In this episode, I flipped the script my Sister Friend E. Monique Evans who answered “What’s the T?”.  Instead of my normal Q&A style, I tossed out topics and Monique weighed in. We talked Dating to the Pride Umbrella to Privilege and brought it back to “Women of Color” fashion with the importance of using our voices, specifically Trans WOC + Wealth. Could not leave this out especially with Monique being in Banking. What's the T? Check out the episode for the full scoop. BTW, it’s a long one so pause then play if you must.

Living in Spain

How Bianca embraced the move

Sometimes we blame our parents for things then realize we have the power to change.

Bianca:  “When we finally had the chance to move to Spain, I was like, wow, this is a chance for my kids to learn Spanish. And I remember someone saying to me one time, I think sometimes we blame our parents, like my mother didn't teach me Spanish. And he said, but you're old enough to learn on your own. I'm going to take a chance I'm going to have Spanish friends, I'm going to take Spanish lessons.”

Owning that you can change, opens us up to new; new experiences, new languages, newfound power. As women of color, we should embrace “new”.

Creative Entrepreneurship

How Bianca started her business

Black women are the fastest growing demographic of entrepreneurs in the U.S. Although Bianca is not in he U.S., she is a Black woman entrepreneur and shares how this came to be.

Bianca: “Because we move so often, that's the reason I started my business.  I started doing bookkeeping for Etsy shops. Then a military spouse said let's think about becoming a VA. I went from being a virtual assistant solopreneur to now having a team of five and own a financial marketing agency”

Just like with everything else, being a Black woman, woman of color, entrepreneur comes with issues. There is, however, support.

“Raising Kids”

How Bianca raises her children to use their voices

There’s power in using your voice as Bianca’s children learned.

Bianca: “I raised my kids to have a voice and to speak up. They are the only African American kids at their school so sometimes saying things like “so we can celebrate Chinese New Year but not Black History Month” leads to“diversity training”.

Knowing that what you have to say is of value, trusting your own outrage, refusing to be silenced are just three ways we as women of color can use your voices.

Memorable Quotes from Bianca

f you take the time to understand their culture, I understand their language, they will open up to you.”

Know who you are, that you have more power, know what you stand for.”

“Take this year to be still. Take time for you. Cut out all the noise.”

About Bianca

Bianca is a military spouse stationed in Spain with her husband of 18 years and has 2 teenagers at home and one child in college.

She is an Air Force Veteran, obsessed with cafe con leche, loves to read historical fiction, travel, and values time with family and friends.

Bianca has an MBA in Accounting and combined that with her love of marketing to start her own financial marketing agency: Simplified Marketing Services. She helps financial professionals simplify their content marketing. Her team consists of women from all over the world.

Bianca is from Jersey and comes from a single-mother household and has 8 brothers and sisters.

Growing up as a WOC she still often feels to explain why she is Puerto Rican but doesn’t speak Spanish. Well, a bit now that she lives in Spain. People asking “what are you?” when it comes to her skin tone and curly hair. She’s proud to be Puerto Rican and Black and living in Spain, especially with children has been an interesting journey but one that she is proud to be on.

Do You Happen to Know

What happens after the I love you

So many get caught up in the I Love You’s and don’t think beyond this. In her writings, Olivia goes beyond this to reflect on what happens after.

Olivia:  “I'm celebrating 33 years of marriage and we're still really good friends. I had to start looking at my relationship as this is my best friend. And when you think about getting past the I love you, it is difficult sometimes you have to continue to love somebody, especially after they disappoint you.

A healthy relationship needs commitment and willingness to be accommodating to each other's needs. Similarly we need to have the same commitment and willingness with ourselves to grow as empowered women of color.

What is your Dream Deferred

My writing life is my dream deferred

A Dream Deferred is a dream delayed.

Olivia: “My writing life is my dream deferred. I started out in the 80s as a journalist, and I wanted to do television news. But in the 80s, they didn't have, you know, people on the news that look like me.  So I did radio news and print news… In 2012, I left teaching, and I came home and my husband was like, Well, you've been teaching people to write for so long. Why don't you write? And so I wrote a little short story and self published it.

