GOAT #49: Conveying Truth in Fiction and Family Devotions with Tim Shoemaker
2605

Are you a homeschooling family that struggles to find devotions that teach spiritual truth but also hold your kids' attention? Do you wish you could find clean, riveting fiction for your children to read that doesn't shy away from real-life characters, but is also well-grounded in living out genuine faith?

In this episode, Erin and Amanda speak with Tim Shoemaker, author of twenty books and a popular speaker at conferences and schools around the country. With over twenty-five years working with youth, he is able to relate to his reading (and listening) audience in a very unique way... creating object lessons that convey spiritual truth as well as writing mystery, adventure, and suspense that is clean, powerful, and definitely not “hokey” Christian fiction. Tim is all about helping kids grow to be men and women of faith and character … and about encouraging the parents who love them.

Novels by Tim Shoemaker:
The High Water Novels, a five-book series for Focus on the Family targeted primarily at 12-14-year-olds. Escape From the Everglades,  and Every Hidden Thing, the first two books in the series, are already available. Book three, The Second Storm, comes out in the Spring of 2023.

A contemporary suspense novel, Code of Silence  (book 1 of The Code of Silence Novels), was named in the “Top Ten Crime Novels for Youth” by Booklist, and is followed by Back Before Dark and Below the Surface.

GOAT #46: Gameschooling and More with Cait Curley
2908

Do you have that one kid that just fights you on learning, whether it be one subject or all of them?  Have you considered using games to move the learning along, called "gameschooling?"  When  children play games, they learn social skills like getting along, reading directions, waiting their turn, negotiating with someone, interpreting rules and even coming to an agreement when the rules aren't clear.  These are all things our children will be doing in their adult life and we can coach it in real time in our homeschools.

In today's episode, Amanda talks with Cait Curley of Never Board Learning and My Little Poppies.  They discuss

  • how they came to homeschooling when their children's needs couldn't be met by public schooling
  • the many facets of gifted kids
  • how gameschooling can benefit all kinds of learners
  • how outdoor play helps foster creativity and is such an important part of development
  • how even moms who don't like playing games can use gameschooling to help their families

GOAT #45: Inspiring Our Homeschool Girls to Live Their Dreams with Heather Stark
2090

Having the hard conversations with our daughters who are homeschooled is just as necessary as it is in traditional education settings.  Whether it's social media expectations and "beauty culture" or fitting in versus belonging, our girls need us to help them overcome negative pressures and self-doubt, find their authentic selves, and make lasting friendships!

In today's episode, Erin and Amanda speak with Heather Stark, creator of the Grace & Grit educational programs and author of Her Story: A Heartfelt & Hilarious Conversation About Why Beauty Milestones Should Be Options, Not Expectations.  Heather is a former school counselor who founded Grace & Grit as a means to inspire young girls to live their dreams!  She uses the wisdom gained from her own life experiences to help girls find and feel comfortable with their authentic selves through Grace & Grit.

The Grace & Grit curriculum is comprised of lessons based on a historic female and the single character trait that helped her achieve great things throughout her life.  All of the lessons, whether in single box or curriculum form, are designed to serve as an activity between a girl and a trusted female adult: sparking discussion on important topics, using a workbook with stories, posing and answering challenge and discussion questions, being inspired by Play-It-Forward cards and enjoying other gifts.

GOAT #42: Jamie Erickson on Holy Hygge and Homeschooling
2427

Are you longing for a peaceful homeschool, wanting to rid your home of the chaos and clatter? Atmosphere has little to do with how you decorate ... and more about creating tranquility that is welcoming to our family and visitors alike.  We can foster this kind of "sanctuary living" in an imperfect world by adapting hygge (the Danish quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that results in a feeling of contentment or well-being) to Christian living.

Listen today as Jamie Erickson, podcast host of The Mom to Mom podcast, blogger at The Unlikely Homeschool and author of "Holy Hygge: Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow" shares wisdom on how we can use the seven tenets of hygge to create sanctuary-like homes that mirror and reflect the perfection that we see in the Garden and then later also in the life of Jesus.

GOAT #41: Writing From the Heart with Veldorah Rice
2891

Some of our homeschool students just don't like writing, and it can be a struggle to get them to put words on a page.  How can we teach it in a way that helps them to develop their authentic writing voices and still learn and grow in important skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives?

Listen today as Erin and Amanda speak with Veldorah Rice of Write from the Heart, a writing program that emphasizes helping students find their voices and grow in writing and critical thinking skills.  This is accomplished through an online composition and literature program for homeschoolers as well as in 4-week workshop intensive and individualized coaching sessions, for both public and homeschooled students.

