Have you ever struggled with depression?

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I want to dive into the topic of depression and particularly the perfect storm of things that can happen inside someone's thoughts, brain, and body that can put them in a depressed state.

There has been a lot of discussion about depression in the last few weeks and this is such an important topic to learn about, especially from people who have experience with it.

Depression is actually the condition that led me to this profession. So, while I have struggled with it, I am also grateful for it because I probably wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t struggled with this condition.

I’m sharing my personal experience with depression as well as my professional experience with it. As someone who has been in one of those lowest of the low positions where you don’t want to go on, it was people speaking out about it and saying that they have experienced it too that got me through it.

Tune in to learn more about depression, the things that contribute to it, as well as some things that can help heal.

How The Epstein-Barr Virus Could Be Slowing Down Your Healing Journey and What To Do About It with Dr. Kinney
1647

Is the Epstein-Barr virus impacting your ability to heal?

Lately, I have been getting a lot of questions about this virus. This is something I talk about a lot in my day-to-day while working with my patients, so in this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I’m diving into the nitty gritty of what the Epstein-Barr virus is, what it looks like, what symptoms to watch for, how we test for it, and treatment options as well.

I work with a lot of hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue, and thyroid issues. A big part of being a naturopathic doctor is trying to get to the root cause of illnesses. After digging around,  I found that many of my patients had the Epstein-Barr virus in an active state.

The problem is, if your body is dealing with that, it’s not going to have any energy to fix your hormones, deal with the thyroid, or do anything else. If the body is really busy trying to get rid of something that shouldn't be living there, it's not going to have cellular energy to do a lot of other things.

That being said, it’s important to stay on top of this virus when it flares up. Tune in to learn more about what you need to know about the Epstein-Barr virus while on your healing journey.

95: What You Need To Know About SIBO with Dr. Kinney
935

Have you ever heard of SIBO?

SIBO stands for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, and I have seen a major increase in the number of patients who come in with this in the last year. It’s a condition where specific types of bacteria will overgrow in the small intestine. The typical type that we see the most causes a large amount of bloating.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I’m sharing what this condition is, the symptoms to watch for, and how to treat it. Stress is the number one cause of SIBO, so it’s so important to manage your stress. You might also find that you’re struggling with this condition if you are exercising too much.

Spending a lot of time in the parasympathetic state is the best way to improve this condition but there are some other ways as well. We have to work on the nervous system and digestive system at the same time to get to the root of the problem, address the terrain, and calm your nervous system down.

Tune in to learn more about SIBO and find out how to treat it so that you can start feeling better.

92: Why Nourishing Your Body With Whole Foods Is Crucial for Your Health & Well-Being with Morgan Mills
1043

Are you feeling stuck when it comes to your health journey?

A mistake that a lot of women make when it comes to their health is restricting their calories too much, which inevitably leads to overeating. I have spoken on this topic many times on the show because it is something I see so often with my patients.

Society tells women that this is the way to become healthy and in turn, women’s bodies start to fall apart due to not getting the proper nutrition. By eating healthy, nutritious foods, you’re going to lose weight, drastically improve your health, and feel amazing.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney show, I sat down with my right-hand sidekick, Morgan Mills. Morgan had a similar struggle with overexercising and binge eating but has since found a healthy balance and feels better than ever. In this episode, she shares her journey through it all and what she does now to help patients take control of their health.

Morgan is a Certified Holistic nutritionist and health coach with AFPA.  Lover of all things health and wellness, Morgan has spent the past 12 years studying and staying up to date in the health and wellness field, helping her gain the knowledge she is able to share with her clients today.

91: Treating Osteoporosis From a Naturopathic Point of View with Dr. Kinney
904

Unfortunately, a lot of people struggle with osteoporosis and osteopenia which means I get a lot of questions about them, so in this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I’m diving into the topic to tell you what you need to know about this disease from a naturopathic point of view and the connection between it and your gut health.

The first thing that you have to understand about osteoporosis is that the bones are living, breathing parts of our body that are constantly changing. Their main purpose is to store calcium, so if your body is not getting enough calcium from your diet or your gut, it’s going to pull it from your bones.

As we age, if we don’t have proper absorption of calcium in the stomach, osteoporosis or osteopenia can develop. So how do we fix it? There are a number of things we look at when it comes to treating this condition. We not only look at your calcium absorption levels, but we also look at multiple other factors that could affect your ability to absorb calcium.