I ask about dreams deferred of all my guest paying homage to my late sister, author and poet Soltreu who wrote a novel entitled Dreams Deferred.

Who is in control of our happiness

You are in control of your own happiness

So often we look externally to be happy. We think a new car, house or person will give us what only we can.

Olivia: “The story can have a happily ever after. But it's up to you to be happy. Get on there and enjoy your life.

It is up to us to be happy. It is up to us to own our voices and power.

Memorable Quotes from  Olivia

Maybe I'm limiting myself in allowing love to find me by having this preconceived notion of how it should be packaged.

“Are you still trying to be the woman in charge? Or are you trying to be the best woman you could be in support of this relationship?

You are the captain of your own happiness ship.”

How to Take Control of Your Life

In career transition

Dr. Carol pivoted several times in her life and at age 50, decided to make the leap into entrepreneurship.

Dr. Carol Parker Walsh:  “I decided to launch my own practice, at the precipice of my 50th birthday after going through a divorce and actually a near fatal car accident and decided that I really wanted to work with women and helping them to fearlessly take control of their life and careers, particularly women at midlife.”

How to Love the Life you Live Live the Life you Love

Live unapologetically

We can unapologetically live life on our terms and do the meaningful work we love.

Dr. Carol Parker Walsh: “The first step is to really understand recognize and embrace the talents and skills that you bring forth. We tend to as women, undermine ourselves and underestimate our talents.”

Creating more love by first loving yourself. Giving more by volunteering. Getting to know your community getting involved are just a few ways to have impact.

How to Let People Know About You

Brand strategy examples

What is a Personal Brand? Harvard Business Review defines a Personal Brand as “how you want people to see you".

Dr. Carol Parker Walsh: “It's how are you showing up in the digital space? What does your LinkedIn profile look like? Are you creating articles? are you creating thought leadership?  Are you putting your knowledge and value out there so people know that you're the one that could bring this to the table?”

Answering these questions and taking action will help you to create your Personal Brand.  Your Brand positions you as someone who adds value first to yourself and to others. It’s a way to  use your power and voice.

Memorable Quotes from Dr. Carol

“Step into owning and embracing who we are and our identity and stepping into the power and significance that we have to offer the world.

Start seeing that you do have something of value to contribute.”

That would not have happened had I not been involved.”

Advocate Health Care

How my personal experience led to my advocacy

Health disparities—inequities in the quality of health, health care and health outcomes experienced by groups based on social, racial, ethnic, economic and environmental characteristics—persist across the nation.

Donna R. Cryer, JD:  “I have been in the world of patient engagement for my entire career. And that was because I had a liver transplant between second first and second years of law school at Georgetown. I saw how many things could go wrong in healthcare as a never ending source for career opportunities, and ways to be an advocate.”

Advocating for one’s health is one way women of color can own their power and voices.  ADVOCACY is the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal : the act or process of advocating something.

Proud Moments

The impact you have on others

There’s a Facebook group “Because of Them” which highlights people of impact and their influence. Each of us can impact others.

Donna R. Cryer, JD: “When I see people who have worked for me, shine and excel. Several of my folks have have gone on to have wonderful impact in the US and internationally throughout health care in different aspects.”

Creating more love by first loving yourself. Giving more by volunteering. Getting to know your community getting involved are just a few ways to have impact.

Walk in Your Purpose

The privilege of walking in your purpose

"When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." -Audre Lorde

Donna R. Cryer, JD: “I think it is an incredible privilege to walk in your purpose. Having the Global Liver Institute, which has now become the largest patient advocacy organization, for liver health in the entire world, means that every day, I'm living my purpose.”

Sometimes fear keeps us from doing things. Whatever stirs your soul, do that. Embrace the privilege of your purpose and dare to be powerful!

Memorable Quotes from Donna

I claim it (recognitions) only to share it and to let my sisters know that it is possible.

Being able to use the platform I've created to better support people is really exciting to be able to do.”

“It's hard for me to think about dreams deferred because I change them, I adapt to them, wherever I am.”

