• Spotify has announced that almost 600 people (6%) will be laid off. Daniel Ek announced in a memo that Chief Content Officer Dawn Ostroff is to leave the company; "Alex [Norström] will take on the responsibility for the content, advertising and licensing work going forward".
  
  
• The number of new podcasts has dramatically dropped by 80% in two years, according to data reported this week. Except… as we explore today in a deep-dive article, that data point doesn’t tell the whole story. In fact, podcasting is in a much better place.

• Spotify has reported its Q3/22 earnings. It has 456m monthly active users (up 20% y-on-y). Ad revenue, led by podcasting, is up 19% y-on-y and 7% q-on-q, at €385m (12.8% of the company’s total revenue). The company lost €228m in the quarter; they predict a loss of €300m in Q4 (but suggest they may also raise their prices, following Apple’s price hike).
  
  
• BBC Sounds, the corporation’s app for radio, music and podcasts, has posted a weekly average of 4.3m users, representing no growth from the previous quarter. 
  
  
• ABC’s Annual Report was published. The national broadcaster is seeing 33m downloads per month for its podcasts (p64), up 22% year-on-year. 
  
  
• PodcastOne, which closed an $8.1m funding round in July, has posted a number of increased metrics for podcasts in its slate. (Interview next week)
  
  
• Spotify has complained about anti-competitive behaviour from Apple, after Apple “forced” Spotify into what they consider a sub-optimal purchase flow for audiobooks. Apple requires a 30% cut from any in-app purchase.

It quotes a number of podcasts who charge more than $30,000 per interview… and they only added a full disclosure (an FTC requirement) after being contacted by Bloomberg for the story.
  
  
• Dan Misener and Jonas Woost launched Bumper, a new podcast growth agency. Bumper will work with organisations on audience development strategies, marketing and promotion.
  
  
• How many downloads get you into the Apple Podcasts charts? Tanner Campbell managed to get into the top 100 in the US Books category last Friday with just 10 listens and 24 followers.

• The number of open video podcasts are on the rise. In November last year, Podcast Index listed 39,194 video podcasts. As of June this year, Podnews can reveal the number had grown by over a quarter to 50,863. • Gumball has raised $10 million to expand its podcasting host-read advertising platform. The company was built by the team behind the Headgum Podcast Network. 

NEWS: 

• Podcast host Acast is still spamming podcasters, even co-founders of rival podcast networks, or hosts of shows that ended three years ago. Libsyn's Rob Walch correctly notes "Friends don't send emails starting 'hello friend' (as Acast's do), and they don't spam". 
  
  
• Hypocritically, Acast actually offers its customers a tool to obfuscate your email address in your RSS feed, so that it will "help our podcasters avoid unwanted spam". It's a problem the company is more than aware of, then. "Email marketing is one part of our marketing strategy", said Ross Adams, the company's CEO, when we last asked.
  
  
• Oscar Merry has suggested Lightning Comments as a potential solution for cross-app commenting: using "boostagrams" as a method of sending comments. We like this idea; and the spec is simple enough for us to code it; so, you'll find a "comments" section on every update in Podnews's web version. You can also see those comments in the Fountain app.
  
  
• Podnews are also, as of today, permanently supporting the socialInteract tag for Twitter (and will probably pull in those comments to the page, too, at some stage).

• Spooler's "dynamic, real-time audio" publishing system launched last week. According to an analysis by John Spurlock, on its first day, Spooler helped The Refresh from Insider to produce five editions of their podcast.

SiriusXM is being sued for failing to provide podcast transcripts for deaf users by the National Association for the Deaf and the Disability Rights Advocates.  

• As we researched in June 2020, transcripts can offer significant SEO benefits.  
  
  
• The podcast:transcript tag is an open standard, supported by a number of podcasts and offers both static transcripts (in HTML or text) or real-time captions (in the SRT format). Widely supported by many modern podcast hosts including Captivate, Transistor, Buzzsprout, Omny Studio and others, a number of podcast apps display these transcripts, including the popular Android app Podcast Addict. 
  
  
• Amazon Music has a proprietary solution for transcripts.
  
  
• Spotify added the right to transcribe using their own proprietary solution in May 2020, and a limited beta in May 2021. There is no mechanism for publishers to supply their own transcripts.

  Spotify has pulled a number of comedy albums from its service, after claims they weren’t licensed correctly.  Jeff Price has announced a $3.5m investment round for his Word Collections company, which “focuses on getting comedians and other spoken-word performers paid for the use of their works for the first time”.