The good news is that there are things you can do to treat osteoporosis. Granted, they do take a longer time to take effect. It can sometimes take as long as two years. That’s why it’s so important to be consistent with your treatment.

Remember, if you’re suffering from osteoporosis, your body is actually doing what it can to protect you. Tune in to learn more about what osteoporosis and osteopenia are, treatment options, tests you can take to monitor your bones, and parasympathetic activities that you can do to help on your healing journey.

88: A Female-Specific Approach to Healing with Bree Stedman
1431

Have you heard of a female-focused approach to healing?

It’s no secret that women see the world and react to the world differently than men do. We know it instinctively. That being said, doesn’t it make sense that women need a different approach to healing?

In today’s episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Bree Stedman to talk about how we can approach healing as women with our differences from men in mind for a much deeper, and more effective result.

Bree Stedman is a Transformational Women's Coach and the spokesperson and trainer for the Institute of Women International. She is passionate about redefining female empowerment by giving women the confidence to be seen and heard in business and in life through epigenetic, female-specific healing.

Many of us end up stuck in patterns because the things we are trying just aren’t working, but it doesn’t have to be that way. As women, we are innately different than men, so we need different approaches to healing emotionally and physically. Bree embraces that in her work and is passionate about working with women who are absolutely committed, ready, and determined to change.

1329

Are you ready to ditch diet culture and learn how to love your body?

There is a lot of toxic culture around the fitness industry and it can leave women feeling like their bodies are never good enough. We equate weight to health, which can harm our self-image.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Courtney McCarthy to talk about the importance of embracing your body, ditching diet culture, finding joy in movement, and so much more.

Courtney McCarthy is the CEO & Founder of Loyobo FIT, a virtual community dedicated to helping women to ditch diet culture, find joy in movement, and finally figure out how to love their bodies.

Courtney's own journey with health and struggles around body image/weight loss inspired her to become an ACE Certified Fitness Professional. Her mission is to prove that there is another way and to help women step out of the struggle and into self-love! She teaches women how to ditch diet culture, how to heal their relationship with food and movement, and how to take the stress out of self-care. 85: How Changing Your Mindset Can Change Your Health with Dr. Kinney
903

Are you aware of the power of a positive mindset?

This can influence so many things. Whether you are trying to lose weight, heal from a chronic condition, gain more energy, or any other change to your physical body—your mindset is the number one most important thing that you can change.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I am diving deeper into why your mindset matters so much when it comes to health and healing.

This is something that so many of my patients get stuck on. They end up in a negative thought loop that they just can’t get out of. Your brain doesn’t know the difference between what is happening in real life and what is just your thoughts. This means you can actually change your body by changing the way you think about things.

Positive vibes are a real thing! They actually do have a major impact on your body. This applies to the way that you talk to yourself and the way that others talk to you, whether that be a friend, coworker, family member, or spouse. Words are powerful.

You can still be in the reality of what is going on with your health while also focusing on the small wins and positive things that keep you in a positive mindset. When you stay in that energy, that’s when change can occur.

Tune in to learn more about how the law of attraction and a positive mindset can drastically improve your overall health.

80: How To Heal Your Postpartum Symptoms Through Physical Therapy with Kelsey Vagnoni
976

Many women face a lot of lingering issues after having a baby.

They face back pain, diastasis recti, pelvic floor issues, and so much more. Unfortunately, most don’t get the treatment they need because the medical focus usually shifts to the baby after birth.

In today’s episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Kelsey Vagnoni to talk about how physical therapy can make a huge difference for postpartum moms.

Kelsey Vagnoni earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy from the University of Delaware in 2007.  Since that time, she has taken over 400 hours of additional hands-on training to improve her manual therapy skills.  She spent 9 years in outpatient orthopedics as a spine and pelvic specialist before starting her own business.

She became a mother in 2015.  While she was recovering from a very traumatic birth, she realized physical therapy had a much-needed place in postpartum recovery.  Why is physical therapy routine for a sprained ankle but not after childbirth?

She started Personalized Physical Therapy in 2016 with a goal to provide high-quality, accessible care to mothers and change the way we think about physical therapy. The truth is, postpartum women don’t get the care they need to truly heal their bodies after all they go through.