“That’s the dream (28 years post liver transplant), every day is the dream.”

                               Control Money

The ABC’s of Finance

Educating business owners on becoming savior with their money is “near and dear to Valaise’s heart”.  She even built a business around doing this.

Valaise Smith:  “Tried and True is established to help entrepreneurs with the ABCs of Finance to simplify their accounting, budgeting and credit processes. So in the credit space, we help entrepreneurs build business credit, I say all the time, cash is king, and credit is queen, and you need both to win.

                              Managing Finances

The value of managing your finances

Managing your finances well allows you access. Access to more capital. Higher tax returns. Financial freedom. Generational wealth.

Valaise Smith: “We are laser focused on the ABCs of finance, the accounting, the budgeting, the bookkeeping, and the credit, because all of those three goals go hand in hand, you want to make sure that you're staying compliant with your tax filing, you want to make sure that you're maximizing your deductions getting, you know, paying the least amount of tax possible, you want to make sure that your budget is tight, and that your bookkeeping system is in place, so that when you do go to get funding, you have the critical financial documents that they're asking for, you're up to date on your tax file once you have your financials, so you can give them the information that they need.”

                             Side Hustle to Main Hustle

The evolution of Tried & True Finances

Sometimes we fall into situations. This can happen in business as well.

Valaise Smith: So I had already been doing income tax preparation on the side, just as a little side hustle for friends and family because I wanted to learn more about taxes. So I went and took the Income Tax Course, that led into a part time seasonal job, I was doing that for a little while and then just was doing it for friends and family. I was not promoting it, it was not a business. I was doing it for love offering, just love doing it. And so I was I was working in corporate, I was working for this financial services company, and I was doing their back office reconciliation for a book of investment portfolio in excess of a billion dollars. And so when they went out of business, and I couldn't see myself rushing, going out to get another job brushing up my resume to go out and get another job I didn't. I launched try to true financial services.

Memorable Quotes from Valaise

“We're on our way to wealth.”

“We're not defaulting, we're running profitable, multimillion dollar companies.

“When we're more proactive, we can go so much further and let our voices be heard.”

We're world changers. Tried and True Financial services is here to move forward with the gifts and talents that we have on the inside of us so that we can impact the world.”

Service to Others

Naketa’s career was in serving people. After experiencing burnout being an employee, she turned her expertise and passion into a business that she controlled.

Naketa Ren Thigpen: “My background and foundation is as a licensed clinical social worker, trauma specialist, psychotherapist, sexologist and Relationship Expert.

Our company is a personal development company and we serve power couples and potent humans. Our potent humans are phenomenal visionaries, women entrepreneurs. We’re helping them have some intentionally selfish focus time on themselves.”

SelfCare, putting you 1st is not selfish. It’s necessary in elevating our voices as women of color and in living dream lifestyles.

People Helping People

So many of our paths involve helping others. Naketa talks more about this and how she empowers her clients.

Naketa Ren Thigpen: “My secret is helping people balanced boldly which its also the name of our podcast. I help people recalibrate and own their right to be intentionally selfish. We’ve redefined the word selfish so you can reclaim your power and not be stuck in what we'll say is conventional wisdom or the patriarchy, which told us that being selfish choosing yourself first taking care of what you need to make sure that your reservoir your vessel is sealed.”

Use the revealed secret in balanced boldly by owning your life, using your voice, tapping into your power.

Work Life Integration

Is it Work Life Balance? Work Life Integration? OR, something else?

Naketa Ren Thigpen: “I say work life and love balance.  Because love is my yummy my yummy space. There's no 50/50 relationship. There will never be any space where it will be even at all times. I define balance as your truth over your boundaries.

Set up some boundaries so you don't get distracted from your truth. So that way you stay full enough for you first because that's important for the legacy you're creating the philanthropy you want to do the all the altruistic things that you're doing in the world.”

Put your mask on 1st as they say when flying. You are you #1 priority.

Mirror Talk

Mirror Talk is where you choose a statement or an affirmation, face yourself in the mirror and repeat the statement, like a mantra. This allows you to look yourself in the eyes while stating positive messages.

