I just found Darin Olien in the Netflix's series, and since them I follow him. Great podcast, let me know if you come to Spain, it'd be great to know you! my bet wishes

Description

In the Darin Olien Show, each episode is packed with honest, inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same - to save the planet one conversation at a time. We’ll talk about how to fuel your body, boost your immune system and even sustain yourself on a plant-based lifestyle. We present tangible tips, tricks and methods to get you feeling your best and living your best life. My mission is to stop you from falling into society’s fatal conveniences- the things we do that we’re indoctrinated into thinking we have to, even though those very things are negatively affecting us, and in some cases, slowly destroying and killing us.

Episode Date
#33 Fatal Conveniences™: Milk: The Billion Dollar Dairy Con
23:52

A glass of milk a day keeps the doctor away. Well, that's what we're made to believe. By consuming dairy products daily, you may feel like you're ticking off another box on your healthy diet list. But what if you learned that there's a whole world of corruption, propaganda, health misconceptions, and disease, all linked to the white stuff you're pouring on your cereal each morning?

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences

This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us.

I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make.

So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

The US government spends an estimated 4.5 billion a year to subsidize the dairy industry.

But, who's really pulling the political strings? Since, well, forever, we've been told how fantastic milk and other dairy products are for our health. Some of you guys may even remember that crazy "Got Milk?" ad campaign, which was the dairy industry's attempt to make consuming milk cool.

Now, as more research comes to light, we're starting to see how wrong we've been. Not only is the information we've been fed way off the mark, but the animal welfare side of the industry is pretty hard to stomach too.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I'm looking into the shocking realities behind our love for all things dairy. I break down some of the health risks behind too much milk and the things you can do not to feed into the industry. Also, the two big brands that have their dairy-loving hands firmly in the wrong people's pockets.

The dairy industry is a scary business. From the way we extract milk, to the misconceptions we've all been fed for decades. But it's okay, together we can make a change.

Other great info in this segment:

  • The first dairy animals to be domesticated
  • Why new science behind dairy needs so much attention
  • The health risks of consuming too much dairy
  • Does calcium help prevent broken bones?
  • The potential ways dairy can harm us
  • What we can do to ensure we get calcium in our diet- the right way

#32 Adam Sud on Treating Addiction with a Plant-Based Diet
01:09:30

When we feel like we're broken or unworthy, we can wind up finding fixes in unhealthy places. In 2018, almost 53 million people aged 12 years and older misused prescription drugs in the United States. As addiction rates continue to climb, the health of the nation is declining.

One popular solution for those seeking help is to treat the addiction and subsequent health issues with more medication. While this can work for some, others find that a plant-based diet is swiftly becoming the key to a healthy recovery.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.

On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they'll inspire you, too.

Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.

At first glance, you could say that Adam is your average kind of guy.

But scratch the surface a little, and you'll quickly see that he's pretty extraordinary indeed. Adam's story surrounds drug and food addiction, isolation, body dysmorphia, desperation, but also gratitude, acceptance, and redemption.

After becoming hooked on Adderall in high school, Adam spent most of his twenties going through a constant cycle of drug abuse and binge eating fast-foods. The more he consumed, the heavier he got. And the worse he started to feel within himself. As a result of his all-consuming lifestyle, during the peak of his addiction, he was over 300lbs with Type-2 diabetes.

Broke, unemployed, and completely cut off from family and friends, the time had come.

By August 21st, 2012, he had to make a choice- was he in, or was he out?

All his fear, anger, and self-loathing had pushed him to breaking point. Late one night, he attempted suicide by drug overdose. Fortunately for us and everyone that loves him, it was a failed attempt. Finally, Adam reached out for help. After several stays in rehab and sober living facilities, he found sobriety. Also, he lost over 100 pounds, reversed his diabetes, and repaired his physical health, thanks to an active, plant-based lifestyle.

Now, Adam is a Certified Holistic Lifestyle Coach and graduate of eCornell's Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate Program. He is a diabetes and food addiction coach for Mastering Diabetes. He’s also an international speaker for the plant-based and addiction recovery movements.

In this episode, Adam recounts his fascinating story- and guys, let me tell you, it's intense. First, he jumps right into where his addiction stemmed from, the heartache he felt and how he turned his life around so he can now devote his life to others.

Also, we discuss how his plant-based diet reversed his diabetes and repaired his physical health. Adam discusses his most recent work, including The INFINITE Study. This ground-breaking study aims to explore the effects of nutrient-dense diets and nutrition education in early addiction recovery.

Other Great Moments From Adam's Story:

  • How a seventh-generation Texan became obsessed with food
  • The lens of "Am I Acceptable?"
  • Finding the fixes
  • A habit turned to addiction.

#31 Fatal Conveniences™: Shoes: Free The Feet
18:33

Did you know that each foot contains 26 bones, 30 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments? So, this insanely complex anatomical structure accounts for almost 25% of the bones and joints in your entire body. Not to mention the 200,000 nerve endings on the sole of each foot alone! So why do we insist on condemning these incredible sensory powerhouses to a life of padding and cushioning? Guys, it's time we talked about shoes.

So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Strutting Your Stuff Shoeless Is The Way To Go!

Once again, it turns out that even after thousands of years of evolution, Mother Nature still makes the best footwear. But we seem to have forgotten that. When we wear shoes consistently, what we're doing is reversing this marvel of engineering. Sadly, our love of fashionable footwear has drastically desensitized our feet and changed the way we walk. Therefore, over time, they have even altered the human gait.

For the last 15 years or so, I've spent about 90% of my time totally shoe-less. Now, bear with me; I haven't gone completely bananas just yet. But, by ditching the kicks, you'll be rewarded with some pretty amazing health benefits.

In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the importance of letting your feet breathe. I also look at our feet and how getting a bit more grounded can work its magic across your whole body. I also explore why shoes change the way we walk and the things you can do to retrain your feet to be free.

Other topics in this segment:

  • Why we're getting too much cushion for comfort
  • Why we should build up our foot's sensitivity to the earth
  • The research and studies that bring more light to foot health
  • Weakness, stiffness, and flat feet- Oh my!
  • How you can reconnect with your feet (and nature)
  • The best brands for keeping your feet happy
  • Why bad foot care affects you from head to toe

#30 Steven Sashen on Running Barefoot
01:09:06

25% of the bones and joints in your entire body are located in your feet and ankles. Also, you have over 200,000 nerve endings on the sole of each foot. So why are we covering up these sensory powerhouses with padding and cushioning? Walking around or even running barefoot, or with footwear designed to let the feet be feet, can improve our overall physical health in ways we never imagined.

Steven Sashen dives into things feet first.

In fact, it’s his company motto. Xero Shoes was built out of a need for Steven to free his feet. After picking up sprinting again following a 30 year hiatus, Steven would injure himself constantly. Every couple of weeks would bring another pulled muscle or ankle strain. When a friend suggested a barefoot run, everything changed.

After his first run with a barefoot running group, Steven was awakened with a new awareness of how his feet interacted with the ground. He ran 5K on that very first go around and was shocked at how easy it felt on his body. He was even able to pinpoint a reason for why he was injuring one leg more than the other. All this knowledge was too empowering to ignore, and Xero Shoes was born.

In this conversation, Steven and I get into how incredibly powerful and intuitive our feet really are. We explore the foot to brain connection and how the modern day athletic shoe is counterproductive to the way we physically interact with the ground under our feet. Steven gives us the origin story of Xero Shoes, which gives you an understanding of why I refer to him as a “Master of Movement”. So kick off your shoes, and take a listen to this one, guys!