79: Hydration: Why You Might Not Be Healing Without It with Dr. Dana Cohen
1433

Everyone knows that they need to drink water, but do you actually understand the importance of hydration?

When speaking of chronic disease, many doctors will emphasize the importance of nutrition. Nutrition is definitely a huge piece of the healing puzzle, but another, more overlooked piece is hydration. Hydration really needs to be your starting point before you go on any nutritional plan. The best part? It only takes one day to start seeing results. Whereas with nutrition, it takes weeks to start seeing the effects of your diet changes, you’ll know immediately what it’s like to feel better because you are hydrated.

In today’s episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Dr. Dana Cohen to talk about optimal hydration and why it should be the first treatment plan for any disease or illness.

Dr. Cohen has worked side by side with the late Dr. Robert Atkins, a true pioneer in the field of integrative medicine. Well respected by her peers and beloved by her patients, Dr. Cohen, most importantly, is a clinician. She is an internal medicine doctor who has spent her career focusing on integrative medicine. She has helped thousands of patients find relief from a variety of health problems utilizing the principles of integrative and functional medicine.

She practices with an emphasis on the individual, understanding that no two patients are alike. She focuses on nutrition and limits her patients’ reliance on prescription medications by using diet, lifestyle changes, and nutritional supplementation.

To heal chronic issues, you have to get back to the basics. Tune in to learn more about optimal hydration and how you can properly hydrate and start seeing immediate results.

Jo Dodd is a wife, mother, coach, and author of Children’s books who helps overwhelmed & depressed Mamas find their own sunshine & realize they’re not alone.

Self-care can look different for everyone. What you needed to do to take care of yourself in your twenties may be different from what you need in your forties. As women, we are constantly taking care of other people's needs, but it is so important for you to take care of your own needs first. Whether that means you start seeing a therapist, naturopathic doctor, acupuncturist, or whoever it may be, you must make it a priority.

It’s okay to say that you’re not okay. We have to end the stigma around depression.

Tune in to learn about natural things you can do when you are feeling depressed and more about why it’s okay to take medication if it means you will feel better.

76: The Connection Between Stealth Infections and Your Hormone Levels
1023

Have you ever wondered if your hormones are out of balance?

This is a really important topic and something that I talk a lot about with my patients. Many women come in and say that something is going on with their hormones. They may not know which hormones are out of whack, but they know it has to do with their hormones and they need help.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I am sharing everything you need to know about stealth infections and the endocrine system, a.k.a.- your hormones. Many times these imbalances are caused by a stealth infection that’s been slowly wreaking havoc on your body.

You don’t have to live with these symptoms. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t be afraid to ask your provider to go deeper. Get these tests done and get to the bottom of it so that you can finally start to heal. If you don’t feel like your provider supports you or understands, it’s okay to find a new one! Life is too short and your health is too important to let this slide.

Tune in to learn more about what infections could be causing a hormonal imbalance, what your doctor should be checking for, and so much more.

Are you familiar with the mind-body connection?

When your body is facing a lot of stressors, it can be easy to feel stuck. This is because your brain is trying to protect you so much that you can’t get out of a fight or flight response in order to heal, so sometimes it all comes down to getting your brain on board.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Ashleigh Di Lello, who has a remarkable story. She lived on the verge of death for 4 years and battled chronic pain before overcoming what everyone thought she couldn’t. She did this by using the power of the mind-body connection.

Ashleigh Di Lello is the founder & creator of Bio Emotional Healing®, a revolutionary method based in neuroscience that helps her clients around the world finally break free from chronic pain, limiting beliefs, behaviors, and emotions to thrive in their lives!

Despite being told by doctors she wouldn't live past her teenage years, she refused to give up and discovered the secret to rewiring the mind-body connection. She became an elite athlete, TV & Broadway star, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker.

In order to calm down and heal, your brain has to feel safe. It is biologically hardwired to resist change, so doing too much at once can easily overwhelm it. Taking small steps is key to rewiring your nervous system and subconscious mind.

Tune in to hear more about the process of rewiring your brain so that you can finally break out of that fight or flight response, calm your brain, and start your healing journey.

67: How to Listen to What Your Nervous System Is Trying to Tell You with Dr. Avigail Lev
1506

Do you listen to your body?