Naketa Ren Thigpen:  “Get a mirror and look at yourself.   Look in your eyes and look at your skin and  say something like whatever your name is, I love you. You are worthy of every good thing. I forgive you. I release you from the secrets from the shame from the guilt, the frustration and the rage. I release you and I love you more than life itself..”

Some of us avoid looking at ourselves for whatever reason(s). Let today be the day you shift . Look yourself in the eyes and love on you.

Memorable Quotes from Naketa

Being intentionally selfish is gifting yourself.

“Have some intentionally selfish focus time.”

Amplify intimacy in all the ways.”

“Don’t be anchored to an expired expectation that's weighing you down and keeping you from inviting boundless expansion in.”

                                         Elevating Life

Women Helping Women

Why is it important to impact the lives of other women of color? Betty shares her vision of why she started Women Elevating Women (W.E.W.).

Betty Hines: “It was a vision that I had several years ago after over 20 years working with women who are entrepreneurs and executives. I saw some characteristics that we were lacking. I had a powwow with my family advisors, my son and my daughter, and they said, you know, women elevating women because I wanted to continue to elevate women. I didn’t want them to make the same missteps I made.”

Elevating other women of color is critical in our collective growth and how we empower one another.

Life has a funny way of making the unexpected happen. Betty and I met IRL for the 1st time at the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit.  #BEWPS is a national conference celebrating Black women.

Women’s Organizations

Women Presidents Organization. Betty is a WPO Platinum III Chair and recently elected to the Board ofDirectors. www.women-presidents.com.

They have 138 Chapters around the world and aggregate revenues are $23B+

Women Elevating Women ( W.E.W.) Betty’s organization is 5 years young. They provide resources, opportunities, access to capital and information to women who are making six figures and want to scale to $1M.

We are the exclusive feeder into this group. Visit   www.wewcrew.com.

Collaborative Communication

What is Collaborative Pathways and who does it serve? Betty answers this.

Betty Hines: “Collaborative Pathways is  our conference. We have five pillars and each time we do a conference we take one of our pillars. Collaboration is one of our pillars which was the focus of our domestic conference in the DC area.  We allowed the women to all get together along with our sponsors, JP Morgan Chase, and other key sponsors. They had a chance to interact, tell their experiences, tell their stories, and also make their ask. I'm a firm believer that in order for you to have a pathway to scale, you're not going to do it by yourself and you need to do one of those pillars.”

Betty is a true believer in supporting women and bringing others along to help.

Effectively Communicate

Betty talks about four of the 5 pillars or her 5 C’s to Success; Communicate, Connect, Courage, Cultivate, and Collaborate and their importance and impact.

Betty Hines:  “Your network is your net worth is part of our Connected pillar. And another area that I find that is needed is the communicate pillar. The Communicate pillar really falls in the area of branding, and people. We stay away from the personal branding. And it's important to have the personal branding that identifies who you are and what your business is about. Align your business values with that personal brand. And you want people to be able to tell that story.”

Helpful Tip: “I tell women to spend that extra nickel to get a business email. Mine is betty@bettyhines.com.”

Courage to take care of your health and your wealth. During COVID,  women entrepreneurs and executives had kids at home, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner when normally someone else did that and also support and cleaning. They found themselves doing all of that. You’re stuck in there for a while pulling out your hair.  So it was important that we we take care of our health and then the wealth so you need to leave that legacy.

And we believe that Cultivate color is about reaching back to the youth.”

Being an elevated or empowered woman requires action. Giving back or paying it forward it always a key component to elevating life.

What is a MOU and EFP?

In this episode, Betty talks about MOU and EFP.  Definitions below.

MOU=A memorandum of understanding is an agreement between two or more parties outlined in a formal document. It is not legally binding but signals the willingness of the parties to move forward with a contract.

EFP=Executive financial planning helps coordinate your financial life across varying levels of wealth and financial complexity.

Memorable Quotes from Betty

“I'm a firm believer that in order for you to have a pathway to scale, you're not going to do it by yourself.”

“Get outside your zip code.”

