Episode Date
Robert Randolph
00:53:54

On this week’s episode Kraz talks with Robert Randolph, frontman of Robert Randolph and the Family Band. Randolph is one of the most galvanizing performers in modern music. His band brings an invigorating swagger to the blues, and the way that Randolph combines gospel, funk, and high-energy rock n’ roll makes for an exhilarating listening experience. They have been critically recognized with four Grammy nominations, and Randolph was ranked as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitarists by Rolling Stone at just 33 years old- as a pedal steel player!

Randolph throws the conventions of pedal steel playing out the window and completely redefines the role of the instrument. His touch is masterful- literally electrifying, and he’s one of those musicians who maintains such complete control of his instrument that he makes his craft look as easy as breathing. Paired with his soulful, impassioned voice, Robert Randolph’s musical formula is a recipe not only for a good-time night of grooving, but for spiritual, transcendent experiences.

Check out Robert and Kraz break down Robert’s musical journey from playing in churches to rocking out in arenas, dive into his introduction to his diverse pool of influences, and discuss his thoughts on the social progress being made in America.

Duane Betts and Devon Allman
01:01:55

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Duane Betts and Devon Allman, founding members of The Allman Betts Band. Devon and Duane each have had distinguished solo careers, but it was inevitable that one day the two would team up to revitalize their long-running familial musical connection. The Allman Betts Band formed in 2018 and kicked off their new musical endeavor with a well-received 2019 tour of the U.S., including several European dates.

Having grown up on the road enraptured with rock n’ roll music, it’s fitting that the two partners have made a livelihood out of their infatuation with the art form. While you may hear the band’s name and think of their rock-legend fathers Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts, make no mistake- these two young-guns have given new life to the soaring southern rock melodies that their fathers helped to pioneer.

In this episode Duane, Devon, and Kraz talk about growing up in the heat of the rock n’ roll daydream, songwriting chemistry between the two, Devon's incredible tale of meeting his father Gregg, and much more. Check out Kraz delivering another riveting interview with these two rockin’ reinventors.

Dave Schools
01:27:21

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with Dave Schools, founding member and powerhouse bassist of Widespread Panic. Widespread Panic has been an elite-level act in the jam scene for over three decades, and they are known for their lively fusion of southern rock, funk, and good time rock n’ roll. The band has gone through numerous lineup changes over the course of their lengthy career, and Schools has bumped the band along with his multifaceted six-string bass style since the very beginning.

Schools has a unique ability to stealthily shift between hard rock-based and funk-oriented grooves. His acute, intuitive interpretation of his influences, which he and Kraz discuss extensively in this conversation, has been a driving force in the wild musical trail that Widespread Panic has blazed throughout the country over the course of their career, including each of their record-breaking 60 sold-outshowsat Red Rocks

Amphitheatre.

In this expansive conversation, Schools and Kraz discuss everything from the formative years of Panic in Athens and the way they developed their sound, to differences between playing and producing music, to touching tales about late musical companions M ikey Houser and Neal Casal. If you’re a Panic fan or are interested in the concept of musical evolution, you don’t want to miss this deep cut of an episode.

George Porter, Jr.
01:29:10

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with George Porter Jr., funk-master and founding member of The Meters. Porter is a New Orleans legend, but his slick playing and deep-pocket grooves have made him a 4-string-fable across the globe. While Porter has touched on many musical styles throughout his career, there is an undeniable hint of Crescent City soul in just about every word he speaks during this colorful conversation.

In this episode, Porter and Kraz talk about the origin story of The Meters, Porter’s discovery of the bass guitar, playing with Bill Kreutzmann and The Dead, and many other fascinating tales of his extraordinary musical life.

Porter’s passion for music is undeniable, and it’s on full display when Porter talks about the “double-edged blade” of The Meters’ music being sampled in rap and pop songs- his playful and light-hearted attitude towards missing out on critical and financial recognition from others using his music is an earnest confirmation of his love for his artform- he’s just happy that these grooves still fill the air.

Oteil Burbridge
02:10:33

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with bass-extraordinaire Oteil Burbridge, who is best known for his playing with the Allman Brothers Band and Dead & Co. Oteil’s musical resume is next-level; in addition to playing with the aforementioned groups, Oteil is also a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and Tedeschi Trucks Band, and has worked with Col. Bruce Hampton, Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann, and many other legendary artists.

The conversation is too lively to be summed up in a few sentences, but in this episode Oteil and Kraz go deep on joining the Allman Brothers, learning the Grateful Dead’s songbook, new discoveries on the bass, and Oteil’s beautiful relationship with his late brother Kofi. If you’re a musician or simply a lover of music, this is a can’t-miss conversation between two longtime friends.