Other topics in this episode:

  • Steven’s history with movement
  • How to recognize  “Big Shoe” propaganda
  • How Steven’s research background at Duke helped fuel Xero Shoes
  • The lies we’ve been fed about our feet
  • How watching a child run barefoot can give you better idea of how the body is supposed to work
  • The truth about your arch
  • The copycat nature of the athletic shoe industry
  • Dr. Irene Davis and her contribution to barefoot running
  • Balance and the elderly
  • How tricking your brain can keep you young
  • Steven and Lena’s Shark Tank experience with Mr.Wonderful

#29 Fatal Conveniences™: Bug Spray: Fight the Bite
22:09

We’re outnumbered, folks! The estimated number of insects to humans is 200 million to one. This is a battle we will most definitely lose. Yet, we try in vain. In this hive of insect activity, repellents can help you steer clear of nasty stings and bites. But is our reliance on bug sprays harming our health?

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences

This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Mosquitos are a pest!

Every year, a third of us will cover ourselves with almost five pounds of bug repellent to keep those blood-thirsty bugs at bay. Okay, so there is a good reason to do so. After all, there are many mosquito and tick-transmitted diseases to ward-off; West Nile virus, malaria, and Lyme Disease, to name a couple. So, I'm not here to tell you that protecting yourself from bites isn't important. But, if the repellent you're using can fend off mosquitoes, maybe what it's doing to you isn't so great either.

In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the most common toxic chemicals that lurk in insect repellents, such as DEET (N, N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), which is the granddaddy of them all. I also break down how these repellents affect children, and the simple things you can do today to keep insects away without sacrificing your health.

Bugs, insects, Insecta or insectum- whatever you call our hexapod invertebrates, these creepy critters are vital for our ecosystems. So, finding non-harmful, preventative alternatives is crucial for the survival of not only us as a species, but also this incredible planet that we live on.

More great info in this segment:

  • The three main chemicals in bug sprays
  • The effects DEET can have on your body
  • What is Picaridin, and should you be worried?
  • Permethrin and what it can do to your brain and DNA
  • How certain insect repellents affect children
  • What your best defense against but
  • The alternatives to mainstream insect repellents

#28 Dr. Andrew Huberman on The Soothing Science Behind Breathwork
01:07:34

Do you want to reduce stress, get better sleep, experience less anxiety, and have more emotional control? More and more research is showing that deep breathing exercises can help. If you’re constantly feeling off-balance, using daily breathwork practices might be the answer. So, let's take a deep, cleansing breath and dive right into it.

Dr. Andrew Huberman Tries to Find the Small Connecting Pieces to Life’s Biggest Puzzles

Since he can remember, Andrew has had a fascination with animals and biology. In particular, their shapes, how they move, and their unique specializations. As a kid, he would read countless animal encyclopedias. He would try to figure out where we, as animals, fit into this world.

Today, Andrew is an absolute powerhouse in neurological research. He is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the founder of the Huberman Lab, where he's involved in tons of breakthrough research on brain function, brain plasticity (the brain's ability to change as a result of experiences), and brain regeneration.

In his life-long quest to relieve suffering, The Huberman Lab focuses a lot on the visual system. Dr. Huberman’s team is currently studying how virtual reality can get rid of fear and anxiety and preserve sight in glaucoma patients. In fact, these insane experiments resulted in Andrew diving with great white sharks and climbing mountains without ropes or harnesses- all in the name of science, of course.

In addition, his work in the Huberman Lab at Stanford has been heavily featured in Science, Discover, Scientific American, Time, and the New York Times

In 2013, Andrew received the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award and the Biomedical Scholar Award from the Pew Charitable Trusts due to his research. Then, in 2017, Andrew also won the ARVO Cogan Award. Primarily because of his contributions to vision science.

In this episode, Andrew and I talk about why stress is actually good for your immune system. Also, we dive into the immense stress-relieving power behind breathwork and how your eyeballs are just another part of your brain. This totally fascinating episode gets right to the heart of proper breathing practices and how this simple act can positively impact your state of mind.

Guys, this is not one to be missed!

Other topics in this episode:

  • Andrew's scientific roots
  • From college dropout to world-renowned neuroscientist
  • The ethics of neuroscience
  • Hollywood photographers, great white sharks, and underwater brain scans

#27 Fatal Conveniences™: Sunscreen: Counterproductive Chemicals
21:06

The sun is so incredibly vital to our health. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it begins to manufacture its own vitamin D. Vitamin D production is crucial to many body functions like calcium absorption, maintaining healthy bones and boosting the immune system. So why are we slathering on chemicals to block the sun rays?

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™.

So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Human beings need sunlight.

I know many of you are probably thinking “But Darin, what about sunburn? What about skin cancer?” And those are valid concerns. I go into depth on both of these subjects in this segment. But my point is this: when you apply sunscreen to your skin, you are absorbing dangerous chemicals directly into your bloodstream. If cancer is what you’re trying to avoid, you’ll be sorely disappointed to learn that the very chemicals you think are protecting you are actually increasing your chances for many different kinds of cancer.

In this segment, I identify the four common toxins found in most sunscreens. I explain what they do to your body and why you should avoid them at all costs. I also get into the delusion we’ve all been fed our entire lives about the sun being dangerous. We need the sun! Don’t get me wrong, we need to use common sense. If you have a history of skin cancer if your family, then by all means, look for ways to protect yourself. But using chemicals is not the answer. If you need to use sunscreen, I go over what to avoid and what to use instead.

Other great info in this segment:

  • The 4 main chemicals in most sunscreens and why they’re horrible for you
  • The importance of Vitamin D
  • A frightening study from the FDA
  • Melanin explained
  • What sun-bathing women in Sweden can tell us about the sun

#26 Matt Maruca on Letting the Sun Back in Your Life
01:02:38

Did you know that 92% of the average American’s life is spent indoors? If that doesn’t bum you out, I don’t know what will. We are creatures of light. The sun directly fuels us and gives us energy. When we actively work to block sunlight from our lives, it takes a toll on our health and well-being.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.

On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too.

Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.

Matt Muraca needed to figure out why he kept getting sick.

In his teen years, Matt had digestion issues that would show up after every meal. On top of his gut problems, he also had countless allergies and debilitating headaches. Even at a young age, he knew there must be a way to resolve his health challenges with diet. After experimenting with the Paleo diet and researching like crazy, he felt better, but not as good as he knew he could.

Today, Matt considers himself a student of the planet. His research has led him to focus on mitochondria. Matt describes mitochondria as “the little engines in our cells that keep us alive by burning our food with oxygen to make water and energy.” One of the most significant factors in how well our mitochondria are functioning is sunlight. The sun fuels our mitochondria, and as a direct result, it fuels us.

Matt is a passionate messenger about the power of the sun and how badly we need it back in our lives. He also educates others on the dangers of blue light and its effects on our circadian rhythm. His company Ra Optics (Ra, as in the Sun God), creates fashionable glasses used to block out blue light from computers, phones and TV screens.

In this episode, Matt and I get into some complicated scientific principles. Bear with us, guys, we definitely nerd out quite a bit. But I promise you, it’s worth it. We really need to understand how our bodies work, at the cell level. Once you understand the nitty-gritty details of mitochondria, you’ll want to provide them with the best fuel possible so that you can feel great every day. So, go outside, lay out in the sunshine, and enjoy.

