Episode Date
Deaths Per Kilowatt-Hour
33:38

In 2012 California shut down the San Onofre nuclear power plant after decades of anti-nuclear activism, leaving the state with only one remaining nuclear plant. This meant that California started producing more of its energy by burning fossil fuels. So was the closing of San Onofre a victory or a tragedy for the environment? The answer to this question hinges on another: how much danger is society willing to accept to fight climate change?

In this episode of VICE News reports, VICE News correspondent Keegan Hamilton visits San Onofre and meets one of the people helping to tear the plant down—a nuclear engineer who previously helped diffuse North America’s worst nuclear accident. Keegan also talks to an MIT professor who says that the Russian army’s weaponization of nuclear plants in Ukraine proves that nuclear power is too dangerous.

‘They’re Playing Games’: An Exclusive Interview with VP Kamala Harris
29:12

Last Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris agreed to a sit down interview with VICE News chief political correspondent Liz Landers.

But the day before they met, Republican Govs. Greg Abbott of Texas and Ron DeSantis of Florida sent a busload of migrants to VP Harris’ house and Martha’s Vineyard. ‘There were children, people being put on a bus or a plane who don't know where they're going or where they were being sent,’ said Harris. This week, VP Harris responds to the Republicans latest ‘political stunt’ and gives insight into what the Democrats are strategizing for in the upcoming election.

Undercover in Guyana
39:12

Last year, VICE News Correspondent Isobel Yeung went undercover to understand how international business deals were being brokered in Guyana.

This small country in South America has one of the fastest growing economies in the world right now. Newly discovered natural resources have attracted a lot of foreign investment from China and the U.S., placing Guyana in the middle of a tug-of war for soft power in the region.

Recently, infrastructure contracts -  roads, bridges, and a hydroelectric power plant - have been awarded to Chinese companies.

In this episode of VICE News Reports, Yeung digs into how business is done in Guyana and uncovers allegations of corruption that reach far into the country’s highest levels.

This episode was produced by Steph Brown and edited by Ashley Cleek and Stephanie Kariuki.  Special thanks to Belle Cushing, Daniel Vergara, Jika Gonzalez, Craig Thomson and Karishma Vyas.

Dating In A Warzone
24:53

Six months after Russia launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine, we check in with Katia, a Ukrainian woman who we first spoke with back in February. Like many Ukranians who stayed in the country, Katia has had to find ways to live life in the midst of chaos—which includes dating. Katia tells us about fostering a new relationship in a warzone, and we also check in with VICE News Correspondent Ben C. Solomon about how life and war in Ukraine have been developing.

The Rise of the Moors: ‘We Want Our Own Nation’
35:42

Moors in America believe that they – and many Black Americans – are descendents of the Moroccan Empire, which they claim once extended all the way from North Africa to North America. This would make Moors indigenous to an America that far predates the United States.

But beyond that shared credence, the movement is scattered. Some seek only to practice spiritual beliefs while others maintain that being a Moor means U.S. laws do not apply to them. A few even use their identity as Moors to justify violence, theft, and fraud. Vice News’ correspondent Alzo Slade takes us inside the different facets of the Moorish movement, to try and understand the alternate history they believe in, and why the current social and political landscape is making Moorish nationalism more appealing.

Roe Was Never Enough
45:17

After Roe v. Wade was overturned, many wondered what living in a post-Roe America would look like. But for a lot of Native people, Roe has never been a reality. Though the federal government is obligated to provide tribes with healthcare, decades-old restrictions on federal funding have severely limited the provision of abortion.

Organizations like Indigenous Women Rising have been advocating for reproductive rights and abortion in Native communities for years. VICE News Reports’ Adreanna Rodriguez takes a dive deep into how IWR is filling the gap left by the government’s long history of manipulating Native people's reproductive well being… and how Native people have specific needs when it comes to reproductive justice. Needs that are deeply holistic and embedded in their cultural history.