There’s nothing like an artist who approaches their craft with absolute passion and sincerity, and  Oteil’s spiritual connection with music is on full display in this jam-packed episode. The way he talks about music makes you want to pick up an instrument yourself and start jammin’ away!

Cory Henry
00:50:31

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with keyboard and organ virtuoso Cory Henry. Best known for his masterful keyboard playing with Snarky Puppy, Cory has recently gained recognition for his music with the Funk Apostles and for his new solo album, Something to Say. We already knew that Henry is an improvisational mastermind, and the new album showcases his ability to blend contrasting colors of the musical palette in a studio setting.

Henry has taken advantage of quarantine by making as much music as he can, and he looks forward to getting back to life on the road, even the 4:00 am lobby calls, as he jokes about in the podcast.

This conversation introduces the listener to the complex musical mind of Cory Henry, and in this episode you’ll hear Cory and Kraz talk about Cory's early days of playing, inspiration behind his new album, and future plans for the young star. Cory tells beautiful stories of his early encounters with music while playing the organ in church, as he talks admiringly about some of his favorite musicians and what they’ve taught him.

John Oates
01:02:33

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist, singer, and songwriter John Oates of the legendary pop duo Daryl Hall & John Oates. Hardly requiring an introduction, Daryl Hall & John Oates created music that has defied generational confinement, and since their formation in 1970 they’ve solidified themselves as one of the greatest pop acts of all time, selling an estimated 40 million records including six No. 1 hits.

This jam-packed hour guides the listener through the dynamic musical life of John Oates, offering an intimate look into his innovative artistic mind. John walks Eric through the inception of Hall & Oates, their studio approach, and the full-circle journey of this extraordinary duo.

In 2021, Oates hopes to hit the road on a summer Hall & Oates tour, and fit in as many side gigs as he can. As he mentions in the podcast, “I’d play live whenever I could.” Oates’ love of music is evident in just about every second of the podcast, and his passion for his art is infectious.

Reggie has gone on to a successful career as a band leader for both a fake late night talk show and now a very real one. Cory Wong
01:30:41

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and songwriter Cory Wong, whose intricate rhythmic style and eclectic solo projects have propelled him to prominence in the jazz and funk world.  Widely exalted for his ambitious and genre-fusing solo projects, Wong has also received critical recognition for his playing with Vulfpeck, who have erupted through the underground indie scene to plant themselves as a modern-day staple for funk music listeners.

In 2019, Vulfpeck became the first band without a label or manager to sell out Madison Square Garden, and throughout 2020 Wong has worked to continue to push new boundaries with his music.

Musically nurtured in Minneapolis jazz clubs by former members of Prince’s band, Wong has developed a uniquely percussive rhythm technique. In this episode, Kraz and Cory talk about the influences that lead to Wong’s stylistic development, dive in-depth on songwriting and recording, and deconstruct life as a musician.

Ani DiFranco
00:59:47

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks with guitarist and folk singer Ani DiFranco, who’s gained critical recognition in the neo-Americana folk world for unaffectedly blending her eclectic sound with socially and politically charged lyrics. She is also widely accredited for mothering the DIY movement in music. DiFranco started her own record label, Righteous Babe, when she was 19 and has since released 22 studio albums. In 2019 she put out a memoir, titled No Walls and the Recurring Dream, in which she details her life as a musician and activist.

Last month Ani released a double single, “Do or Die” and “Contagious,” along with a music video for the former. The video promotes voting by dropping the viewer into an illustrious, quintessential display of the streets of New Orleans, to culminate with a social justice street-dance-party, ending in a silent tribute to justice by the Magnolia Bridge. The slick, Wurlitzer-decorated groove in combination with her versatile vocal dynamics provide a nifty instrumental section to compliment her message of unity and justice.

Ani and Kraz talk through her recent projects, the journey to the digital age of music, and about her musical style choices and breakthroughs. Ani goes in depth on the influences that brought her to her current standing, and how she did it herself to become a matriarch for the DIY movement in music.

Theo Katzman
01:42:38

On this episode of Plus One Eric welcomes Theo Katzman, drummer, guitarist, and vocalist for the funk band Vulfpeck, who’ve used masterful marketing and creative music videos to amass an enormous underground following. In 2019 Vulfpeck became the first band without a manager or record label to sell out Madison Square Garden, and in 2020 they’re continuing to push the boundaries of independent music.

Earlier this year Theo released his third solo record entitled “Modern Johnny Sings: Songs in the Age of Vibe”, which features his smooth falsetto singing more personal lyrics than ever over his vintage funky singer-songwriter sound.