Other great tidbits in this episode:

  • The story of Matt’s health issues
  • Dr. Jack Kruse and his impact on Matt’s research
  • The relationship between spirituality and light
  • The science of the origin of life
  • Genes and Nature vs. Nurture
  • What happens when your mitochondria are damaged

#25 Fatal Conveniences™: Conditioner: Smooth & Silky, At What Cost?
24:19

Advertising will have us believe that hair isn’t attractive unless it’s smooth and silky. And you can’t get smooth and silky hair unless you use products packed with harmful toxins. Not true! You can use conditioner on your hair. You just need to know what to look out for.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™.

You can get silky smooth hair without sacrificing your health.

Did you know that the FDA does not require companies to provide the exact ingredients in their shampoos or conditioners? The FD&C Act allows companies to release beauty products onto the market without reviewing its ingredients. Nobody is looking into this stuff, guys. They can get away with throwing in all sorts of harmful chemicals into these bottles of product and no one is aware. Parabens, sulfates, chemical fragrances- they’re all in there. And they’re wreaking havoc on your body’s delicate systems.

I don’t use shampoos and conditioners daily, but I do use them. I have longer hair and I like it to look nice. So, yes, I use conditioner. #24 Ben Greenfield on Engaging in Future Thinking
01:03:31

Your story is not just about you. The actions you are taking today can impact the people of tomorrow. When it comes to future generations' health and well-being, we need to decode some of our negative behaviors and provide our kids with a richer way of living.

Ben Greenfield is a world-renowned biohacker.

And probably one of the healthiest people on the planet! But that wasn’t always the case. Before his health journey, he lived off hotdogs dipped in peanut butter, pizza and cheap beef burgers. Despite that, to look at him now, that is all a very distant memory.

He’s currently a body and brain performance coach and author of 14 books. This includes the New York Times Bestseller, Beyond Training. He’s a speaker, host of one of the world’s first fitness podcasts Ben Greenfield Fitness, and CEO of Ben Greenfield Fitness and Kion.

In 2013 and 2014, Ben became one of the world’s top 100 most influential people in health and fitness. As 2015 rolled in, Ben was coaching some of the world’s leading CEO’s, chefs, biohackers, endurance competitors, and professional athletes.

Meanwhile, Ben’s quest for ultimate fitness and health never ends. As part of his pursuit of becoming the next real-life superman, he willingly tests and experiments biohacking techniques on his body. If you look at the results, it's insane. For instance, as he celebrated his 37th birthday, his biological age was sitting at an impressive 20.

This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his accolades and achievements.

In this conversation, we talk about how your current health habits could be harming future generations and the ways you can reverse it. Also, Ben describes his eclectic childhood and how his health-conscious, home-schooled kids are learning through doing. To top it off, he tells us the ultimate morning ritual that sets you up for life.

Ben is a genius when it comes to optimizing our health, and I’m so excited for you to get an insight into how his mind works.

Other interesting parts of our conversation:

  • Take two- the interview that never was
  • Why you should engage in plant medicine as a couple
  • Ben’s incredible childhood education
  • Unschooling – how his kids are learning through doing
  • Why there is never any “forbidden fruit” in the Greenfield household
  • The five things that a kid should know
  • How to begin changing intergenerational trauma
  • The optimal morning rituals we all can try

#23 Fatal Conveniences™: Caffeine: Consuming Coffee With Caution
19:19

Java. Brew. Cup-o'-joe. Whatever you may call it, one thing is clear; we love coffee. We’re so hooked on the stuff that it has become the second most consumed beverage on the planet! Across the world, we are chugging down an estimated 2.25 billion cups per day. While this can become a bit of a steamy and controversial topic, there are a few hidden secrets behind the bean's most prized asset. We're talking about caffeine.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™.

Please, don't hurt the messenger!

Before you guys reach for your pitchforks, you must realize that I'm not totally against coffee. In fact, there are tons of health benefits. But I do want to highlight some caffeine-related facts so that you're more informed when it comes to your morning boost.

In this Fatal Conveniences™ segment, I'm taking a closer look at caffeine's many aspects and why it's classed as a psychoactive drug. I dive into how much is too much, right down to the milliliter. Also, I explore the unexpected slinks between caffeine and female fertility. I get into energetic goats in Yemen, the Sufi rituals of southern Arabia, and the caffeine dispute within the inner circles of Coca Cola.

So, fire up the percolator, listen and learn, folks; this is not one to be missed.

Inside This Fatal Conveniences™ segment:

  • Where our love for coffee began
  • The bitter bean that’s a poisonous pesticide
  • The ancient rituals of coffee
  • How caffeine affects your brain
  • What makes caffeine a convenience
  • The connection between caffeine and stem cells
  • The good things in our brews that we all can enjoy
  • How you can safely consume caffeine

#22 Dr. Joel Fuhrman on The Nutritarian Diet and How it Can Save Us All
59:34

You hear me talk about it a lot. What we eat has a huge impact on our health and the health of the environment. What if I told you that nutrition is even more powerful than any of us are led to believe? By eating a Nutritarian Diet, you can protect yourself against heart disease, diabetes, cancer and even dementia. We’ve always had all the answers, and now it’s time to use them.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman knows more about nutrition than anyone I’ve ever met.

In fact, he’s written 13 books on the subject. Seven of those have become New York Times bestsellers, including Eat to Live and his latest, Eat for Life. From a young age, Dr. Fuhrman was obsessed with healthy food. Growing up in Yonkers, NY, he would spend hours reading books with his father about the science of nutrients. His healthy eating style gave him an edge as a teenage athlete. In 1976, he placed 3rd in the world for pairs figure skating. These unique credentials gave him authenticity while advising Olympic athletes on nutrition years later.

Today, Dr. Fuhrman is a champion for the “Nutritarian Diet,” a phrase he coined himself. This health-driven way of eating focuses on a diet full of nutrient-dense whole foods. He’s a firm believer in the dangers of the standard American diet. Processed foods, sugars, and chemicals are slowly killing us, and the doctor has proof. Throughout his 35+ year career, he has seen the healing power of the Nutritarian Diet. Patients suffering from kidney failure, heart disease, morbid obesity, and even cancer- all healed by completely overhauling their eating habits.

In this conversation, Dr.Fuhrman breaks down why nutrient-rich foods are essential for preventing disease. He gives us some frightening US health statistics that even I wasn’t aware of. We go over easy ways to add more plant-based meals into your diet, and why supplements are essential. His wealth of knowledge is unmatched in the nutrition world, and I’m so excited for you to hear what he has to say.

Other amazing info in this episode:

  • Dr. Fuhrman’s medical school experiences
  • The secrets to health we’ve known all along
  • Why we need to change our education system to include nutrition
  • A breakdown of the Nutritarian Diet
  • A sample day of eating healthy whole foods
  • Scary American health statistics
  • The simple principles the doctor teaches his patients
  • GBOMBS and how to include them in your diet
  • What it means to have a “hormonally favorable” diet
  • What it means to eat clean
  • The dangers of animal products
  • Why you have to change your personality to eat healthy long term

#21 Fatal Conveniences™: Anti-Aging Skincare: The Youthfulness Scam
18:03

We are spoilt for choice when it comes to anti-aging skincare. Walk into any pharmacist, and you'll see shelves lined with promises. Fewer wrinkles, youthful, glowing skin are just some of the claims that these products make. But, when you dig a little deeper, the reality of these cosmetics isn't so pretty.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™

This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us.