You may think you do, but sometimes the answer isn’t what you think. That feeling of intense anxiety you’re getting? It doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with your health, it could just be your sympathetic nervous system sending you a message.

Our sympathetic nervous system sends us into action. It’s what motivates us and drives us. So when you feel that racing heart or nervous energy, it’s important to slow down, take a step back, and try to figure out what your body is trying to tell you. Is there something you need to do or some action you need to take? Could it be excitement, motivation, or anticipation?

She is the director of the Bay Area CBT Center, a clinic that specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help individuals and couples break unhelpful patterns, develop healthier habits, and improve all areas of life.

She has co-authored three books on utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to strengthen relationships and has presented her research at numerous conferences. Do you feel like you have a pretty good balance in your life?

Sometimes, it can feel like we are on the hamster wheel of life just trying to get by. This is generally a good indicator that something is out of balance. We have to step off that hamster wheel and into the driver’s seat to find the positive momentum we sometimes desperately need.

That’s not to say it would be easy though. Growth requires us to be challenged and pushed beyond the boundaries of our comfort zone.

In this episode of The Dr. Kinney Show, I sat down with Emily Ransone to talk about how we can replace the busyness with more balance and achieve the type of growth we have been searching for.

Leading a 14-year career in corporate America, then owning two successful office furniture dealerships and two commercial real estate start-ups. But on the inside, she was deteriorating to the point where her body couldn’t produce a baby. She felt depleted, disillusioned, and full of despair.

Reinventing herself and her company through discovering the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS®) she was able to turn everything around and today leads a healthy business and life. Emily was able to tap into an innovative way of running her $50 million company so that she was able to reclaim control and free up her time to focus on what she really loves to do.

59: How to Ditch People Pleasing and Lean Into Self-Love with Paul Fishman
2021

Have you ever felt like you were living your life for someone else?

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that if you just do this one “thing”, other people will love you more. Many times, this pattern of people-pleasing can be extremely harmful to our physical and mental health.

Today’s guest on the Dr. Kinney Show, Paul Fishman, had the realization that most people are doing this, and their health was suffering for it. He made it his mission to teach self-love and show people how happy they can be if they are working to please themselves, not others.

Paul is the host of the top 100 podcast, The Road to Self Love, and creator of the Self Love "Diet", a 6-month transformative program that teaches you how to say yes to yourself, ditch the people-pleasing, and live the life you've always wanted.

His mission is simple, to empower and inspire a sense of belonging in each of us. Paul has been lauded for creating brave space, building a fiercely dedicated community, and helping thousands of humans love themselves unconditionally.

It’s a lot easier to point the finger at other people for your pain but sometimes you need to take a hard look at yourself to see what you really need to change. The key to becoming a healthier, happier you is to habitually nourish the devotion to your own individuality.

Make sure to tune in to hear all of the details!

58: Tips for Healing Your Pelvic Floor and Improving Your Overall Health with Julie Blamphin
1081

Did you know that the health of your pelvic floor can influence you physically, mentally, and emotionally?

Your pelvic floor is a collection of muscles at the base of your pelvic floor that is part of your foundational core. A lot of women are struggling with instability in these muscles without even realizing it. This can manifest as low back pain, stomach tension, constipation, diarrhea, or even leakage or incontinence.

Needless to say, your pelvic floor muscles are extremely important, and healing them can benefit you in more ways than one. We need to keep them happy, healthy, stable, and strong. In this episode, Julie Blamphin is back on the show to teach you how you can do just that!

Julie Blamphin has taught yoga since she was 12 years old. Now she empowers women to enjoy leak-free laughter and pain-free sex by stabilizing the core and pelvic floor. She is passionate about using movement and laughter to release the taboo around pelvic floor instability - which she believes is the key to rediscovering your sexy joyful self.

Unlike other Yoga Teachers, Julie combines physical yoga poses with a laughter practice and emotional connection. She values vulnerability, courage, positivity, and feeling sexy at every stage of life. Julie loves to laugh, dance, garden, travel, and speak Spanish. She's a Pittsburgh Steelers football fan and currently lives in Annapolis, Maryland USA.

The pelvic floor is our root chakra and sacred space for women. It is so important that we nourish and care for it so that we can find more balance in all aspects of our lives.

Tune in to hear how you can achieve more pelvic floor stability and improve your overall health using yoga.

