Episode Date
Adam Hommey: A Patient’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:16:12

It’s a patient’s perspective on healthcare from Adam Hommey on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Adam is originally from southwestern Pennsylvania, which is where Rob lives, so they have a little dialogue about that area of the country to begin the interview. Adam now lives in Las Vegas Nevada. In the intro to this episode, Rob Oliver explains that health problems have kept him from publishing the podcast. He also shares the exciting news that the patient interviewing Marathon is officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest interviewing Marathon. That process has taken a while and it’s wonderful to have it formally recognized.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Adam Hommey shared a patient’s perspective on healthcare:

• Adam feels as though the professionals are conducting a fishing expedition to see if they can find other issues to treat and receive reimbursement for.

• Healthcare Heroes are the ones that listen to the patients and express empathy and concern.

• Quality healthcare needs to remove the litigation and the revenue driven model, according to Adam.

Georges Kanellopoulos: A Greek Primary Care Physician’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:20:00

It’s a Greek primary physician’s perspective on healthcare from Georges Kanellopoulos on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Georges works in both Greece and Ireland which gives a unique wrinkle to his insights. He is a member of Generation X.

Here are 3 things that stood out as George Kanellopoulos gave us a Greek primary care physician’s perspective on healthcare:

· Healthcare is not just a life science. It is about caring, giving, and healing.
· Healthcare practitioners must find the balance between being a scientist and being a human being.
· The Greek healthcare system cannot be described as a “system”, it’s not organized enough to be called systematic. There is limited communication between the healthcare practitioners. Additionally, most of the payment is from the patient’s pocket.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Marcia Moran shared a stroke patient’s perspective on healthcare:

· When she was released from rehab after her stroke, she was done with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and every other therapy. She was where she needed to be, it was because her insurance company said she was done.
· You can lower your risk of stroke by leading a healthy lifestyle: eat healthy, exercise and low to no alcohol consumption.

Peter Small: A Chief Medical Officer’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:20:48

We hear a chief medical officer’s perspective on healthcare from Peter Small in this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Dr. Peter Small has a specialty in cough which is unique. He is a member of the Baby Boomer Generation and is located in the state of Washington. He is the chief medical officer of Hyfe, a company that uses acoustic tools for respiratory diagnostics and monitoring.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Peter Small gave us a chief medical officer’s perspective on healthcare:

· Hyfe wants to do for cough what the thermometer did for fever. Cough is one of the most common reasons that people seek healthcare, yet it is a symptom that is rarely measured
· Their app is like a Fitbit for coughing. Using the app, you can have hard data around how many times you are coughing each day.
· Looking at the pattern of cough may also give an indication as to its origin. Is it GERD? Is it allergies? Is it a cold? Looking at when people cough can help identify its cause.
· Bonus: There is a value internationally to looking at cough as more than just a symptom of tuberculosis. If it’s not tuberculosis, what is it?

Eliz Greene: A Heart Patient’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:19:44

We get a heart patient’s perspective on healthcare from Eliz Greene on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Eliz is a member of Generation X. She lives in Wisconsin. I met her through the National Speakers Association. Her passion related to heart health, specifically women’s heart health, stems from her own personal experiences.

Here are 3 things that stood out to me from Eliz Greene sharing a heart patient’s perspective on healthcare:

· It is important for medical professionals to understand the things that went well and the things that did not go well during the process.
· Wisconsin is a great place to do research on heart disease because of the stereotypically unhealthy diet.
· A cardiologist who made eye contact and explained the procedure to Eliz, even while she was intubated and could not respond, is a Healthcare Hero.

Jonathan Friedman: A Service Provider’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:19:40

It’s a service provider’s perspective on healthcare from Jonathan Friedman on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Jonathan is from Toronto Canada. He is a Millennial (Generation Y.) His specialty is child and youth counseling as well as coaching. He is the president of “The Journal That Talks Back™.”

Here are 3 things that stood out as Jonathan Friedman gave us a service provider’s perspective on healthcare:

· Sometimes the mental health of people with developmental disabilities can be missed because of the focus on their diagnosis. There needs to be a holistic view.
· Great healthcare is affordable, accessible, and holistic. (A prime example is that psychotherapy is typically not covered or only a few sessions are covered by insurance.)
· Transportation is a huge obstacle for people with disabilities when it comes to accessing the healthcare system.