“I'm not that auntie that's gonna keep the sweet potato pie recipe to my grave.”

Celebrating Success

The Secret of Getting Ahead is Getting Started

So often we want to do a thing and are afraid. This was me in 2020. Once I called a thing a thing, I felt the fear and did it anyway.

Deneen L. Garrett: “So the secret of getting ahead is getting started. I was hesitant to get started. After my coach told me people were waiting to hear from me to hear my voice and then reading Brene Brown vulnerability. I NIKED it and launched an intimate conversation with women of color on Good Friday 2020 I felt the fear and did it anyway.”

You have to start in order to finish. Recognize what’s holding you back. Acknowledge it. Embrace it. Just do it!

Girls in STEM

Jannie and I met when she was the Director of TECHNOLOchicas. Learn more about Jannie’s commitment to Girls in STEM in our episode.

Ancestor Spirit

When you think of what the Ancestors may have dreamed of, Diamond Sade comes to mind.  She is not afraid to show up authentically for herself and others. Wet alked about this in her episode.

SEO

SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization. What this means is optimizing your site for search engines so that you can rank higher on Google, Bing, etc…

Deneen: I wanted more accurate data for where my podcast is going sponsorships etc. Danielle and I are working on Search Engine Optimization or SEO..”

Learning and about and leaning into SEO has been a game changer for me. Check out my Podcast Coaching Journey episodes for more.

How To Turn a Set Back Into a Set Up

Give Grace

Looking for new ways to tap into your power and voice? Tywanna shares her 1st tip of why we should give grace to ourselves.

Tywanna Smith: “The first thing I would say to any athlete, give yourself some grace. We have a lot of things going on, a lot of pressure, a lot of scrutiny for these individuals, when we put them on pedestals. And that can be heavy, if you think of the human experience. So give yourself a little grace, you don't have to be perfect.

Life is heavy. Giving ourselves grace, making time for self care, and being present will benefit us as we navigate spaces as Women of Color.

Setup or Set up

How do you handle a setback? Tywanna talks about her experience after tearing her ACL in high school. While she experienced an unfortunate situation, Tywanna says this is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

Tywanna Smith: “It was actually one of the best experiences to happen to me. The reason I say it was a good experience was because it taught me to rely on something other than sports.  I was blessed to have a cousin who played in the NBA. And so it allowed me time to connect with him. He helped me rehab my knee, and I was able to get a firsthand view of what it was like behind the scenes for a pro athlete. I fell in love with that. And I knew that's what I wanted to do. So I never would have gotten that experience, learned that about myself., had I not taken time away from the game.

Sometimes the universe is trying to tell us something. Those roadblocks in our way are often to redirect us. Tywanna experienced such a moment.  Think about your “ACL tear” experience. Was it a setback or a setup or set up

Importance of Mentorship

Tywanna suggests getting a mentor. Connect with people you can learn from and in immersive ways.

Abundant Blessings

While COVID was a devastating time for millions, it was a Blessing for Tywanna. She shares her Dreams Deferred moment.

Tywanna Smith:  I would say the start of COVID. I had so many opportunities come to me at once. From working with the NFL, being, you know, brought on to work with an NFL team to work with an NBA team to do some work with the NCAA in addition to managing my clients. And as I mentioned earlier, I'm a mother.  While those were a lot of great opportunities coming at me, it was overwhelming. So COVID happens, the world shuts down. Honestly, in the beginning, I'm relieved, because I'm thinking, you know, I'm so exhausted. I had a book that I was preparing to release that I did not release, because the world looked very differently then. And that was the dreams deferred moment with me, right, but deferred, not denied. And so I'm grateful to now be able to say that I've released my book, I've launched it. So I'm very grateful for that. And I just attribute that to being faithful to understand that there is no such thing as a missed opportunity or a missed dream. Everything happens in its perfect timing. And if you're patient enough, when that thing comes back around, you should be ready to walk through the door.

What devastated so many families was Abundant Blessings for Tywanna.

Purchase a copy of Tywanna’s book, “Plan TOO: Guiding Your Athlete to Wealth & the Best Mental Health: Guiding Your Athlete to Wealth & the Best Mental Health” here.

