Very Personal to You, My Son’s Story of Darkness Delivered Part 2
17:51

In last week's episode, I had my eldest son, Steven, on to discuss his story of his deliverance from darkness. This week, I am delighted to have Steven back with his wonderful wife, Madison, to share how she met Steven at the lowest point in their lives, and how they both experienced rebirth through Christ.

Madison explains how after a few years in spiritual warfare with the struggles of addiction, both she and Steven had the veil begin to lift from their eyes, and they saw God begin to work miracles in both of their hearts. She then talks about marrying Steven and the conscious change they both have made as a couple moving forward into the future.

Very Personal to You, My Son’s Story of Darkness Delivered
26:46

I often like to say the enemy looks for cracks in our lives, small weaknesses or temptations that he can slip into to open us up to sin and temptation. It can become a full on spiritual war for your life, and often times, you don't know how you will find deliverance from the darkness. That is why I am so blessed to have my son, Steven H. Craft, Jr., as today's guest.

Steven shares the story of his battle in darkness with exposure to pornography. Over many years, he struggled with these spirits of lust and feelings of inadequacy. He began to turn to alcohol and drugs as a source of "happiness", only to find the feelings of anxiety grow. However, as he explains in this episode, his story does not end in the darkness, but speaks to rebirth and deliverance through the power of Jesus.

Your Prodigal Child Doesn't Have to Ruin Your Life
20:36

What does it mean to live well and fully? To see rebirth in your child's struggle with addiction and to feel that recovery for yourself as a parent? That's exactly what our guest, Barbara Decker, shares with us on today's episode. Barbara shares her own story about her son Eric's battle with addiction. Desperate for help, she pleaded with a behavioral therapist to assist her son. What he told her completely changed how she approached her son’s addiction: “There’s nothing you can do that will help your son. Only he can choose recovery.”

After this realization, Barbara began looking inward and working to improve herself. While this seemed counterproductive at first, she discovered that these changes in her own life created a positive change in Eric's as well. Barbara is now proud to say that Eric has now been sober for almost five years with no relapses. Now Barbara wants to break down her process and explain why a prodigal child doesn't have to affect a parent's life in a negative way, but rather can be an opportunity for self growth that leaves lasting results for them and their family.

Who is Barbara Decker?

Barbara Decker is a Certified Family Recovery Specialist and founder of Live Well and Fully. Her Love Another Way Program has helped parents support their children through addiction-based challenges. Barbara’s Transformative Boundaries helps the mother-child relationship thrive, and parents learn the best ways to interact with, support, and encourage their adult children to overcome their addiction-based challenges. Her efforts have helped families restore peace in their homes and in their minds. The heartwarming testimonials the program receives are part of the reason why she wants to share her program far and wide.

Things We Talk About in this Episode:

  • Why is it important for parents to also focus on themselves when they want to help a child struggling with addiction?
  • What does Live Well and Fully offer for parents of children walking through addiction?
  • Why are healthy boundaries important for parents?

24:24

**A gentle warning, this episode discusses depression and suicide. If you are feeling vulnerable in this area, please consult with a doctor or mental health professional in your area. Or call the Suicide Prevention number listed in the resources.**

This episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast is all about understanding depression in teens and young adults, and everything that you need to know as a parent if your child begins showing signs of depression. Our guest on today's episode is Dr. Michelle Bengtson, a board certified, clinical neuropsychologist for over 30 years. She sits down with Laine to discuss the many different ways depression can present itself in teens and young adults, and how parents can be properly equipped to help their children through the hardships of depression.

Dr. Michelle shares that depression is not a one-size fits all type of mental illness. There are many different ways that depression can manafest in teens and young adults, as well as create different behaviors, habits and emotions once they begin to experience depression. She emphasizes that parents should not be afraid to ask certain questions to their child, including "have you thought about harming yourself?", because it opens up a path for them to share what they are feeling. It is not your fault as a parent that your child struggles with depression, but it is your responsibility to get them the help they need.

