about the lack of informative, easy, and charming disaster preparedness kits, leading to the birth of Judy. Over 60% of Americans have no emergency plan, and Judy wants to change that statistic. In this episode we discuss Simon’s career, genesis of the Judy, and what it's like to disrupt an industry you know nothing about. Personally, I’m a huge fan - the kits are not only aesthetically pleasing, the contents are hand picked by preparedness specialists, easily identifiable and easy to use. More importantly, they make what is usually very unsexy, yet life changing information charming, oddly fun, and easily digestible. It’s a wildly informational episode. Also, don’t forget to stick around to the end of the episode, where Davide and I answer some of your relationship questions. Follow @simonhuck and @readysetjudy for more.

The Changing Lives of Youth in Foster Care with Zaid Gayle
51:49

Zaid Gayle is the co-founder of Peace4Kids, a non-profit, volunteer supported organization based on trust, equity and stability for children in foster care. I found out about the program from Instagram, after asking my audience how I can get involved in the foster care community. I was sent their profile by the hundreds, and quickly realized this was a uniquely special place. Peace4Kids listens, rather than teaches. They use volunteers, so the kids have an adult who has chosen them, rather than gets paid to be there. They work on building trusting relationships within their community of peers and adults who have experienced similar traumas, so they can reduce the likelihood of being re-traumatized, especially by adults who are not equipped to deal with the extreme behaviors and actions of a child who does not trust.  The youth learn to take ownership of their history which empowers them to determine its impact on their lives. Incredible programs, wildly successful individuals and even legislation has come out of this program. Please go follow @peace4kids on Instagram, considering donating and share this podcast - there is a lot of valuable information in here about empathy, systemic racism and the important role listening plays in changing lives.

Beautiful Skin from within with The Beauty Chef
52:51

Carla Oates created The Beauty Chef in 2009 after healing her family’s skin issues and discovering that beautiful, glowing skin begins with a healthy gut. After 10 years of working as a fashion stylist, Carla became a beauty writer, during which time she quickly realized the products she was writing about were full of synthetic substances and toxins. So, she began writing about healthier, natural alternatives made from plants and organic foods, which eventually lead to her first book, Feeding Your Skin. Years later, when her daughter began to experience eczema and allergies, she put her family on a gut-healing protocol that included probiotic-rich, lacto-fermented wholefoods. The difference in her daughter’s allergies was incredible, and her whole family quickly experienced improved wellbeing along with vibrant, glowing skin. She began experimenting with lacto-fermenting skin-loving superfoods in her Bondi kitchen and that’s how GLOW—The Beauty Chef’s first inner beauty powder—was created. The pioneer of the inner beauty category, The Beauty Chef now has a large range of bio-fermented, probiotic-rich wholefood supplements and topical skincare products, as well as two cookbooks – all of which I absolutely die for.  We talk about the gut skin and brain connection, and how she now works on her unique formulas with a team of leading microbiologists, naturopaths and nutritionists, employing cutting-edge research to develop products that support gut health and glowing skin. We also have a special guest this week, my momma, so stay tuned to the end of the episode, where we answer your relationship questions.  And don’t forget to check out @thebeautychef on Instagram.

Creating an opportunity for civil discourse with The Flip Side
44:32

In July 2016, Annafi Wahed left her corporate job in NYC to campaign for Democratic party candidates in New Hampshire. Walking door to door, she saw firsthand how even next-door neighbors could be completely isolated from one another by the news they consume. In the months following the election, as talk of "fake news" and filter bubbles became commonplace, Annafi set out to create a shared news source in a world of a billion news feeds. Fast forward, The Flip Side was born, a free website, Instagram and daily email subscription service that provides your daily digest of the best op-eds and analyses from liberal and conservative media. Everyday, you wake up, open your email, and there is a fact checked, detail oriented breakdown of current events as viewed by the left, and the right. It’s brilliant. Annafi’s op-eds have been published in The Wall Street Journal, The Hill, and USA Today. Her public appearances include everything from Fox & Friends and The Young Turks to academic panels and podcasts. This is truly one of the most wonderful political conversations I’ve had in a long time. Annafi is painfully intelligent, wildly informed and extremely graceful. A history lesson on pandemics, climate change, the need for grace and change.
48:28