So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

Aren't the advertisers and marketing teams of these skincare products smart? They've made us think that we're not beautiful and wonderful just as we are. I do get it though. Slowing down the signs of aging and feeling better about what you see in the mirror is something we all want. But you must remember that what goes ON your skin, goes IN your skin.

I'm going further than skin-deep in this segment to uncover some of the hidden toxic ingredients lurking in anti-aging skincare. I discuss mercury and Teflon, the two bad boys lurking within your cosmetics. I unravel just how they affect the body, and the proactive steps you can take to make better purchasing choices.

Other topics from this FATAL CONVENIENCES™ SEGMENT:

  • Why you should vote with your dollars
  • The keywords to look out for when checking cosmetic labels
  • Would you put Teflon on your face?
  • The FDA's take on anti-aging products

#20 Suzanne Somers on Discovering Your Strength In a Sea of Adversity
01:06:26

Life is a journey that you can't plan out. When we hit inevitable roadblocks, it can be hard to see any other way than down. During these times of adversity, each of us needs to find our strength. One way to do that is to take from the negatives in your life and use it as fuel to create your power.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you.

Suzanne Somers is Hollywood royalty.

In 1977, Suzanne became a TV icon. She played the cute blonde on the hit TV show, Three's Company. When the star asked for the same salary as her male counterparts, she was quickly booted from the show and labeled a "troublemaker."

While the industry was busy shunning her, Suzanne was secretly reinventing herself. She had stopped focusing on what she didn't have and built upon what she did have- visibility. The show had made her a household name. So she took that name to pursue a dream career in Las Vegas.

Soon she was starring in a big production, with all the razzle-dazzle you'd expect in Vegas. By 1987, she was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year alongside the legendary Frank Sinatra.

As 2001 rolled in, Suzanne had a significant setback. Her terrifying diagnosis of breast cancer forced her to take charge of her health, and her life. With her signature "I'll show you" attitude, she ultimately won the battle.

In this eye-opening episode, we get a glimpse behind the curtain of what makes Suzanne such a successful entrepreneur and health advocate. We look at how she found strength and reinvented herself, even with the odds stacked against her. Suzanne also tells us the motives behind some of her most iconic books, BreakthroughTox-Sick, and Knockout. You don’t want to miss this conversation.

Other Insightful in this episode:

  • How Suzanne went from TV icon to entrepreneur
  • Why you should listen to that voice in your head
  • How Suzanne changed her perspective on the worst day of her life
  • The murder of Dr. Gonzalez and Suzanne's brush with death
  • Suzanne's childhood from hell and the long road to forgiveness
  • How to invest in making healthier choices
  • Why Suzanne fried an egg on the pavement

#19 Fatal Conveniences™: Receipts: Handing Out Toxins
12:55

“Would you like your receipt, sir?” I always say no to this question. Why? Because that little slip of paper is full of toxic chemicals that seep into your skin. And most people have no idea how dangerous they are.

Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™. This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health, and the health of the environment around us.

I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps, so you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you, and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you.

In this segment, we’re diving into the dangers of receipts. Grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, banks- they all give these to you. And once you’ve handled them and shoved them in your pocket or purse, the chemicals they contain are all over your skin. Once on your skin, they slowly seep into your bloodstream, messing with your health.

The thermal paper used for these receipts is saturated in BPA and BPS. These are hormone-interrupting chemicals that can do real damage once they hit your system. Take a listen to learn more about what these toxins do to your body and why you should avoid them at all costs. Just say no to receipts!

Other questions I answer in this Fatal Conveniences™ segment:

  • What are BPA and BPS, and what do they do to your body?
  • Why do these toxins get on your skin so easily?
  • What should you do to avoid thermal paper?
  • What other things besides receipts use thermal paper?

#18 Jason Garner on Healing the Child Within
01:06:40

There’s a lot of pain in the world. There’s a lot of anger, a lot of frustration. Maybe the reason why nothing is getting solved is because we’re all approaching problems from a childish perspective. Growing as a person isn’t just about healing your present wounds. It’s about healing the child within us, and finally moving on from past pain.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.

On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

From the outside, it seemed like Jason Garner had made it.

Jason grew up with a single mom who worked three jobs just to get by. Living in a trailer, having to sell sticks of gum to buy hot lunch at school, he equated happiness with money. Like many of us, he assumed once he had money things would be so much easier. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.

In high school, Jason got his first real job working at a flea market. Being able to make twice the minimum wage and overtime meant big paychecks for a teen. He worked his way up to the beer tent, where he was tasked with recruiting local bands to bring in more customers. This organic experience gave birth to a lucrative career as a concert promoter.

In 2009, Jason found himself successful, rich and the CEO of an international music company. Then the death of his beloved mother sent him into a tailspin. He began to realize that the life he created was based on a lie. Money wasn’t filling the void inside.

So he decided to completely change his life. But waking up not knowing who he was anymore was terrifying. So after some listless wandering, he found a spiritual teacher and began to meditate. That’s when the healing began.

In this incredibly heartfelt conversation, Jason and I get into the hard reality that we all have a lost child inside of us calling the shots. It’s only when we explore that pain and figure out how to heal that we can start guiding our life with intention. Jason tells me why he decided to write his book And I Breathed, and how it’s facilitated his journey. This is a conversation everyone can benefit from. And it definitely parallels the woes of the world right now.

Other insightful tidbits in this episode:

  • Jason’s story of growing up in poverty
  • Why he equated pain with not having enough money
  • From flea market worker to the man in charge
  • How every argument you have with an adult is actually with a child
  • How Jason ended up on his therapist’s floor
  • The power of meditation
  • Why a broken heart is a perfect place to start your transformation
  • Why you should always ask questions in the heat of the moment

#17 Arthur Menard de Calenge on The Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields
01:01:36

It's not easy to get away from technology these days. It's the cell phones in our pockets, to the surrounding WiFi and Bluetooth. We can't just switch it all off and shut it down. As our homes fill with these electronic devices, we're also inviting in an unwanted guest—the hidden dangers of electromagnetic fields.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW,

On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

Arthur Menard de Calenge is a problem solver.

It all started with dinner. The guests sat around the table and took out their phones. One by one, they placed them face down on the table. Before long, the conversation turned to, "Surely holding a radiation-emitting device so close to you can't be good for your health?"

At this party, Arthur's brain started ticking away, and he decided to do some research. So, what exactly was happening to his body if he kept his phone in his pants pocket all day?

What he found blew his mind. Countless studies and peer reviews showing the potential harm that cell-phone electromagnetic fields (EMFs) could be having on your health. He saw words like "cancer," "cardiovascular disease," and even "reproductive issues."

Arthur has always understood how important maintaining your health is if you want to live a long, disease-free life. But to stop using technology altogether? Sorry folks, that isn't an option.

In a bid to protect the family jewels, he had to take matters into his own underpants.

Today, Arthur is the co-founder of Lambs, a stylish protective apparel brand that you'll want to wear.

Inspired by NASA's spacesuits, their coveted Faraday Line is a collection of comfortable T-shirts, beanies, and underpants that block wireless radiation. The super-soft, MET lab-tested cotton fabric is carefully interwoven with silver thread. Why is that great? Well, it blocks 99% of microwaves, like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cell phone radiation. It's also antibacterial.

In 2019, Arthur's revolutionary endeavors won him the Forbes '30 under 30' title. But, he's not letting that get to his head. This "shy kid" is taking the world by storm. And Lambs is growing it's apparel range to also cater to women.