• The Infinite Dial 2021 for the UK was released last week. The headline was 41% of the UK population (16+) listens to podcasts every month - around 23m people. The data is directly comparable to the US (41%), Canada (38%) and Australia (36%). The data was paid-for by Bauer Media and Spotify.

• A Sky News investigation in the UK has discovered antisemitism, racism and white supremacist material in podcasts on Spotify.  Spotify has removed 150 hours of content after the news channel’s report. “In some cases, explicit slurs could be found in episode titles and descriptions while album artwork displayed imagery adopted by white supremacists,” the story says. • Apple Podcasts announced its Best of 2021. A Slight Change of Plans with Maya Shankar from Pushkin Industries was chosen as Best Show of the Year.
  
  
• The chart also gives us some understanding of the performance of Apple Podcasts Paid Subscriptions - Bad Blood: The Final Chapter is #1 in the list, and said in September that they had 6,000 subscribers. (That was $16,000 a month in revenue after Apple’s cut).

• Spotify expands Podcast Subscriptions globally and now includes 20 price points from $0.50 to $150 and a way for creators to download subscribers' contact info  —  Just a few months after launching support for podcast subscriptions to U.S. creators, Spotify today is making the service available to creators in global markets.
  
  
• There are now more than 1,000 channels in Apple Podcasts. Podnews has discovered 293 paid subscription channels so far.
  
  
• Audiobooks are coming to Spotify - the company is to acquire Findaway, an audiobook distributor. Findaway will “enable Spotify to quickly scale its audiobook catalog”. It’s experimented with audiobooks before: adding classic books, and a bespoke category for spoken word. (There are already more than 3,900 audiobooks on Spotify).
  
  
• Medium is getting into audio, acquiring audio-based learning platform Knowable. Warren Shaeffer, co-founder of Knowable, will join Medium as the Vice President of Audio. (Evan Williams, Medium’s CEO, was co-founder of Odeo, an early podcast company.)

• Apple Podcasts has brought back the 'refresh feed’ button. While Apple seem confident that new episodes and other changes in your podcast feed are now seen within 'a few hours’  On Friday, the Apple Podcasts Connect system was checking Podnews’s RSS feed every eight minutes.
  
  
• Podping - decentralised push notifications for podcasting, means that new episodes can appear in podcast apps within just 45 seconds. Part of Podcasting 2.0
  
  
• Google Podcasts uses WebSub; but users of Podping can also get automatic backwards compatibility with WebSub, thanks to John Spurlock.
  
  
• Cross-app comments are now testing in some podcast apps. The podcast:social tag will allow listeners to leave comments on a variety of platforms, some of which may be directly visible within podcast apps. Here is the proposed specification for more. 
  
  
• Castamatic 8 is the latest podcast app to include support for the Podcast Index and value4value. It features a “machine-learning auto-leveler”, a silent-skipper, and additional features.

Even though Anchor gave this podcaster early access, it took six days for his podcast's episode to be correctly available on Spotify, during which Anchor support didn't return his emails. 
  
  
• The BBC has launched BBC Podcasts Premium exclusively on the proprietary Apple Podcasts subscription system, and only in the US and Canada. The service will include "exclusive shows" (which are also available free in the UK). The BBC Podcasts Channel is available everywhere; the Premium bit only shows up in the US and Canada. All BBC shows are commercial-free in the UK; the corporation still blocks its shows from Google Podcasts. 
  
  
• Bradley Tirpak is the new CEO of Libsyn. A professional investor, he's been Chairman of Libsyn since August 2020, and a director since October 2019. The company had been without a CEO for over 14 months.

• At Podcast Movement, Mark Cuban and Falon Fatemi spoke about their new storytelling platform Fireside Chat. Cuban described podcasting as being “old, tired and beat up,” adding “…there’s only one way to monetize - by lying your ass off to secure sponsorships.” The app is available now on iOS.
  
  
• Edison Research’s Tom Webster said:
  "Cuban is right that podcasting isn’t an interactive platform. Podcasters don’t get immediate feedback in the way that participants on Fireside or Clubhouse do. Neither do actors or radio DJs or morticians. Nevertheless they persist. But that doesn’t make social audio platforms “podcasting 2.0.”

1.  Spotify’s podcast ad revenue has jumped 627% year-on-year, according to their revenue announcement.

2.  Apple has confirmed a download bug has been fixed in iOS 14.7.

3. There are now at least 1,000 paid shows in Apple Podcasts

• Just six weeks after the feature was publicly launched. We’ve discovered more than 500 different channels in Apple Podcasts and more than 30% of those channels are paid-for.