This episode was reported and produced by Adreanna Rodriguez in partnership with Type Investigations, where Adreanna is an Ida B. Wells Fellow. It was edited by Adizah Eghan, Noy Thrupkaew, Cassi Feldman, and Stephanie Kariuki, with research assistance from Paco Alvarez.

A Summer of Love
40:45

After a bad breakup, our producer Steph Brown was on a mission to reflect, recover and get back out there. And what better time to jump into the dating pool than right now? After all, we all have been conditioned to believe in the romantic power of summer.

But there is a new problem that summer is facing. Doom and gloom is surrounding us… so how exactly do you date when everything feels like it's on fire?

This week, Steph Brown follows VICE host Taji Ameen as he tries to date in a changing world. Together they try something different to grapple with how we fall in love today.

This episode was reported and produced by Steph Brown and edited by Stephanie Kariuki. Special thanks Taji Ameen and to everyone who sent in a voice memo.

Still Waiting for JFK
38:34
Earlier this year, VICE News reporter David Gilbert took us behind the “JFK cult” headlines, and into the lives of those who were swept up by the QAnon offshoot movement that traveled to the fateful grassy knoll in downtown Dallas to witness one man’s prediction: the return of the assassinated president. This week we are revisiting this story with a few updates on those still in Dallas, awaiting JFK.

Violence against Election Workers
29:41

A Department of Justice task force — who has been reviewing threats of violence against election workers— announced their findings on Monday.

Earlier this year, VICE News’ Madeline May reported on how workers in Georgia were harassed and terrorized during the 2020 elections.

This week, we revisit Madeline’s investigation and give an update about how the U.S. is addressing the threat of violence as a form of protest in the lead up to the 2022 elections.

“These are our lands”: Maroons Fight Mining in Jamaica
32:46

Last year, Alzo Slade took us to Jamaica, where residents are fighting against mining in the most ecologically sensitive part of the island: Cockpit Country. The Maroons who live there, descendants of indigenous people and formerly enslaved Africans who joined together to fight British colonizers, say mining would destroy their way of life.

But this year, the government gave the go-ahead to start mining in Cockpit Country. And the Maroons have filed a lawsuit against the Jamaican government, trying not only to stop the mining, but also to finally get recognition of their sovereignty. This week, we’re re-airing last year’s episode with an update about the latest court battle.

This episode was produced by Jen Kinney. Special thanks to Eric Weinrib, Andrea Davis and Patricio Matos who produced and reported a version of this story for VICE News. You can watch their film at Vice.com, or on Youtube.

How the Hell Do You Make Friends?
39:54

Last year, our producer Sam Eagan set out on a journey to find his circle of friends and he recorded the entire process – from the highs, to the lows, and everything in between. This week, we revisit the episode where Sam and fellow producer Sophie Kazis answer the question that many of us fail to think about until we reach adulthood: How the hell do you make friends as a grown-up? Stick around as we check back in with Sam to see how his friendships changed once the episode aired.

The Fall of Sri Lanka's Most Powerful Family
17:39

On Wednesday morning, Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country. This came after months of protesters filling the streets with chants and tents, ending in a storming of the Presidential residence over the weekend. The protests are a direct result of the economic crisis that Sri Lanka has been experiencing — but who are the Rajapaksas, and why are they being blamed for this crisis? VICE News’ Pallavi Pundir takes us through what led to this moment.

Young Thug and Gunna on Trial
31:27

At the beginning of May, musical artists Young Thug and Gunna along with 26 others were arrested and indicted in Atlanta, Georgia. The core of the indictment accuses them of violating the state’s RICO act and alleges that Young Thug’s label, Young Stoner Life Records, is actually a cover for an Atlanta street gang. Entertainment and culture reporter Jewel Wicker takes us through the 56-count indictment, the prosecution’s use of lyrics and social media, and what this all means for the hip hop capital of Atlanta, Georgia.

