Special Episode: Black Lives Matter and Your Campaign
00:23:46

Expressing your support for the BLM movement and addressing the concerns of racial and social justice activists in your community will be essential parts of running a winning progressive campaign this year. That’s why Joe and Martín have devoted this episode to going over what you need to do to ensure your campaign appropriately and effectively engages the BLM movement and clearly demonstrates your support for racial and social justice. You will also need to adjust your strategy based on the type of race you are running in. If you are running in a partisan progressive vs. conservative race, your message will look much different than if you are running in a nonpartisan progressive vs. progressive race.

Special Episode: Presidential Election Predictions—Do They Really Work?
00:27:09

If we had a crystal ball that could tell us exactly what the outcome of the presidential election will be, many of us would sleep a lot easier at night. But of course, we do not have a crystal ball, and instead we turn to myriad polls, models, and other predictors to try to tell what’s going to happen on election day. That’s why Joe and Martín spend this special episode breaking down the rationale behind some very wonky models as well as some very wacky ones. From looking at factors such as the performance of the economy to consumer trends like popularity of Trump Halloween masks to downright wacky predictors such as a Chinese mystic monkey, there is no shortage of ways to predict the presidency!

Special Episode: Kanye West 2020 and What Third-Party Candidates Mean for Your Race
00:18:31

What do U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders, Angus King, and Lisa Murkowski and rapper Kanye West have in common? They’ve all been third-party candidates! But, three of them have been legitimate third-party candidates, and one is more of a spoiler. Tune in to this special episode to learn what a third-party candidate means for your campaign and how you need to respond. A third-party candidate running in your race could just be a perennial candidate who runs for office as a hobby, or it could be a real threat to your chances of winning. As Joe and Martín point out, the worst thing you can do is ignore them. Also be sure to check out The Campaign Workshop’s Where’s Kanye? ActBlue was used by every 2020 Democratic Presidential Candidate and is on track to raise over $3 billion for Democrats by the end of the 2020 cycle. Ep. 10: Get Out the Vote (feat. Professor Donald Green)
00:37:03

After months of door knocking, ad buying, hand shaking, picture-taking and town hall-ing, you might be tempted to think there’s nothing else to do come election day. False! You need to run an effective get out the vote campaign! Even if you convince your whole district to vote for you, it won’t matter unless they turn out at the polls on election day. That’s why in this episode, Joe and Martín teach you just how to do that. They give you the cold, hard truth about five of the biggest GOTV myths, discuss which voters to target for GOTV, and how to leverage social pressure correctly to nudge people to the polls. Martín sits down with the leading researcher on GOTV, Professor Donald Green of Columbia University, who literally wrote the book on GOTV. Professor Green breaks down what the research tells us about effective GOTV from what percentage of text message recipients will actually go to the polls to how low-budget campaigns can best leverage their resources to win.

Ep. 9: Paid Communications and Media Consultants (feat. Colin Rogero)
00:30:47

In order to win your campaign, you need voters to know your name as well as your campaign message. That’s why it's important to invest in paid communications, and if you can afford it, a media consultant to guide you through media strategy and help produce advertising spots for TV, radio, and social media. But what makes eye-catching creative work and how many spots do you need to buy so your message is heard? Joe and Martín answer these questions and more in this episode to teach you about the importance of message consistency across platforms, how many times a voter needs to hear your message for it to resonate, and how to balance paid and organic media. Joe speaks with Colin Rogero to discuss the most important question you need to ask when choosing your media consultant, how to integrate your paid media and digital communications, and what small campaigns should do if they can’t afford expensive media like broadcast TV ad spots.

Ep. 8: Fundraising Like a Pro (feat. Amie Kershner)
00:40:04

If you think it’s hard asking strangers for money, imagine asking your own friends and family! Fundraising isn’t easy, but it’s essential to win your campaign. Most candidates will do anything to get out of calling donors, but Joe and Martín have some foolproof strategies to make fundraising easier for everyone on the campaign trail. This week, Joe and Martín discuss fundraising myths, where to find donors, and how to effectively ask for money. They are joined by Amie Kershner of AKM Consulting, and former fundraiser for the Democratic Priorities USA PAC. Amie will teach you how to shift your mindset from thinking about your donors as investors—investors in you, your campaign, and your vision. She also discusses the HR and logistics around hiring a fundraiser or fundraising team and the differences between having an in-house fundraiser and employing an outside fundraising consultant.

Ep. 7: Door-to-Door Canvassing (feat. Carmen Berkley)
00:31:11

There is no better way to get to know the constituents in your district than going right up to their door and talking to them. Canvassing is essential, and it often becomes the most fun part of any campaign! Getting to know your neighbors, listening to the issues they care about, and telling them how you can help are key to not only convince them to choose you over your opponents, but also to convince them to turn out to the polls on election day. This week, Joe and Martín talk about the importance of canvassing and share some of their favorite stories from the field. Joe chats with Carmen Berkley, Chief Strategy Officer of Dancing Hearts Consulting, about her own experiences with canvassing, how to do it effectively, and how canvassing can and will help you win.

Ep. 6: Hiring a Good Campaign Manager (feat. Brandon Davis)
00:38:22

When you run for office, you need to surround yourself with people you trust and people who believe in you. Choosing a campaign manager is one of the most important decisions you will make. You may have a plethora of campaign managers waiting to work with you, or you may only have a few friends or family members to choose from. This decision is going to be tough, and so this week, Joe and Martín chat about what to look for in a campaign manager and how to find the right one for your campaign. Martín is joined by Brandon Davis, Principal at GPSImpact, and former Chief of Staff at the DNC to share with you what he thinks you need to look for in a campaign manager.  Brandon has managed eight campaigns and has worked on over twenty, so he knows a thing or two about hiring campaign managers.

A campaign, like any business, needs to have streamlined and coordinated HR practices. Everything from onboarding to writing an employee handbook is essential, but can take time away from the campaign trail if you don’t do it right. Ep. 2: The Candidate Perspective (feat. Mayor Annise Parker)
00:38:45

Mayor Parker has run in 11 races and won nine in a row, so she knows a thing or two about what it’s like to win and lose. She has served as an elected legislator, an administrator, and as an executive, and now she works to help elect other LGBTQ+ candidates across the country.  Martín was super excited to interview Mayor Parker this week and we hope you are super excited to take a listen! Joe and Martín also discuss some of the most challenging aspects of running for office and what you can do to not only survive, but thrive on the campaign trail.