Not only is Art a mastermind engineer, but for over ten years, he has been competing at the national level in Ski Racing and Karate. And, back in 2011, he was a French Collegiate Rowing Champion.

In this episode, Arthur and I are tuning in on a different kind of wavelength. We unpack the truths behind EMFs and the things we can do to reduce our daily exposure. Arthur also takes us below the belt and talks about how Lambs products work and why they're effective. This guy is an innovative genius. You're not going to want to miss this one.

Other Significant Bits To Get Stuck Into:

  • How Lambs became a global phenomenon
  • The scary reality behind our cell phones
  • The unavoidable politics surrounding wireless radiation
  • Taking a closer look at 5G
  • How do electromagnets work?
  • The electromagnetic effects on humans
  • The terrifying fine-print in your cell phone's manual
  • What is the solution?
  • What's next for Lambs
  • This episode’s  Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Sitting

#16 Ronsley Vaz on Why Your Voice Matters
01:10:38

It can be scary to say what you're thinking, especially in today’s divided world. We can’t let the divisiveness that surrounds us stop us from speaking our minds. It’s natural to be afraid, but say it anyway. Be courageous. Speaking your truth gives the people around you the unspoken permission to do the same. And that is powerful. Your voice matters.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

Ronsley Vaz knows a thing or two about speaking his mind.

I am so excited to introduce this episode’s guest to you. Ronsley Vaz is the curator of the first audio marketing agency in the world, Must Amplify. Ronsley and his team produce this podcast for me, but he does a whole lot more than that. Ronsley helps people find their voice, and then he amplifies it.

Podcasting is so much more than having a conversation with someone you find interesting. It’s a way to get your perspective out into the world, and have others hear it and apply it to their own lives. It allows your listeners to learn from you, while you’re learning from them, and your guests. It’s such a full-circle way to bounce ideas off of like-minded, and not-so-like-minded people in order to see things in a new light.

Ronsley knows all of this, but he didn’t always. Ronsley started his business journey so far away from the world of podcasting, it might as well have been in another universe. In 2013, his dream of owning and running a restaurant had failed miserably- and left him almost $500,000 in debt. He didn’t stay down for long though, and quickly started a new business venture- connecting talented chefs with time-poor entrepreneurs who needed a little help preparing healthy meals for the week.

This then led to starting his own podcast, Bond Appetit, which quickly gained an audience of over 1 million listeners in under 4 months and became Australia’s #1 food podcast. The technical side of podcast creation was the easy part for Ronsley, so he was puzzled when others came to him for help starting their own podcasts.

Then he had a lightbulb moment.

Realizing he may have something to offer, he began selling courses on how to start your own podcast. It worked. He was able to pay off his massive restaurant debt in just over two years. The success of these courses led to his greatest project yet- Amplify, the world’s first audio marketing agency. Ronsley and his team help others find their voices, and he gives them a platform in which to amplify it. He’s done it for me- The Darin Olien Show is proof!

In this conversation, we get into the importance of speaking your mind. Being courageous enough to put your truth out into the world is never arrogant. It’s critical, especially now, to understand why your voice matters. Ronsley tells us all about starting his successful business and how it led to creating We Are Podcast, the southern hemisphere’s first podcast conference. He also gives us some scoop on his passion project, the audio docuseries The Psychology of Entrepreneurship. You’re not going to want to miss this one.

Other great bits in this episode:

  • Ronsley’s story of starting and naming Amplify
  • Why starting a podcast came easy for him
  • The whirlwind of Bond Appetit
  • What sparked We Are Podcast
  • Why Ronsley was surprised people wanted to hear his voice
  • The difference between being fearless and courageous
  • The two things putting your voice out there gives you the ability to do
  • This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic:  Being Dishonest

#15 Dr. Pazio on How To Transform Your Health & Slow Down The Aging Process
01:08:59

What changes can we make to live a longer and healthier life? Sadly, so many mainstream medical systems deliver a reactive approach to healthcare, rather than a proactive one. Just imagine what we could all achieve if we stayed one step ahead of chronic disease and aging. But change is on the horizon. The secret to optimum health might just lie in medical engineering.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

Dr. Pazio is a healthcare pioneer.

Alexander Paziotopoulos, (aka Dr. Pazio) is the CEO and Lead Physician at The Pazio Institute. He's also somewhat of a medical engineer.

This guy is a highly sought-after specialist in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. His philosophy is one I'm sure we can all get on board with, which is to get all of us optimizing our health through personalized health care. That means taking care of the whole, even down to the smallest cell, to increase both the quality of life and longevity.

Admittedly, Dr. Alex is like the Sherlock Holmes of health. He dedicates hours of his time to each patient that walks through his door. Both he and his team investigate and analyze precisely what health issues need addressing before creating individualized plans that utilize some of the planet’s latest advances in medical science and technology.

But, it's not just about the physical healing here. Dr. Pazio checks the mental and emotional side too.

I could literally talk to him all day. In this episode, we cover a lot of

ground regarding all aspects of our health. We speak about the two anti-aging supplements we should all be taking, and why our guts love the smell of Autumn. We also explore stress and the cascade of health problems it can create. But don't worry, he also provides us with some stress-busting solutions.

You're not going to want to miss this one.

Other insightful stuff from my conversation with Dr. Pazio:

  • Why physicians should become engineers
  • How Dr. Pazio’s consultation process works
  • What is Pelvic Stabilization, and why is it so important?
  • How stress is slowly killing us
  • Why you should psychically listen to your heart
  • What’s your brain saying?
  • Why you shouldn’t dismiss pharmaceuticals entirely
  • Why both men and women need a healthy dose of testosterone
  • The things you can do to help your internal ecosystem
  • Why you need to tune in to your gut
  • How supplements could change your life
  • This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Sunglasses

#14 Stephen Brooks on How We Can Live More Efficiently Together
01:07:35

Now more than ever, people are searching for a better way. A better way to live, a better way to eat, and a better way to help their fellow man. We’ve always known the answers, but we’ve somehow forgotten them along the way. We have to work together collectively to bring about a healthier planet for us all.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™, the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

Stephen Brooks has so much to teach us all.

And he’s still learning, too! You may remember Stephen Brooks from my Netflix show Down to Earth, which I co-host with Zac Efron. You’ll see Stephen on episode 3, where Zac and I traveled to Costa Rica to visit Punta Mona, one of the oldest and most bio-diverse permaculture education centers in Central America.

What is permaculture, you ask? Well, there’s no better person on the planet to explain it to us than Stephen Brooks.

Stephen grew up in Miami, Florida, and always felt a strong pull towards nature. He had over 600 gallons of fish tanks in his family home where he took care of jellyfish, lobsters, fish and sea creatures he didn’t even know the name of. It’s that same instinctual curiosity that led him to move to Costa Rica and discover a better way to live.

Stephen firmly believes that we must treat the Earth as an extension of our own bodies. If we treat it well, it will provide us with everything we need to live a happy, full life. Permaculture expands on that belief, by stressing the importance of comradery with our neighbors. We must work together in order to thrive.

In this episode, Stephen and I have such a fun and enthusiastic conversation about everything he’s working towards in Costa Rica. His passion is infectious, and together we explore how you can take more of a vested interest in where your food comes from and why that is so vitally important. So take a little time and listen to my boy Stephen explain the magic of permaculture and how you can incorporate a bit of it into your life.