Is Globalization Good for Afrobeats?
30:01

Afrobeats artists like Burna Boy and Tems are all over the top charts right now, but this style of West African music is nothing new. Today on VICE News Reports, we’re talking about Afrobeats, and how the genre has expanded to western audiences. Vice World News’ Dipo Faloyin shares what to make of this newfound attention.

This episode was produced by Adreanna Rodriguez and Stephanie Kariuki. Dipo’s book, Africa Is Not a Country, is out now in the United Kingdom and will be out in the United States this September. Social Media is Fueling Violence Against the Press
37:43

Earlier this year, a sharp spike in killings of Mexican journalists captured headlines worldwide. One of those killed was Margarito Martinez — a longtime photojournalist who was murdered in his hometown, Tijuana. Margaritos’s death shocked his colleagues, and as they demanded justice, many pointed to a relatively new source of danger for journalists in Mexico: anonymous Facebook groups.

This episode was produced by Adriana Tapia. Special thanks to David Mora, Ani Ucar, and Gabriela Martinez, who originally reported this story for Vice News Tonight.

This story was made in collaboration with our colleagues at El Hilo, VICE News and Radio Ambulante’s weekly Spanish-language news show  — you can find their version of this story, in Spanish, wherever you get your podcasts.

Getting More Guns in Florida Schools
38:32

In the aftermath of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, some are calling for stronger gun control laws, while others are calling for more guns on campus. So for the next week, we bring you a three-part-series from our archives that delves into what having more guns on school campuses looks like.

ARMED PART 3: The Guardians – After the mass shooting at Parkland, a new law required that every school in the state of Florida had to have someone armed on campus at all times. The cheapest way to fill that requirement? For schools to let their teachers or other staff carry a gun. We take you to two schools — one that embraces arming staff as the only solution, and one that resists arming staff, only to find themselves boxed into a corner.

Reported and produced by Jen Kinney.

If she passes, Angie will be able to carry a gun in her classroom.

So for the next week, we bring you a three-part-series from our archives that delves into what having more guns on campuses looks like.

ARMED PART 1: Soft Targets – For the past two years producer Jen Kinney has been looking into the movement to arm teachers in schools -- and what it means for students, teachers, staff and parents when teachers start to carry guns in the classroom. This is the first part of a three part series, part one follows student Cooper Caffrey, who was shot by a classmate in eighth grade -- then, a few years later, his Ohio school decides to arm its teachers. On the heels of the prisoner exchange that released former marine Trevor Reed, the US government is accelerating the process to bring Brittney home.

Inside Russia’s Notorious Mercenary Group
35:46

In the wake of the Ukrainian War, a private military company called the Wagner group has come into the spotlight. A wave of early reporting alleged that Wagner contractors were part of a hit squad tasked with taking out President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But Wagner, which has close ties to Vladmir Putin and his allies, has been covertly spreading Russian influence by serving in proxy wars for years now. VICE News’ Julia Steers takes us inside the notorious private military company that technically doesn’t even exist as she gained unprecedented access to Wagner’s leaders in their most successful mission to date, the Central African Republic.

Eleven year-old Kai Shappley has had a tough time just being a kid. Her whole life, the state of Texas, where she lives, has been policing what bathrooms she can use, what name she can go by—and a myriad of other basic personal freedoms afforded to kids who are not transgender, like Kai.

Last April, a new directive from Texas Governor Greg Abbott asserts that gender-affirming care provided to minors is tantamount to child abuse. And now Kai—and countless other trans kids in Texas—is in danger of being taken from her family.

For the past six years, VICE News correspondent Gianna Toboni has been spending time in Texas with Kai and her mother, Kimberly Shappley, documenting the family as they weave in and out of the state’s crosshairs.

This week’s episode was produced by Sam Greenspan and Steph Brown, in collaboration with Gianna Toboni, Nicole Bozorgmir, and Hendrik Hinzel.