57: How to Tailor Your Nutrition to How You Want to Feel with Sue Van Raes
1499

Did you know that you can choose how you feel by eating certain foods?

Many people don’t realize that the food you eat has a huge impact on not only your physical well-being but your emotional well-being as well. You can actually tailor your food to fit your needs and how you want to feel.

Understanding your body is the first step of this process. Just because a diet or fad produced amazing results for your friend, doesn’t mean it will work for you. Just like our personalities are all unique, our bodies and their needs are unique as well.

There is more that goes into health and nutrition than calories and hormones, and in this episode of the Dr. Kinney show, I sat down with Sue Van Raes to explain how you can start to understand your body and begin eating in a way that is right for you.

Sue Van Raes, M.S. Clinical Nutritionist, is the founder of Boulder Nutrition. Sue’s credentials are rooted in science, psychology, leadership, and life experience. Sue completed her master's degree in clinical nutrition and founded Boulder Nutrition in 2003, and has successfully merged a combination of functional nutrition and food psychology into her private practice.  Sue is a certified yoga instructor and passionate yogini.  She weaves yoga classes and yoga philosophy into some of her programs and retreats.

Sue specializes in women’s health and she aims to educate her clients on whole-body health and science-based nutrition, while also improving the overall relationship we have with food and our bodies.

Understanding that your nutrition has a big impact on your emotions can be a huge part of your healing journey. Sue and I really dug into the most important factors when it comes to your overall health and nutrition including stress, hormones, blood sugar levels, and the many ways you can improve your health with functional nutrition.

Make sure to tune in to hear all of the details!

56: The Connection Between Stress and Gut Health with Dr. Kinney
1254

Did you know that your stress levels have a serious impact on your gut health?

This has been coming up a lot in my clinical practice, so in this solo episode, I am explaining the correlation between the two and then I am giving you some tips to prevent the negative effects of stress on your gut!

I am breaking down all of the different ways that stress can affect digestion, lead to a leaky gut, cause diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and more.

To really understand how stress impacts the digestive system, I'm starting by describing what's supposed to happen in a normal human being who's not stressed in terms of the digestive tract. This is really important to understand for anyone - digestive issues or not.

If you think that your stress may be impacting the way your digestive system performs on a day-to-day basis, you aren’t going to want to miss this informative and helpful episode.

How much do you know about immune health?

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a lot more people have become interested in how they can increase their immunity. This has put a spotlight on glutathione therapy which is what my guest in today’s episode, Gian-Carlo Torres, is an expert in.

Gian-Carlo is joining me to chat about immune health and more specifically, how he became an expert in it!

Flashing forward, he is now an award-winning young entrepreneur and immune health expert who leads a team generating seven-digit yearly sales, which has helped more than 3,000 people boost their immune systems. Glutathione therapy was the only thing that got Gianco’s mother out of bed when she fell sick with lupus. These shocking results ignited him with a passion to help others, and he and his mother went on to team up as business partners!

He has spent the past four years working closely alongside doctors, scientists, and world-renowned health publications to study the powerful effects of glutathione. The empathy at the core of Gianco's story is what sets him apart. 27: How Yoga Can Help You Reestablish Harmony In Your Body with Elizabeth Scollan
1407

I don’t know if you know this about me, but I absolutely love yoga.

I find it to be incredibly beneficial emotionally and physically, and I know a lot of my patients feel the same way!

In this episode, I am joined by my favorite yoga teacher, Elizabeth Scollan, and we're having a fun chat about yoga, women's health, community, the importance of ceremony, and how this all ties into our overall wellbeing.

Liz Scollan stumbled into her first yoga class in 2006 as a means to relieve a stressful work life. She left that first class amazed at how much more integrated she felt in her body and the world, and she has been practicing ever since.

Elizabeth completed her 200-hour training in 2011 with Kim Manfredi at Charm City Yoga. She has continued to study yoga and many other movement and meditation modalities which she integrates into all of her classes. Her classes are challenging, creatively sequenced, and prepare you to work toward unique poses with the help of props and options along the way. She is currently working on her 300 Hour YTT through Yoga Medicine led by Tiffany Cruikshanks.

I love yoga for its health benefits, but I am most impressed with how well it helps not only myself but many other women feel strong, empowered, and at peace with their bodies.

This is an awesome conversation about the details and benefits of practicing yoga, and I think you will really enjoy it!