Things You Don’t Want to Miss in This Episode:

  • How it all started with a Grateful Dead concert
  • Stephen’s “aha moment” while living in Spain
  • Wisdom from Stephen’s late friend
  • How we vote with our wallet
  • What is Permaculture?
  • We all have the same goals, whether we realize it or not
  • A little bit about Ecoversity
  • Why we all need to unlearn
  • This Episode’s Fatal Convenience™ topic: Monocropping vs. Organic Farming

#13 Kenny Chesney on Finding Balance Between the Extremes
01:12:14

Performing night after night to sold-out arenas, pouring your heart out into every song, and drawing energy from the crowd must be an intoxicated feeling. But then after months of touring, it's over. How do you find balance between the extremes?

Welcome to the Darin Olien Show.

On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

Kenny Chesney is a country music megastar.

And he’s also a good friend of mine. Kenny and I work out together and hang out together. He’s just a real, genuine, sweet guy. In 1997, Kenny had his first #1 Billboard hit with “She’s Got It All,” off his album I Will Stand. Even before that, he’s been selling out arenas all over the world and continues to do so.

Standing in front of a 60,000+ crowd is a feeling Kenny struggles to describe. But it’s thrilling. He loves it. He thrives on it. He draws energy and magic from the crowd, and it gives him life.

But then the tour is over, and he’s just a guy. That transition has proven to be extremely emotionally draining for Kenny. And he struggles to strike a balance between the extreme high of performing, and the silence of the time between touring.

Kenny and I get into some deep stuff. I might not be able to relate to singing in front of massive crowds screaming my name. Still, I think we all can relate to feeling imbalanced when our work and personal lives are so different.

In this conversation, which was recorded pre-pandemic, I share some tips and tricks to finding balance in a chaotic life. We also discuss Kenny’s eating habits, which aren’t always the best, but certainly entertaining. And he gives us some dirt on what it’s like to work with Ed Sheeran. You’re not going to want to miss this one, that’s for sure.

Other great stuff in my chat with Kenny:

  • How Kenny prepares his body for a tour
  • The mistakes he sees other artists make
  • What Kenny’s downtime looks like
  • Why he struggles with balance
  • Why fame doesn’t feed your soul
  • How seeing Bruce Springsteen play live changed him
  • The love/hate relationship Kenny has with ice baths
  • The melodic genius of Ed Sheeran
  • How 4th Period Geography class in high school ruined Kenny’s eating habits
  • This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Shampoo

#12 Carlos Tanner on Going Beyond Your Sensory Spectrum- Saved by Psychedelics
01:11:51

There are parts of us all that could use a little healing. But if you're in a self-destructive cycle, harnessing the power of nature could be the medicine that saves you. Let's talk plant-medicine and psychedelics.

If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

In this episode, we're going well beyond the fringes of our perceived reality with a new buddy of mine, Carlos Tanner.

Carlos was living the ideal, all American dream. He had a beautiful house, a nice car, the perfect job. But what many people didn't see was his deep dissatisfaction with life, and a spiraling heroin addiction. It wasn't until he had a near-death experience involving his car and the Manhan River, that his life took a dramatic turn.

Today, Carlos is the founder of the Ayahuasca Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Iquitos, Peru. This research center offers healing retreats and in-depth educational courses. They continuously strive to understand the plant-based healing practices used by indigenous healers of the Peruvian Amazon. For anyone who has tuned in to the "Down To Earth" series on Netflix, (hosted by the affable Zac Efron and yours truly), you'll probably recognize Carlos from the last episode of the first season. We experienced some of his magical, plant-based healing practices first hand.

Carlos has participated in over 700 ayahuasca ceremonies. He regularly speaks about his experiences with Ayahuasca and his path to becoming a shaman.

In this episode, my eyes have truly been opened. Carlos tells us his insane back story, and how he landed his ultimate job working with one of the world's most sacred medicinal plants. We dive into his trippy, yet visceral experience during his first Ayahuasca ceremony, and the epic work the Ayahuasca Foundation is now doing for medicinal plant research and the planet.

Other Highlights From This Episode

  • Where Carlos’ love of medicinal plants began
  • What it was really like to have the “dream job.”
  • The near-death experience that put Carlos on a different path
  • The first Ayahuasca experience- from vomit to sombreros
  • What is Ayahuasca?
  • The hypersensitivity state and going beyond the five senses
  • Creating the Ayahuasca Foundation.
  • The surprising question Zac Efron asked at the retreat
  • This week’s Fatal Convenience™: Social Media

* DISCLAIMER & IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE*

Darin Olien does not encourage any illegal use or abuse of plant medicines and psychedelics, whether cultivated in nature or lab synthesized. Within the U.S., outside of religious ceremonies that include Ayahuasca, DMT, on its own, is an illegal Schedule I Controlled Substance.

It is advised that any individual wanting to use plant medicines should seek the advice of a licensed professional, as well as research laws and regulations surrounding plant-based medicines within their area.

#11 Rory Cordial on Transforming Your Health Like Your Life Depends on It
01:20:31

The human body is amazing. It is the ultimate, complex, yet beautiful machine that has an insane capacity to heal and adapt. Therefore, it deserves our respect and there are many simple ways we can all do just that.

WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW.

On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.

There are some people on this planet that are born with a rare gift, and I think my buddy Rory Cordial falls nicely into that category.

Coming from a family chock full of healers, it was only natural that Rory would also take the reins and become a physical therapist. As an artist in his own right, Rory’s rare healing and intuitive touch means he is highly sought-after. He’s spent many years travelling the world, working with the crème de la crème of this planet’s talent- I’m talking Oscar and Grammy winning entertainers and top performing, gold medal winning athletes here.

Rory is also the host of The Optimal Performance Guide Podcast, a show that presents his mind-bending conversations with high level humans, while also giving the guidance people need in order to adjust their mindsets and habits to hit optimal health performance.

In this episode, Rory and I are in a healing mood. We talk about his Physical Therapist father, and how he’s mentored Rory to become the pragmatically minded, miracle healer he is today. We also explore some of the aspects of health that everyone should consider adjusting, and the simple techniques we can all apply in our lives to become a little bit happier and way more healthier.

Other Bits From Our Conversation:

  • Growing up in a healthy environment
  • Going beyond the five senses
  • How Rory apts into his physical and mental state
  • Why meditation is better than cramming last minute for an exam
  • Why there is so much power in being subtle- especially when it comes to muscles
  • How gratitude can help you heal
  • What Rory thinks is the key to a healthy life
  • Why we should all map out a clear direction when it comes to our physical health
  • Why you need to commit, commit, commit!
  • Babies and the importance of movement
  • What it’s like for Rory working with athletes and high functioning people
  • How Rory would approach healing a sprained ankle
  • Rory’s ultimate goals for the future

#9 Lauren Monroe on Awakening the Heart to Itself
58:36

Sometimes we realize at a very young age that there’s something different about us. The difference doesn’t have to lead to insecurity or self-isolation. It could actually lead to something quite amazing.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

This episode features my friend of 25+ years, Lauren Monroe. You’ve probably heard of Lauren. She’s a singer/songwriter, medium, healer and spiritual teacher, and she happens to be married to the amazing Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard.

I knew there was something special about Lauren when I first met her. You know that strange pull you sometimes feel towards a stranger? Like there’s something spiritual and almost cosmic about your encounter? That’s what I felt when I met Lauren, and she’s proven to be one of the most unique people I’ve ever known.