27:37

Twenty-five year old Arkeuntrez Washington was recently released from federal prison for arms trafficking. VICE News’ Keegan Hamilton spends time with Washington, to figure out how he fits into the bigger picture of extremism and deradicalization, trying to answer the questions: What should happen to you if you’re fascinated by terrorists, curious about them to the point that you even reach out to them, but have never commited a single act of terror? Boys’ Love, Censored
28:55

One of the most popular shows in China was, Word of Honor, a supernatural martial arts epic that most fans watched not for the fighting, but for the heavily implied, homoerotic relationship between the two young, male leads. This is a boys’ love drama, a genre that has swept East Asia and managed to flourish even under China’s strict censorship against LGBT content. Somehow, for years, boys’ love skirted the censors.

But then, Word of Honor disappeared off the Chinese internet.

Reporter Viola Zhou takes us inside the often fantastic, super-romantic world of boy’s love dramas, and the political and cultural crackdown that’s threatening their existence.

South Africa v. Jacob Zuma
26:57

This month, South Africa’s former president Jacob Zuma may finally go to trial after decades of alleged corruption. For South Africans this trial is divisive. Zuma’s supporters say it's all a campaign to destroy the legacy of a great Black liberator. His critics maintain a conviction could indicate a new day for those seeking to curb corruption. The recent unrest this summer also looms in South Africa's mind, and so regardless of the outcome people worry could there be more violence?

VICE News Reports spoke to freelance journalist Ntshepeng Mtoma in Johannesburg, to explain what this case could mean for South Africa’s future. This episode was produced by Steph Brown.

The 25-Year-Old Who Negotiates with Boko Haram
37:11

Nigeria continues to grapple with a kidnapping crisis. Thousands have been abducted over the past decade, making kidnapping for ransom an underground economy. At the center of all of this is Ummi Kalthum, just 25 years old, who negotiates directly with Boko Haram, delivering ransoms for terrified families.

But paying ransom is deeply controversial, since it funds the same terrorists who are kidnapping in the first place. In this episode, correspondent Chika Oduah follows Ummi as she attempts to negotiate the release of hostages, while at the same time the Nigerian government considers a bill that would make her work illegal.

For more watch VICE News video reported and produced by Chika Oduah, Joe Hill and Roberto Daza.

My Cousin Baptized my Dead Relatives
40:43

Our host Arielle Duhaime-Ross recently learned that their cousin had been baptizing dead family members into the Mormon Church — and Arielle might be next. This controversial practice is called “baptism by proxy” or “baptism for the dead,” For people who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it’s a way to get dead family members who weren’t Mormon before their death into the Kingdom of Heaven. But Arielle, who is an atheist, doesn’t want admission into Mormon heaven -- so they contacted their cousin to talk it through.

The Fight for Jamaica’s Red Gold
37:40

Decades of mining has taken a toll on Jamaica’s land and people. Now, the government wants to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island: Cockpit Country. It’s the ancestral home of the Maroons, the descendants of indigenous people and formerly enslaved Africans who joined together to fight British colonizers. But the people who live in Cockpit Country are resisting.

Alzo Slade takes us to Cockpit Country, where residents say they will not allow mining on this sacred land.

“I knew I was being spied on”: The 9/11 Effect
36:48

This week marks twenty years since the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Two decades later, 9/11 is less of a day and more of an era -- an event that catalyzed countless effects, reverberating beyond the weeks, months and years that followed. For Muslim Americans that is perhaps distinctly true. After the attacks, religious, racial and ethnic profiling of these communities became so widespread that it fundamentally changed what it meant to be Muslim in America. On this episode, we hear directly from a Brooklyn native whose life dramatically changed, when as a teenager, he was surveilled by a unit of the New York City Police Department.

Inside A Mysterious Anti-Sex Trafficking Group
40:42

The anti-child sex trafficking group Operation Underground Railroad has become increasingly popular in the age of QAnon, and has been buoyed in part by President Trump. But not all of the stories OUR tells its donors hold up to scrutiny, and some of its so-called "missions" to save women and children from sex trafficking have been described by insiders as amateurish at best. Reporters Tim Marchman and Anna Merlan of VICE’s Motherboard go deep on their months-long investigation into this popular, shadowy group.