Eddy Smits: A Hospital Clown’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:20:29

I am thrilled to bring you a hospital clown’s perspective on healthcare from Eddy Smits on this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Eddy is a member of Generation X. He joined the podcast from Belgium where he has worked as a hospital clown. It was a unique opportunity to have a serious conversation about a profession that makes people smile. Personally, I found his thoughts and insights to be fascinating.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Eddy Smits shared a hospital clown’s perspective on healthcare:

· Hospital clowning is a very different animal than regular clowning. In traditional clowning, the clown is the star. In hospital clowning, it’s all about the patient.

· One way to improve the quality of healthcare is to smile as you enter the room.

· Quality healthcare is going beyond the disease. It is seeing the individual as a whole, not as a diagnosis.

· Bonus: Laughter is healing.

00:21:28

We get a physical therapist’s perspective on healthcare from Caroline Morris in this episode of the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast with Rob Oliver. Caroline is from Alexandria, Virginia (just outside of Washington DC.) She is a member of the millennial generation and has worked in the fields of geriatrics and women’s health. Lyn Yaffe: A Researcher’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:22:35

Here are 3 things that stood out as Lyn Yaffe gave us a researcher’s perspective on healthcare:

· EPR is a method of producing rapid cooling to artificially induce hypothermia which temporarily suspends the body’s need for oxygen. This is especially valuable in individuals who have experienced massive blood loss.

· The success rate of CPR is only about 5% in trauma victims. In cases of a cardiac arrest, the success rate is 15% depending on your location and access to services.

· Quality healthcare necessitates regular checkups at the doctor of your choice with the opportunity to be referred to a specialized healthcare center at the discretion of your doctor and at minimal cost.

Vacation Rebroadcast of Anton Gunn: A Hospital Executive’s Perspective on Healthcare
00:19:44

Rob Oliver is on vacation this week so there is not a new interview for the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast. The good news is that he chose one of the episodes that have the greatest impact on him for a rebroadcast. From September 3, 2021 we get a hospital executive’s perspective on healthcare from Anton Gunn. He is a former hospital executive, a social worker by training and made leadership expert. Anton was part of President Obama’s team for the Affordable Care Act. A member of Generation X, he lives in Columbia, South Carolina.

Anton gave us a lot of food for thought as he shared the hospital executive’s perspective. However, here are 3 things that stood out to me from Anton Gunn’s perspective on healthcare:

· Healthcare is not accessible, affordable or available to every person in America
· Quality healthcare is the highest level of care you can receive
· The 3 most important questions:
o “Do you care about me?”
      o “Will you help me?”
      o “Can I trust you?”

She is a member of Generation X. As a medical technologist, she uses algorithms and artificial intelligence to improve patient outcomes.

Here are 3 things that stood out as Gule Sheikh shared a healthcare technologist’s perspective on healthcare:

· The computers and the artificial intelligence rely heavily on the providers to ascertain the correct information to input.
· Every patient represents a unique combination of race, age, education, background, experiences, orientation and more. They need to be treated as such. Population data can be predictive, but it is not guaranteed to fit everyone.

He has a background in orthopedics, neuroscience and rehab services. He is a member of the Millennial Generation (Generation Y.)

Here are 3 things that stood out as Lou Delice shared a healthcare administrator’s perspective on healthcare:

· One of the major problems in Haiti is the access to healthcare. There are places where quality healthcare is available, but they are at a considerable distance for some Haitians.
· The best possible outcome in a healthcare environment is the one that meets the patient’s goal!

Are There Enough Different Perspectives on Healthcare for a Podcast?
00:01:57

I was concerned that Quality Healthcare was becoming a buzzword and that everyone was going to have the same definition. As a result, I asked a doctor, a nurse, hospice nurse and a physician's assistant about their definition and found out that all four had different perspectives.

This reinforced why this podcast is so important. If we have that many different perspectives just on quality healthcare, what will guests have to say about the future of healthcare and improving the quality of healthcare?

I can't wait to do more interviews and hear more Perspectives on Healthcare!

Introduction to the Perspectives on Healthcare Podcast
00:07:00

In this introductory episode of the Perspective on Healthcare Podcast, host Rob Oliver explains where the show came from and what you can expect to hear.

He explains that the perspectives will vary on at least four dimensions: the guest's role in healthcare, the venue in which they operate, their geographic location and their age. Healthcare roles will include doctor, nurse, therapist, administrator, patient, advocate, insurance representative, and more. The venues will include the emergency department, cancer wing, surgery, outpatient clinic, and physician's office just to name a few. From a geographic perspective, there will be voices from the East Coast, West Coast, Midwest, South and, hopefully, International perspective. The goal is to include medical professionals from millennial's through baby boomers.