Lauren has felt a connection to what she calls Divine Energy since she was a little girl growing up in Queens. Her paranormal experiences and unusual gifts set her on a path of discovery, one that she is still following today. She’s traveled the world learning from spiritual teachers and gurus, and channels everything she learns into her work and her music. Lauren co-founded, along with her husband, the Raven Drum Foundation and the Project Resiliency’s Warrior Resiliency Program which serves, educates and empowers veterans and people in crisis.

Lauren and I had a deep conversation about her journey to discover more about her inner gifts and everything that’s come with that. We touch on how she discovered her talent for healing with massage therapy and bodywork, and her passion for energy work. She gushes about her passion for music and how excited she is for the release of her new EP and music video on July 10th. You don’t want to miss this conversation with a truly special soul.

Other highlights from this episode:

  • The story of Lauren’s first vision
  • Lauren’s strong faith and what it means to her
  • Why it’s ok to go searching for answers if you’re not getting them from home
  • What indigenous people taught her about self-protection
  • The power of long-distance healing
  • The special frequency of Lauren’s music
  • The power of Grace

#8 Erik Cooper on Learning to Adapt by Throwing Yourself Into the Unknown
01:06:20

It’s amazing how one adventure to an unfamiliar place can completely shift your perspective on the world. It can even change the trajectory of your entire life.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

In this episode, I talk with the one and only Erik Cooper, adventurer extraordinaire. And when I say adventurer, I don’t mean someone who likes to go hiking or try new foods. I mean someone who is willing to immerse themselves entirely in an unfamiliar country, with a culture of nomadic people and go for broke competing in the toughest horse race in the world.

Erik grew up on a horse farm in a small town in Missouri. He always knew he wanted to explore, and his love of horses was just as strong as his sense of adventure. At 24 he heard about the Mongol Derby, a grueling 10-day horse race through the rough terrain of rural Mongolia. Known as “The Toughest Horse Race in the World”, the Mongol Derby changed Erik in ways he never expected it to.

I have such a fun conversation with Erik in this episode.  He told me some crazy stories of his first experience with the Mongol Derby, but we also got into the deep stuff on how it changed him. You get to hear some hilarious anecdotes about wild stubborn horses, getting lost in the mud, and how incredibly tough and amazing the Mongolian nomads are. And we dabble in some other crazy adventures Erik has had and his love of Eagle Hunting, which isn’t what you think. This is definitely an episode you don’t want to miss.

Other nuggets from my conversation with Erik:

  • Erik’s reasons for being drawn to Mongolia
  • What happens when someone breaks their neck in the middle of nowhere
  • How Erik trained for his first Mongol Derby
  • What happened in the first few minutes of the race
  • Why the team aspect is so important during a race like the Mongol Derby
  • Why Erik fell into a depression after getting back from his first Derby
  • The glorious details of Eagle Hunting
  • This episode’s Fatal Convenience: Dental Floss

#7 Rainbeau Mars on Evolving Your Life
01:13:49

Often, we can get hung up on an untrue self-narrative. In order to shake that off, we need to hold our noses, take the plunge, go deeper and discover our true worth.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

This episode welcomes a truly unique, beautiful, complex and badass woman, Rainbeau Mars. She is an author, Hollywood actor, model, yoga instructor, activist and natural health expert.

Ever since her birth in a teepee under a double rainbow, Rainbeau Mars has been somewhat destined to bring a little color into our lives.

After a successful career as a model and actress of the stage and screen (you probably recognize her from the controversial 1996 hit, The People vs. Larry Flynt), she decided to pack up her Hollywood life and return to her roots. She wanted to live a life that centered more around her original upbringing- the constant practice of yoga, natural health and activism, with a little bit of acting still thrown in the mix.

Today, Rainbeau is the author of the highly successful book the 21 Day Superstar Cleanse, which outlines her signature zero-calorie-restriction vegan cleanse. She also has been featured on The Doctors, GMA, E!, Extra, and Access Hollywood. Her instructional yoga videos have sold millions of copies worldwide and she now stands as the CEO of Rainbeau Mars Lifestyles, an Omni Media Company.

In this episode, Rainbeau and I get really freakin’ deep. She opens up about the hard truths she’s had to face when it comes to her biological family and growing up in a post-hippy movement environment. We discuss how she gets to grips with her own unworthiness and insecurity, life in Hollywood and how sometimes something has to die in order to be reborn.

Other highlights from my conversation with Rainbeau:

  • Why you should write your life story
  • What it’s really like to be the product of the ‘hippy revolution’
  • Healing yourself and owning your worth
  • A suitcase of cockroaches, a trip to India and a new path towards acceptance
  • Why you need death in order to experience rebirth
  • Life in Hollywood and why there’s truth in acting
  • Finding self-belief and taking action
  • This episode’s Fatal Convenience: Health Care System

#6 Steve Wright on The Art of Giving, Being Open & Saying YES
01:08:46

Have you ever wondered what could have been if you had just grabbed an opportunity and said ‘yes’ to something? Sometimes doing the right thing is just taking a chance and seizing the opportunities in life.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

My guest for this week's episode is a kindred spirit, and I'm stoked to call him a friend. You may know Steve Wright as the former NFL player for the Dallas Cowboys circa 1981. But, did you know he's also an intensely passionate innovator and entrepreneur?

Steve's entrepreneurial streak first appeared when he noticed that so many of his teammates were taking hard knocks and sustaining avoidable injuries. Early on, he became a proactive advocate for better safety equipment out on the field, which he still campaigns for today.

Fast forward to 1994, and Steve and his business partner Mike Davis have just founded the world's first sidelines mist cooling system called Cloudburst Misting Systems. It was so effective that in 1996, they won the Atlanta Summer Olympics cooling contract, which catapulted this innovative technology into the public eye. Since then, he has kept on innovating, creating and being an awesome human being.

In this mind-bending episode, we get a deeper view of the humble origins of Steve's career. You'll hear how most of his success stems from taking on a "Forrest Gump" mindset, and why Steve ended up as a survivor on reality TV. You'll also hear how living a minimalist existence has created a life that is certainly worth living.

Other snippets from our conversation:

  • How Steve's NFL career took off
  • Steve talks sports injuries and keeping safe on the field
  • Why Steve went from having Margaritas at a Mexican restaurant to creating a globally acclaimed cooling system.
  • How saying yes to a pair of shoes became a life-changing opportunity years later
  • Why you shouldn't chase the money
  • Steve's experience on Season 22 of 'Survivor'.
  • The importance of seizing an opportunity
  • Why Steve has embraced a minimalist life
  • This episode’s Fatal Convenience: Deodorants

01:12:31

If you’re an addict, it’s a part of who you are. Addiction doesn’t go away with recovery, but it doesn’t have to continue to be a source of negativity in your life.

This episode features my plant-based bro, the amazing Rich Roll. In addition to being a graduate of Stanford University and Cornell Law School, Rich is a world-renowned ultra-endurance athlete and host of The Rich Roll Podcast. He’s a wellness advocate, a sought after speaker, successful author of the mega-popular book Finding Ultra and devoted husband and father. He’s also a recovering alcoholic.

Rich is extremely open about his journey with addiction, and we get into some uncomfortable territory in this episode. But you don’t grow when you’re comfortable, right? Rich gets into how acknowledging his obsessive and addictive mindset has helped him fuel new, healthier goals. He also shares some cool plans for his podcast and how being plant-based has changed his relationship with food.