Bruce's Beach
47:12

In 1912, a Black couple named Charles and Willa Bruce bought a parcel of land in Manhattan Beach, CA and turned it into a successful seaside resort for Black Californians. Until they were driven out of town -- by white city officials who didn’t want Black neighbors. Now, a hundred years later, a new state law will allow for the return of the property to the Bruces' descendants. But the city of Manhattan Beach refuses to apologize for its actions. VICE producer Julia Nutter heads to Manhattan Beach to explore the tensions playing out right now in what may be a test case of land reparations for African Americans.

In Search of a Black Utopia

This past year our producer Adizah Eghan noticed an interesting trend on social media: everyone seemed to be living it up in Tulum, Mexico. Some were flocking there to have a good time, while others were seeking something much deeper: they wanted to escape racism and seek refuge with like-minded people. Adizah traveled to Mexico to experience the vibes of Tulum for herself -- and also dig into why Black people are seeking refuge in a small fishing town south of Cancun.

Over the past year, there have been numerous incidents of anti-Asian violence across the country. And after back-to-back videos of assaults on elderly people in the Bay Area went viral earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Dexter Thomas noticed a recurring theme — many comments on social media fixated on the fact that the attackers were Black. This is following a summer of protests against police brutality where many — including Asian Americans — showed solidarity with Black people on those same platforms. Here, Dexter digs into the legacy and current state of Black and Asian solidarity.

Fighting Bezos in Bessemer
46:01

In the final week of the most-watched union drive in recent history, we take you to an Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama. Workers here will vote this week on whether to form Amazon’s first-ever union in the US, which could deal a blow to one of the world’s richest men and challenge the future of work as we know it. We meet with one of the workers leading that fight.

UPDATE: After this episode was published, Amazon responded to several of our questions and requests for comment. In part they told us that the company ensures every associate has easy access to toilet facilities. In addition to expressing concerns in the online portal, Amazon says employees can also call Amazon Ethics hotline or contact their manager or any member of the HR team. They also told us "it’s our business objective to ensure long-term career development opportunities for our employees."

‘I Was Prepared to be Arrested’: Jan. 6, 2021 - Hong Kong
41:42

UPDATE: On February 28th, 2021, the young politician we profiled in this episode, Fergus Leung, and 46 other pro-Democracy activists and lawmakers were charged with “conspiracy to commit subversion,” a violation of Hong Kong’s new National Security Law. As of this update (March 3, 2021) they are all still incarcerated awaiting trial. If convicted, Leung faces a multiple-year prison sentence.

In a pre-dawn raid on January 6th, hundreds of Hong Kong police fanned out across the city in a coordinated operation to arrest dozens of pro-democracy activists and lawmakers in a single sweep. It was the biggest crackdown on the city’s democracy movement and the latest Chinese government effort to curb dissent.

We go to Hong Kong to spend time with one of the people rounded up -- a 23-year old local politician -- and hear from VICE correspondent Laurel Chor about what led up to that day. Is this the end of Hong Kong’s nascent democracy?

ARMED PART 3: The Guardians
45:41

After the mass shooting at Parkland, a new law required that every school in the state of Florida had to have someone armed on campus at all times. The cheapest way to fill that requirement? For schools to let their teachers or other staff carry a gun. We take you to two schools in neighboring districts in the first week of school in the midst of new COVID protocols — one that embraces arming staff as the only solution, and one that resists arming staff, only to find themselves boxed into a corner. This is the third episode of a three part series about arming teachers.

39:23

For the past two years, producer Jen Kinney has been looking into the movement to arm teachers in schools, and what it means for students, teachers, staff and parents when teachers start to carry guns in the classroom. Part 1 of this three-part series follows Cooper Caffrey, who was shot by a classmate in eighth grade. A few years later, his Ohio school decided to arm its teachers.