What You Need to Know About Sexual Assaults with Susan Milligan
19:05

**A gentle warning, this episode discusses sexual assault and rape. If you are feeling vulnerable in this area, please consult with a doctor or mental health professional in your area. Or call the National Sexual Assault Hotline listed in the resources.**

The statistics for sexual abuse and rape are absolutely sombering. An American is sexually assaulted every 93 seconds. And every 9 minutes, an American child is sexual abused. These numbers are truly horrifying and it leaves us with questions like "What can I do to help someone who has experienced sexual assault?" or "What do I need to know about sexual assaults to not allow my family members or friends to potentially become victims?" This is why I am so blessed to welcome Licensed Counselor Susan Milligan to the Warfare Parenting Podcast.

Susan Milligan discusses what sexual assault is, what age are individuals abused the most often, and how many different forms sexual assault can take on so we can be prepared as parents to protect our children. Susan then explains who these abusers are and how it is often someone who is close to the victim: a teacher, ex-spouse, or a religious figure. She breaks down how "grooming" is often a big part of manipulating victims into these situations and how the grooming leads to assault and rape.

However, Susan wants parents to know that we can't lose hope from these statistics, because there are so many resources available to both victims and their families to help them on the road to recovery.

Who is Susan Milligan?

Susan Milligan is a Counselor located in Little Rock, AR. Susan specializes in helping clients who have experienced trauma in their past. This trauma could have been a one-time event like an accident or a chronic series of events like abuse. Her clients seek therapy to deal with the negative impacts of these events on their lives, which can include frequent panic attacks, debilitative emotions, inability to form healthy relationships with others, and heavy feelings of shame or guilt.

Things We Talk About In This Episode:

  • What is sexual assault really? What are the different forms that sexual assault can take on?
  • Why is grooming such a big part of the abuse process, especially with victims that are under the age of 18?
  • What is a trauma bond and why can it be so difficult for victims to break that bond?
  • What are the long-term effects on a victim's mental health after they are sexually abused and how can we begin treating them?
  • What should we do as parents to help keep our children safe from sexual abuse?

What would you do if you discovered your child was suffering from self-harm and depression? Would you know where to go to get them the best help possible? On this episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast, we conclude our conversation with Author Dena Yohe on self-harm and where parents can begin looking for resources if they suspect their child is dealing with self-harm and cutting.

Dena shares a list of important resources for parents from books to websites to even support groups hosted through Hope for Hurting Parents. Dena stresses the importance of listening as a parent when they discover their child is self-harming and then equipping themselves with knowledge from books and websites. Her story is the genesis of a global non-profit movement called To Write Love on Her Arms and a movie by the same name.

Heartwarming Victory Over Self-Harm and Cutting
18:26

**A gentle warning, this episode discusses self-harm and cutting. If you are feeling vulnerable in this area, please consult with a doctor or mental health professional in your area. Or call one of the Suicide Prevention numbers listed in the resources.**

How do you begin the process of recovery when you discover someone you love is self-harming? On this week's episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast, Dena Yohe returns to share with us the story of her daughter's recovery from self-harm and cutting, and how her recovery lead to the birth of the ministry To Write Love on Her Arms. Dena shares the story of how her daughter, Renee, began self-harm when she was just 12 years old, and how, over the course of years, that story of pain, depression and shame turned into a story of victory for Renee, Dena and their whole family.

Dena shares what it was like as a mother finding out her daughter was self-harming, how she could have approached the situation better when she first discovered it, and tips for parents to assist them in getting their child the best help possible. She also shares how the enemy often tries to use shame and embarrassment to get us to not talk about these difficult situations, and why it is so important that we do not let the shame of self-harm prevent us from finding help and recovery.

Who is Dena Yohe?

Dena Yohe and her husband Tom are the co-founders of Hope for Hurting Parents, a ministry dedicated to helping parents who are grieving over the destructive choices of their teen and adult children. The Yohes’ ability to bring advice and encouragement to parents is born out of the dark times they experienced with their formerly troubled daughter, Renee, who suffered from addiction, depression, self-injury and suicidal thoughts. Renee has recovered and is now enjoying a successful career as a singer-songwriter and jewelry designer. Her story is the genesis of a global non-profit movement called To Write Love on Her Arms and a movie by the same name.