#4 Logan Gelbrich on Finding the Flow
01:35:28

Some people think they only have two choices in life- Door #1 or Door #2. But what if this linear thinking has held us back our entire lives and is preventing us from growing and evolving?

Welcome to The Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

This episode features my buddy Logan Gelbrich. Logan is the founder of DEUCE Gym, which has several locations in California. DEUCE features old school training equipment like boulders, weights, and things right out of a Strongman competition. They’re unlike any gyms I’ve ever been to before and became my workout home after I lost my Malibu home to the fires.

Logan is also the author of the amazing book Going Right: A Logical Justification for Pursuing Your Dreams. And let me tell you guys, this book is a mind opener. It explores the myth we’ve been fed our whole lives about only having two options in life, pursue your dream or take the safe route. It will shatter your thoughts on this kind of thinking, believe me.

In this episode, Logan and I get into some deep stuff and some amazing stories of his baseball days playing for the University of San Diego and professionally for the San Diego Padres. We discuss how we both have always taken the path less traveled as far as pursuing our dreams in life, and what that means for our personal growth. This conversation was a good one, guys, and I can’t wait for you to hear it.

Other bits from our conversation:

  • Why there is never just two choices
  • Why doing the hard thing leads to personal growth
  • Why pursuing your dreams is never reckless
  • What it means to find the flow
  • Logan’s movie-worthy baseball story
  • My story of almost being in a plane crash
  • Why Logan designed DEUCE the way he did
  • Power vs. Force

#3 John C. McGinley On Living In Gratitude
01:13:18

Behind every beloved character from film or television is an actor or actress that pours their heart, soul and personal experience into its creation.

My guest for this week’s episode is probably one of the most genuine, unique people I know, John C. McGinley. John has been in dozens and dozens of hit films like Platoon, Point Break, Wall Street and The Rock. He’s even shown his Broadway chops in plays like Glengarry Glen Ross. But perhaps his best-known role was as the loveable, but scary, Dr. Perry Cox on the TV show Scrubs.

What you may not know is that inspiration for Dr. Cox’s hidden heart of gold, as well as distinctive traits of other characters John has played, comes from his relationship with his son Max. Max was born with Down Syndrome and completely changed John’s life in ways he never imagined. Being a father to Max and daughters Billie and Kate is and will always be his most cherished role.

During this epic conversation, John and I discuss his current roles as an ambassador for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and the Special Olympics. We get into what being involved with these awesome organizations has taught him about life and the human spirit. We also get to hear some hilarious behind the scenes stories of John’s long, impressive career. But don’t worry, this isn’t some stuffy Hollywood guy bragging about his accomplishments. This is a down to earth, ridiculously thoughtful guy gushing about the gratitude he has for the amazing opportunities he’s had in life.

Highlights from my amazing conversation with Johnny:

  • John’s hilarious Edger Allen Poe soundcheck
  • How having a special needs son has completely changed his outlook on life
  • How John carries Max with him to every set
  • Why John picks Down Syndrome organizations that don’t just focus on “the Kumbaya”
  • What it means to live in gratitude
  • The Spread the Word to End the Word Initiative and how it came about
  • The adorable story of how Max introduced John to his wife
  • Why John juggles when he’s memorizing lines
  • John’s advice for new actors

#2 Chris Patton On How We Can Create a More Sustainable World
01:01:19

We’ve entered into a challenging new world, that’s clear to see. Not only for each of us individually but also as a collective. “Sustainability” is the word on everyone’s lips at the moment. But what if we already had the power to turn things around, right now, today?

If you don’t think that superheroes exist, you haven’t met Chris Patton.

In this episode, I chat with one of my greatest friends, Chris Patton. Don’t worry about trying to Google search this guy, because the likelihood of you finding anything on him is pretty slim. You’re not going to find a website, you won’t come across any interviews, or even a hint of him talking about what he does – but I promise, his story is heroic and totally epic.

Chris comes from the Pacific Northwest in Washington State, and up until the mid-’90s, he lived a relatively normal life. He closed sales at a car lot for a time, before switching directions to work in banking. His life was comfortable and secure.

It wasn’t until he received an urgent fax from a friend living in West Africa that his world took a skidding turn. It set him on a course towards monumental life shifts involving millions of dollars, death-defying escapes, and ground-breaking scientific discoveries.

This conversation is off the charts in terms of twists and turns. We dive into Chris’s whirlwind life, from gold and diamonds, getting shot and stabbed by militia and becoming a prisoner of war, to phantom movie stardom and rooting out the answers to some of humanity's biggest questions on sustainability. This saga has it all.

For the last decade, Chris has been one of the senior science advisors for the UN on Green Technology. He’s been advising the African Union for over 15 years, as well as sitting on various international economic advisory councils.

Chris has done more than most people could do in four lifetimes. He has an enviable dedication and vigor towards saving us as a species. That’s probably why he and I mesh so well.

This is not a conversation to be missed!

Other fun stuff in this episode:

  • How have you been adapting to this new world?
  • Who is Chris? The unknown origin story
  • From rumors that he was dead to a blockbuster movie
  • How a sock full of smuggled diamonds led him to the International Tesla Society
  • Why we have the technology to solve the energy crisis, but nothing is being done
  • The frustration of technological stalemate
  • Why “popular” science means nothing in the real world
  • How some of the planet’s greatest creators get taken advantage of
  • Why scientists should turn up the heat
  • The early days of invention

#1 Brandon Jenner On Why Empathy Is Everything
01:13:22

You don’t have to be disadvantaged to have empathy for people who are. Recognizing the good fortune you’ve been born into and using it to help you see the world through other’s eyes is something to be proud of.

If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet and want to learn more about society’s fatal conveniences- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you.

In this episode, I chat with one of my best friends, Brandon Jenner. You probably know Brandon by his last name. That’s ok, he’s used to that. In fact, the bulk of our conversation is about how Brandon has taken his inherited fame and used it to fuel his empathy for people who haven’t had the same good fortune he has.

Not only has Brandon’s signature empathy fueled his personality and the good he does in the world, but it also is the driving force behind his music. In his debut album, Plan on Feelings, Brandon got extremely vulnerable while writing the song “Anybody?”. We discuss the role vulnerability has played in his life and how you can incorporate it into yours.

Brandon is just an all-around great guy. It was fun to get to have a conversation with him about things we don’t usually touch on in our normal weekly hangs. I also got to pick his brain on his down to earth approach to wellness and healthy eating, which I think you’ll enjoy as well.

Other good stuff in this episode:

  • How Brandon felt pressured to be an athlete growing up, but turned to music instead
  • Why Brandon thinks every single member of his massive family made him who he is today
  • How traveling the world at a young age shaped Brandon’s perspective
  • How Brandon incorporates empathy into everything he does, especially his music
  • Why exercise is so important to him
  • How vulnerability plays a role in his life
  • Why it’s important to find someone in your life that you can open up to
  • The men’s group Brandon and I belong to and the role it plays in both our lives
  • The story of writing the song “Anybody?” from Brandon’s first album

The Darin Olien Show Official Trailer 1
02:35

I’ve traveled the world and witnessed vibrant cultures enduring difficult circumstances - with the environment around them being ravaged by deforestation, lack of food and limited access to clean water. In this podcast, we’ll explore how we can leave a healthier planet for generations to come, while diving deep into some topics that others avoid.

Let’s create a more sustainable planet for every creature living in it.

I hope you’ll listen to The Darin Olien Show with an open mind, an open heart, and a fire in your soul to do some deep diving. I’ll try my best to be your guide.