Memorable Quotes from Tywanna

“Give yourself grace.”

You are, who you are, and not what you do.”

“Figure out who you are without a ball in your hand.”

“The offseason is the best season that you will ever play, right, because you get an opportunity to pour time into other areas of your life that you don't normally get to during the season.”

There is no such thing as a missed opportunity or a missed dream. Everything happens in its perfect timing. And if you're patient enough, when that thing comes back around, you should be ready to walk through the door.”

As my podcast coaching journey continues, I had the pleasure of hosting my 1st virtual podcast panel. Yes, as a direct result of working with my podcast coach who recommended me for the opportunity.

Shoutout to PodBean for honoring this time with the Celebrating Black Voices panel. I was joined by Rock Stars Danielle Desir Corbett, my podcast coach, Jazz Williams, who is from The D as I am, and Reg Howard.  My Podcast Coaching Journey - Podcasting Tips from Black Podcasters.  We shared podcasting tips such as:

Kimberly Batchelor Davis has been in love with books since she was a child. She fervently believes that “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7.) It reminds us to continue to put our faith in God instead of ourselves.  Kimberly realized that something was missing from her life; it was writing. She says: “I had to have a purpose and it wasn’t just about making money, I had to give back in some way—I just didn’t know how.” Since then, she has not looked back. She lives by this in creating stories that have shared experiences and which inspire or cause people to think about situations in a different way.

Recently, she released two children’s books “Rose and the Enchanted Seven” and “Look, Daddy! There’s a Bunny. Kimberly released “Escape to Paradise: Books 1, 2, and 3”, the exciting, fictional romantic trilogy book series. Presently, she is the host of the Kim B. Davis Show which is featured on YouTube.com, Apple, Spotify, Google, Stitcher and she is the Lifestyle Editor for the Michael Van Tull Show and Community Highlights with Missionary Hattie Humphrey on the Detroit Praise Network and BlogTalk Radio. Kimberly has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in creative writing from Central Michigan University.

41:37

Ryane LeCesneCEO | Mindset + Energy Management Coach, and I talked about things women, high-achieving Black women, need to be in recovery from in order to “have it”: Imposter Syndrome, Perfectionism, Distractionism.  We talked about how shame shows up and its impact. Check out this week’s episode for more.

This week’s guest is…

Ryane LeCesne is the Master Your Mindset Coach. Since 2012, Ryane has coached nearly 1,000 high-achieving women – specializing in the unique needs of high-achieving Black women – to advance their professional dreams by overcoming and healing from the self-limiting mindsets of Impostor Syndrome and Perfectionism.

Ryane understands how frustrating it is to have followed the "blueprint to success" only to feel like you secretly lack the 3Cs – clarity, confidence, and courage – to advance your career or build your dream business on your terms. She knows what it feels like to have done "everything right" and still feel stuck and trapped second-guessing yourself and your dreams. She also knows the mindset required to take big, bold action in the face of your fears.

Her coaching process is evidence-based, holistic, transformational, and proven to be instrumental in helping high-achieving women professionally advance. When Ryane’s not coaching or with her nose in a personal development+leadership+spiritual book, she is the wife of a very loving and supportive super-guy and mommy to a very special love bug. She’s a proud member of The Links, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a graduate of Spelman College and Georgetown University.

I AM my hair. My hair IS me!- Embracing Your Natural Hair with Naomi Samuel
45:05

In this world, for women of color and Black women, we are faced with so much. Was that a micro-aggression? Did you mean harm when you complimented me? What did you intend by singling me out? Naomi Samuel, a Management PhD Student at the University of Texas at Arlington who id passionate about storytelling, raising awareness of natural hair discrimination, helping students discover their personal narratives, and writing theory to develop DE&I thought leadership, and I delve into these and other questions as we discuss our journeys as Black women. I AM my hair. My hair IS me!- Embracing Your Natural Hair.  Check out this week’s episode for more.

This week’s Guest is Naomi Samuel.

