Description

• The Creaking Door: One of the most iconic elements of the show was its opening and closing sound effect: a very slow, highly exaggerated, and extremely squeaky door. This sound, which became synonymous with the series, was reportedly created using an old, unoiled office chair.
• The Host: The show was famously hosted by a slightly sinister-sounding, pun-loving narrator, originally known as "Raymond." This role was primarily played by Raymond Edward Johnson until 1945, and then by Paul McGrath until the show concluded. The host's droll humor and ghoulish puns set a unique, tongue-in-cheek tone that distinguished it from other thriller anthologies.
• Format and Stories: Each episode typically presented a standalone mystery or horror story, often involving murder, ghosts, or psychological thrillers. While the show sometimes dabbled in the supernatural, it often resolved seemingly otherworldly events with a rational explanation. The stories were generally tight thrillers that managed to balance frights with the host's humorous interjections.
• Guest Stars: "Inner Sanctum Mystery" featured a range of talented radio actors and occasional guest appearances by Hollywood stars. Notable actors who appeared on the show included Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Agnes Moorehead, Richard Widmark, and Mary Astor.
• Producer: The show was created and produced by Himan Brown, a prolific figure in radio drama. Brown later recycled the famous creaking door sound for his 1970s series, "The CBS Radio Mystery Theater."
• Legacy: "Inner Sanctum Mystery" was highly successful and has had a lasting impact on the horror genre. It was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1988. Its influence can be seen in later horror hosts and anthology series.
• Episodes: A total of 526 episodes were broadcast. While many of the original recordings are thought to be lost, a significant number still exist and are enjoyed by old-time radio enthusiasts today.