In this episode, they discuss the benefits of learning writing in a nontraditional way, how classics have important lessons to share with modern readers, and why we shouldn't shy away from controversial topics in literature.

GOAT #39: Community Through Coaching and Conference with Christina Carpenter
1398

Building community in homeschooling can sometimes be hard.  While larger cities and suburbs might have co-ops and in-person activities where you can meet like-minded homeschoolers, sometimes there just aren't those resources readily available to you, but it is still so important to "find your tribe."

In today's episode, Erin speaks with Christina Carpenter of Authentic Joy in the Journey and The Bloom and Blossom conference about community building right where you are.  Sometimes stepping out to find the encouragement you need through coaching, conferences and even online friendships in homeschool social media groups, reaps great reward for the homeschool parent in the trenches.

GOAT #38: Conflict Happens in Homeschooling Communities
1907

In most relationships, there will be conflict, and it's just as true for homeschooling communities.  Whether the situation is your child facing relationship issues with other homeschooled kids or irreconciliable differences you might have with another parent at a co-op, it's important to know that other homeschooling families have and do struggle with conflict.

Today, Erin and Amanda speak to conflict resolution even in homeschooling situations.  With practical examples from their own homeschool walks, they share that grace should permeate our relationships (including for ourselves) and that you can adjust your thinking to what's best for you and your family, even when resolving the problem may not seem possible.

GOAT #36: Financial Hardship and Homeschooling
1656

As a homeschooling parent, do you sometimes feel pressure to bring in extra income into your family?  The reasons might be because of employment changes, the economy being tight or sudden expenses that need to be met.  Some families even consider giving up homeschooling and sending their kids back to school so both parents can bring in income to support the family!

In today's episode, Erin and Amanda talk about homeschooling during financial hardship and share their commitments to making home education work for their families, regardless of the financial impact it might make.

GOAT #35: Homesteading in Your Homeschool with Kody Hanner
3231

With the events of the last few years impacting "cost of living" items, more families are wanting to re-connect with the sources of their food and live a lifestyle that is more self-sufficient. This "modern day homesteading" doesn't require you to own a big piece of land, or raise your own animals and it works well for many homeschooling families.

In today's episode, Erin and Amanda speak with Kody Hanner, homesteader and homeschooler of 8 children about her lifestyle, her sense of community and the homeschool curriculum she has developed, Build Your Own Homestead and Introduction to Homestead Science.

GOAT #34: Age Gaps in Your Homeschool
2178

How do we teach our tweens math when there are toddlers underfoot, or keep our teens patient when their younger siblings are slowing everything to a crawl?  That large age difference between and among our children is called an "age gap" and it can be a real challenge to homeschooling.

In today's episode, Erin and Amanda share their experience with age gaps and discuss how it doesn't have to be all hard.  From teaching age appropriateness and finding programs all ages can do together, to handling kindness and considering personality types, there are ways to lessen the impact of having vastly different aged children.

GOAT #33: The Importance of Play
2325

Far too many parents focus on academics as the most critical part of their homeschool, when what may be the more important activity, especially for children, is the concept of play.  Play is defined as a range of intrinsically motivated activities done for pleasure and enjoyment, positively impacting development and growth and important for all ages, including adults!

In today's episode, Erin and Amanda discuss the benefits of play, the role play has held in their families and some ideas on how to incorporate it in a way that will help you and your children thrive in homeschooling.

GOAT #24: Special Education with Regina Clausell
2160

Parents of special education students can sometimes be nervous about homeschooling: circumstances at their local school may force them to withdraw their child or, like with the recent COVID crisis, they may just think it is the best option for their family.  Regardless of how these families arrive at homeschooling, it may not be as simple as buying curriculum, opening a book and leading a lesson. These students can have unique needs and require advocacy, whether with the school districts for services or simply in their day-to-day learning.

Today, Erin and Amanda speak with Regina Clausell, an educational consultant and executive coach with a combined 26 years of experience in a variety of roles in K through 12 special education and higher education. Especially in light of all of the health crisis of the last few years, are you now or have you recently had to care for a family member or other adult while trying to homeschool? Listen as Erin and Amanda share their stories of caregiving while homeschooling and be encouraged that there can be light at the end of the tunnel and you can know that your kids will be okay.

It isn't synonymous with being uneducated but a great option for kids with lots of questions (and maybe not so much for those needing more boundaries.)  Listen in as Erin and Amanda discuss how unschooling and interest-led learning facilitated smartly can have a terrific role in your homeschool.