Naomi Samuel is a Dallas native, born and raised in Garland, Texas, but considers Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to be her second home. Or really, where her heart resides. She’s currently a Management PhD Student at The University of Texas at Arlington. Before this, she worked in management consulting after graduating from Southern Methodist University in 2019 with degrees in Marketing & English.

She’s been advocating for diversity and writing poetry since she was a child. As an interdisciplinary graduate, she strongly believes that at the intersect of multiple domains of knowledge, exists new forms of practice to make the world more equitable for historically disenfranchised groups.

She’s particularly interested in designing creative interventions to increase racial equity in the workplace. She’s been an outspoken advocate of ending natural hair discrimination via #TheCROWNAct; and is currently a fellow of The CROWN Campaign, an interdisciplinary, grassroots effort to advance federal policy prohibiting natural hair discrimination. She loves leading and holding space to have conversations around what innovation is necessary to make the world more inclusive and reduce group-based discrimination and harms.

Work Life Harmony with Tareka Wheeler, PMP
01:03:59

We’ve heard of Work Life Balance and recently Work Life Integration. Have you heard of Work Life Harmony? Tareka Wheeler, PMP, CEO, T. Wheeler Strategic Solutions, LLC, Career & Mindset Strategist, shares how like stocks, we are a “diversified investment” and must diversify how we expend our energy. When in mom mode, she’s 100% a mom. When working on a project, she’s all in. Work Life Harmony.  Check out this week’s episode to learn more and about Professional DNA.

Meet Tareka Wheeler, PMP

I am a Career & Mindset Strategist that teaches high-achieving professionals and small businesses owners how to discover their defined natural abilities to level up professionally, achieve high levels of success and rapidly ascend in their careers.

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, my career has focused primarily on developing health education programs, strategic communications, and project management. My love and talent for program and project management led me to relocating to Virginia in 2013, and that was the beginning of a new era for me.

In 2020, after several shifts and pivots in my professional journey, it dawned on me that my experiences over the past few years should be shared with others that are striving to level up and advance their careers. The questions I had to ask myself were - “What is it that helped me”? and “How did I excel, and successfully tackle challenges and barriers to ensure that I reached my goals?”. The answer… it was my defined natural ability. I was leveraging what I had inside of me as tools to get to where I wanted to be professionally. It was my Professional DNA!

In March 2021, I launched Professional DNA to create a space and community for every person looking to level up professionally, grow their business, improve their performance, or simply refocus their professional journey. The Professional DNA Podcast is a weekly conversation to educate, liberate, and empower you to discover your defined natural abilities so you can become your best unique self.

In July 2021, I launched the Discovery Masterclass to teach high-achieving professionals strategies for rapidly ascending in their careers in 90 days!

I have spent my career challenging assumptions and asking thought-provoking questions of myself and others. I believe that knowing your Professional DNA is a way to truly crack the code to being successful in your career. It can be a true game changer and serve as a catalyst for exponential personal and professional growth.

Embracing My Curly Hair with Amaly C. Homer
01:38:23
Ever have a conversation that could’ve lasted for hours? That’s how it was for me and this week’s guest, Amaly C. Homer, Afro-Latina, mama, wifey, friend, hija/daughter, artist, teacher, lover, friend, student of life on a curly hair journey and podcast host. Amaly and I had the typical #intimateconversaton and more. We talked “hair”, Black hair, Afro-Latina hair. Check out the episode to hear how important hair is to Women of Color and our identities. This week’s guest is Amaly C. Homer. Buenas! My name is Ámaly Homer, host of the Ondas Podcast                      My identity journey started when I traveled to this country from DR at the age of 9 without any of my immediate family, not even my mom. I arrived without a fear in the world – just the excitement of seeing snow for the first time kept all worries away. That, and the tremendous opportunities I knew were waiting for me. It wasn’t until I came to this country that started to really think about my identity. I have spent most of my educational and professional career in the U.S. - 20 years in corporate America and todavia counting! Through all those years, I have always remained connected to my Latino roots. It is my superpower. It empowers me to do good at work, at home, and in my community. I cannot recollect when I first heard the word Afro-Latina, but I would say that it became really relevant and important to me just a few years ago when I started to fully embrace my curly hair, my ondas. I have since learned that our own culture has and brings certain biases of race and skin tone. I come from a country of predominate African ancestry, where descriptors such as moreno, indio, negro, trigeño, were terms of endearment and, at one point, even passports included the option to identify with these terms. That needs to be further addressed and dismantled. So, let’s talk, and more importantly, listen to each other. Ever Evolving Latina w/ Dr. Melissa Salinas
34:10