Things We Talk About in this Episode:

  • Where do you start looking for help when you discover your child has started self-harm?
  • What is the best thing you can say to your child when you find out they are struggling with depression or self-harm
  • How do you ensure you get your child the best help possible so they can recover from their mental illness?
  • Why is it so important to talk about topics like self-harm and not let shame dictate our actions?
  • What is To Write Love on Her Arms and how impactful has it been to those struggling with mental illness?

Have you ever known someone who has contemplated or attempted self harm? The number of children and young adults who self harm is staggering and it can be difficult to know where to look for assistance and guidance on this sensitive topic. That's why on this week's episode of The Warfare Parenting Podcast, I am so grateful to be bringing on award winning author and speaker Dena Yohe. Dena helps break down how self harm can manifest in many different ways from children to young adults, and how we as parents can tell our child that they are not alone in this fight.

Dena tells me about what external factors can contribute to self harm or exacerbate it, some of the signs of secretive self-harm we can look out for as parents, and what to do when we discover that someone we love is self-harming.

Who is Dena Yohe?

Dena Yohe and her husband Tom are the co-founders of Hope for Hurting Parents, a ministry dedicated to helping parents who are grieving over the destructive choices of their teen and adult children. Her story is the genesis of a global non-profit movement called To Write Love on Her Arms and a movie by the same name.

Things We Talk About in this Episode:

  • What is the percentage of children, teens, and young adults who will attempt self-harm?
  • What are the external triggers, like social media, that can make it more likely for our children to self-harm?
  • How do those that self-harm try to hide it from those around them and how can we recognize these symptoms to address them?
  • Why do teens and young adults feel the need to self-harm?

Is there a channel for open communication around body positivity in your home? Do you feel like there is a disconnect between your child and how they value their body? In today's episode, we are back with Tina Yeager, who shared valuable information on Anorexia in the last episode. Today, Tina will be sharing her own experience with Anorexia.

Tina Yeager is an award-winning author, speaker, life coach, and licensed counselor and serves on the Christian Authors Network board and as head mentor with Word Weavers International. She also hosts the Flourish-Meant podcast and is the publisher of Inkspirations Online, a weekly devotional publication for writers.

"Do not neglect your power as a parent, pray over your child, have the mind of Christ, and know they are fearfully and wonderfully made. Continue to pray those prayers faithfully, with expectation, believing that God is big enough that he can bring the healing and deliverance that he wants even more than you do." - Tina Yeager.

Topics covered in this episode:

  • Developing the habits of Anorexia (1:09)
  • Starvation goals (3:02)
  • Over-exercising with Anorexia (3:47)
  • Hiding instead of recovering (4:35)
  • Mindset with Anorexia (5:17)
  • Changes with pregnancy (6:44)

  • Shifting the focus to God and away from your body (14:27)
  • Seeking counseling while leaning on Jesus for deliverance from Anorexia (16:40)
  • Takeaways for parents (18:05)

I pray this episode gives you the needed knowledge and courage to open up an opportunity to have a deep discussion with your child about body image and positives. To see what your child says, and then identify any warning signs of Anorexia affecting your child. We also pray this episode gives your a head start to have the ability to talk with your child about their relationship with food and their weight, and begin your prayers for them early.

How Do You Do Warfare Parenting?
10:42
Hi parents, if you feel like your teen or young adult prodigal will never change, you are not alone! Many of us have seen our teens and young adults make many self-destructive choices or get caught up in the darkness of this world, and we are going to battle this war over our children together. In today's episode, we will preface upcoming episodes where you will find hope, encouragement, and resources so that you as a parent of a prodigal will feel more prepared and armed with the knowledge and authority to help your struggling teen or young adult find victory too!

"… it's time to separate the behavior from the child. The angels of darkness, also known as demons, are our true enemy, not our children. It's hard to keep this in the forefront of our minds as our children's eyes turn cold and we feel as though they are disconnected from the love." - Laine Lawson Craft.

What to look forward to:
  • Introducing Warfare Parenting podcast (0:18)
  • Being in the war zone with our children (1:22)
  • What to expect from the upcoming Warfare Parenting episodes (4:42)