Sarah Yeomans is an archaeologist specializing in the Imperial period of the Roman Empire with a particular emphasis on ancient science and religion. Currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Southern California, she also consults on educational programming at the Biblical Archaeology Society in Washington D.C. and is adjunct faculty at both St. Mary’s College of Maryland and West Virginia University. A native Californian, Sarah holds a M.A. in Archaeology from the University of Sheffield, England and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Southern California. She has conducted archaeological fieldwork in Israel, Italy, Turkey, France and England and has worked on several television and film productions, most recently as an interviewed expert on “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman.” She is a Provost Fellow at the University of Southern California, and is the recipient of a Research Fellowship from the American Research Institute of Turkey (ARIT) as well as a Mayers Fellowship at the Huntington Library and Museum in Los Angeles. Her current research involves ancient Roman medical technology and cult, as well as the impact of pandemic events on Roman society. She is generally happiest when covered in dirt, roaming archaeological sites somewhere in the Mediterranean region. I couldn’t imagine a better human to discuss our current pandemic with, considering she knows every detail about every pandemic in human history. We talk about the similarities of pandemics within the context of society, government and agriculture and how our current pandemic is much different than those of past (and by the way, conspiracy theorists have been around since the dawn of time). I learned a great deal about the role of climate change and other critical environmental factors, how pandemics are inevitable, the role of fear and how people’s reactions often create more damage and that it’s ok to feel scared, depressed and listless. We also touched on what’s living in the permafrost and how incredibly vital it is we stop our planet from warming. The beautiful thing is that be also discussed what happens next; how our knowledge of the past will propel us gracefully into the future and that we have a brilliant opportunity to see what our society is lacking and demand change. The common denominator is always the same, don’t be an ass hole, lead with grace, and VOTE! especially in local elections.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE & WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW WITH DR. LEKKOS
57:57

Dr. Lekkos is a functional medicine doctor and the founder of Bios Functional Medicine in Santa Monica. He earned his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, has a master’s degree in metabolic and nutritional medicine from the University of South Florida Medical College, and is board-certified in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. Unlike most doctors, Lekkos looks at you as a whole person. I was told by multiple people this man solves the unsolvable and man were they right. In our first session we just talked for two hours, just like, about who I am – which I don’t know about you, have never happened to me in a doctor’s office. Rather than bandaging symptoms, he looks at you as whole person, and address true underlying causes. His goal is to make you feel better now, while preventing disease so you can literally live your best life.  He also offers really cool regenerative services using adult stem cells to activate the body's built-in mechanism of self-repair and restore function to once declining health - essentially, he’s a master bio-hacker. Listen, I understand a service like this comes with privilege, so until our healthcare system makes much needed changes, I did my best to you all answers you need, including what most people should be eating, the importance of sleep hygiene, what supplements most people should be taking, why we need to cut out chemicals and most importantly, how effects of mental health on your body. This conversation was important to me, so we decided to skip out on our relationship Q&A this week. Enjoy!

From homelessness to the Forbes list with “alive ideas” with Suzy Batiz
01:15:44

We often hear inspirational stories, but Suzy Batiz, the founder and CEO of Poo~Pourri and Supernatural, really takes the damn cake. Although she recently tied the Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women with Reece Witherspoon, Suzy’s journey to success was a god damn battle. Suzy grew up in poverty, surviving childhood sexual and domestic abuse, two bankruptcies, three divorces and severe depression. She sold exercise equipment, opened a clothing store, a tanning salon, a beauty salon, sold lingerie, bought homes, sold homes and at certain points, became homeless. She was so focused on money solving her problems that she lost herself. Her “AH HA” moment came after reading Byron Katie’s Loving What Is, at which point she dropped everything and attended her 10-day seminar. Five years later, after filing for bankruptcy for a second time at 38, Suzy sold her first bottle of Poo~Pourri. I have been buzzing since we had this conversation and I am so lucky to share this story with you. Stick around and learn about my new favorite term, an “alive idea”, and stay tuned to the end of the episode to hear Davide and I answer your relationship questions.

Legendary Chef Evan Funke and How Shaping Pasta Shaped His Life
01:13:28

Evan Funke is a legend. He is a man fixated on perfection. A two time James Beard nominated chef with arguably one of the best Italian restaurants in the U.S., Felix Trattoria.  With over two decades of culinary experience, including working for Wolfgang puck and a quick stint as a teacher, Evan took a job he despised working under a chef from Bologna, who refused to teach him about his Italian cooking. So, he quit, bought a plane ticket, and moved to the Italian City for three months, learning from the iconic Maestra Alessandra how to make pasta. And so began the obsession – the shapes, the culture, the history….it came his life’s work. We talk about what it was like to opening his dream restaurant, and how hard it was to close it after realizing his partner was a con-man and how to rise from the darkness and get back up again. I am beyond honored to have him on the podcast – this story is one of resilience, dedication and faith.