Theo’s dad played trumpet in legendary big bands with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, and Duke Ellington, and Theo and Kraz discuss whether musical talent and style are hereditary. The two friends also get into the good and the bad of digital recording and modern music technologies, the internet genius of Jack Stratton, and how Led Zeppelin was responsible for both of their first musical breakthroughs.

Son Little
00:50:42

On this episode of Plus One Eric welcomes singer and songwriter Son Little, whose blend of sonic and production styles hits a new level with his latest record “Aloha”, which he calls “aggressive lounge R&B”.

Little talks with Kraz about how Stevie Wonder and Prince were breakthrough influences for him, and the two reminisce about first meeting each other at a recording session with The Roots, who have featured Son Little on multiple albums. Eric and Son have collaborated on other projects since then, most recently the song “Apples” on Kraz’s 2019 record “Telescope”.

After their conversation, Eric and Son Little play a live, stripped-down take on Son's tune "about her. again" that you won't want to miss.

Jeff Bhasker
01:24:31

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to record producer Jeff Bhasker, who has won Grammys for his work with Kanye West, Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson, fun., and more. Eric and Jeff have been friends since college, when he was a jazz-obsessed keyboardist studying all forms of music but without a concept for what he’d make on his own.

Jeff describes how discovering Basquiat and other contemporary visual artists helped shape his own concept as an artist, and why “what’s the concept?” remains an essential question he asks musicians he works with.

Jeff also shares about working with Bruno Mars when Bruno was an 18 year old kid new to LA, and explains how he went from playing keyboard with Kanye West to producing his Grammy-winning records.

Andy Frasco
01:07:56

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to keyboardist and frontman Andy Frasco of Andy Frasco & The U.N. After interning with record labels as a teenager and managing bands on his own, Frasco was inspired to teach himself piano and make it as a performer. More than 10 years and 5 albums later, Andy Frasco’s engaging stage presence and the band’s soulful, bluesy rock have made Andy Frasco & The U.N. a fan favorite on the live music and festival circuit.

Andy tells Eric about constantly starting businesses as a kid and how that hustle helps him while making it as an outsider in the music industry. Andy also explains how he’s channelling his restless creative energy while stuck at home, his recent socially distanced concert at Red Rocks, and his process for making dreams come true.

Randy Jackson
01:04:54

On this episode of Plus One Eric talks to bassist, producer, and TV personality Randy Jackson about his musical upbringing in Louisiana and the many reinventions throughout his career. Steeped in the New Orleans jazz scene and growing up performing with local legends, Randy became a decorated session musician who played with superstars like Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, and dozens more.

A chance meeting with visionary producer Tom Dowd changed Randy’s whole perspective on popular music and led him into A&R, producing, and eventually to American Idol. A man who knows how to listen to and make hits, Randy currently manages nine writer/producers and a handful of recording artists, all while running his holistic health company Unify Health Labs, and recording an album with Journey.

Randy and Eric discuss all of that plus their favorite guitarists, the power of New Orleans music, and joining forces on a future project.

Victoria Canal
01:03:16

In this episode of Plus One Eric talks to his good friend and one of his favorite young artists, singer-songwriter Victoria Canal. Having grown up across three continents and moving every year, from an early age Victoria used songwriting to channel her fears of not fitting in. It’s Canal’s complete comfort in her own skin that lets her trust audiences and be truly vulnerable with them, frequently bringing fans to tears.

Her newest EP, Victoria, released on August 28th, represents a giant step forward for Canal as a writer and producer, and the resulting tracks convey a maturity far beyond her 22 years. Hear Victoria tell Eric why a seaside cliff near Barcelona was the only place to record such a profoundly personal album, and why it feels right to release it during such a difficult year.

Cochemea Gastelum
00:36:39

In Episode of 18 Plus One Eric speaks with saxophonist and composer Cochemea Gastelum, whose 2019 album "All My Relations" is one of Kraz's most played records of the year. Cochemea made his mark as a member of The Dap-Kings, the potent funk and soul band behind the late great vocalist Sharon Jones. He's also played with artists from Amy Winehouse to Run The Jewels, always experimenting with effects and other sounds you might not expect from a sax player.

Cochemea brings that same experimental ethos to his solo material, drawing inspiration from his native roots and incorporating Navajo melodies, a Sanskrit prayer, and Mexican huapango rhythms with jazz and funk arrangements to produce a record that is truly one of a kind.

Eric and Allen also discuss fatherhood, the lifelong search for contentment with the touring life, and what they tell up and coming artists when they're asked for advice.