Dr. Melissa Salinas, Psy.D. is ever evolving. We talked about how her 3rd grade self declared she’d be a psychologist and she is. However, God had other plans and she is so much more. She creates tables, teaches Latinas how to be their authentic selves through her practice as well as how to literally move through trauma with yoga. Check out this week’s episode as we discuss this and more.

This week’s Guest Melissa Salinas, Psy.D. is a Latina clinical psychologist who specializes in trauma and a 200-hour certified Kundalini Yoga teacher, who is also certified in Trauma Recovery Yoga. She owns a clinical psychology private practice, AMS Wellness, as well as a company Authentic Revival Movement, which specializes in retraining the body’s stress response and highlights the importance of self-care over the “Pull yourself up by the bootstraps and keep going,” mentality. Her personal goal is to lead people to finding their authentic voice and self in a world that teaches the very opposite. Melissa also is a clinical coordinator and supervisor of clinical services in a private junior high school through a non-for-profit organization.  In addition to her professional roles, she is a loving aunt, daughter, sister, and friend.

The Liberation of Self-Responsibility with Christine Cariño
41:26

Christine Cariño and I talked about what’s needed to live a life outside of the boxes we’ve been placed in. We talked about freeing yourself from what holds you back, so it was no surprise that the two women who have impacted Christine the most embodied this. Gabriela Silang, one of Christine’s ancestors, was a leader of a revolt in the Philippines and, Harriet Tubman, liberated her people.  Listen to this week’s episode to hear more about this and, to “reconnect + reclaim” = to thrive.

This week’s guest is Christine Cariño, a brand advocate, transformation catalyst who interweaves her transformation journey and training with her success and experience in corporate as a Talent Acquisition expert. She transitioned to become a transformation coach in service of making a deeper impact and contribution in creating a loving, inclusive, and equitable society. Christine earned her diploma in coaching from New York University.  Liberation is a Personal Responsibility - The Liberation of Self-Responsibility.  Check out the episode for more.

Because Because: It HAD to Exist with Arlan Hamilton
21:24

If you have an idea and ever wonder if you should keep going, take a cue from Arlan Hamilton and reflect: If 5 years down the road that thing you imagined did not exist and it bothers you and/or, if it did exist without you getting credit and you’re not okay, keep going. “It HAD to Exist!” Check out this episode for more.

It was such a pleasant surprise to meet Arlan IRL on Saturday, March 12th in Las Vegas at the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit. Arlan is a kind and giving person. She was there to celebrate her Mom’s birthday (who I met later) and stumbled into a sea of beautiful Black women which is #BEWPS. I was able to share how Arlan suggesting we use Zoom to record was a game changer for me. Not only is Zoom easier than what I was doing, it allows me to share a video on YouTube. Plus I manifested her. I was talking about her at Podcast Movement Evolutions the day before.

Meet Arlan

Arlan Hamilton is the Founder and Managing Partner of Backstage Capital, a venture capital firm dedicated to minimizing funding disparities in tech by investing in high-potential founders who are people of color, women, and/or LGBT. Started from scratch in 2015, Backstage has now raised more than $12 million and invested in more than 150 startup companies led by underestimated founders. In 2018, they launched a four-city accelerator program in Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, and London. Arlan has been featured on the cover of Fast Company magazine as the first Black woman non-celebrity to do so, and is the author of “It’s About Damn Time” and host of the weekly podcast “Your First Million”. Arlan and her mother, Mrs. Earline Butler-Sims, announced their scholarship program which kicked-off with scholarships for Black students at Oxford University and HBCU Dillard University.
