U20 World Cup Preview, Gold Cup roster analysis, and MLS thumbs up/down reviews w/ The Athletic's Joe Lowery
54:59

Taylor talks to The Athletic's Joe Lowery about his three favorite topics: the US U20 national team, the senior US mens national team, and Major League Soccer. The amount of knowledge in his brain is legitimately absurd.

For the U20s, we focus on realistic expectations for an incredibly talented squad, who might start where, and whether or not Alex Mendez has the best left foot in the US player pool.

After that, we take a look at some of the teams that are having strong seasons so far in Major League Soccer and some... that are not. We use the patented thumbs up/down method to get to the bottom of things, and also take a moment to sing the praises of Bob Bradley and DaMarcus Beasley.

Lastly, there's some Gold Cup roster conversation. Who is Joe most excited to see and what's his preferred starting lineup if the US were to make it to the final.

Grant Wahl discusses the 1991 World Cup, Vincent Kompany becoming a manager, and Americans in the Bundesliga

They also discuss Vincent Kompany's transition to management. Grant interviewed Kompany for a chapter in his book "Masters of Modern Soccer" and shares insight from their many interviews.

After that, Grant previews his new video series "Exploring Planet Futbol." In Part I, he travels around Germany to interview four Americans already involved in the Bundesliga: Chris Richards, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Christian Pulisic. Who is most like to become a national team leader, how good of a driver is McKennie, and what does Pulisic order off-menu at restaurants? All that and more!

1) If you could add 1 player from the 1994 USA World Cup squad to the current USMNT roster, who would it be?

2) Analyzing yet another alternative to penalties

3) Who is the best player in the world who doesn’t play in a country’s top league/ligue/lig?

Weekend Review: Man City wins the Premier League, Liverpool keeps the momentum going, and Man United does the same... but in the opposite direction
01:22:12

Ryan and Taylor spend most of the weekend in the Premier League as they discuss City's second straight title, as well as all the many, many reasons why Liverpool fans should be feeling optimistic. Less so for Manchester United fans: who needs to go, who should come in, and what's really going on at the club? We (mostly Taylor) have thoughts.

There's also a new manager for Schalke, a to-the-wire title race in the Bundesliga, Championship playoffs, and terrible Juventus jerseys!

Richmond Kickers Weekly: Analyzing the Lansing draw w/ Daryl and the US Open Cup win w/ Bobby Warshaw

Daryl and Taylor break down Richmond's dramatic draw with Lansing Ignite. There was a stoppage time screamer of an equalizer... but why did the Kickers find themselves in that position in the first place? D&T take a look at what's working for Richmond and what still needs to improve.

Could the USA play with a left-sided false fullback? Would 5 USMNT players beat 11 amateurs? Why is Berhalter called 3G? (and more listener questions)
56:54

We answer eight listener questions!

Why is Berhalter called 3G?

We've seen the US with a false rightback in Nick Lima and Tyler Adams. Could they play with a false leftback?

Could 5 USMNT players beat 11 amateur players?

Is Michael Bradley's defensive crouch really such a bad thing?

What is the point of metal studs?

If the Premier League and the English Football League and the National League are all different leagues, why aren't the top four tiers of English football a closed system?

If US Soccer is paying USWNT player salaries in the NWSL, is it apples and oranges to compare men's and women's national team pay?

Premier League Panic Rankings w/ Adam Snavely
57:33

If you're looking for a Daryl Grove update, there's a very brief one at the start of this episode (it's as good of news as can be expected).

After that, Taylor calls up Adam Snavely, the author of the always hilarious (and consistently informative) Premier League Panic Rankings, which you can find over on The Athletic. They discuss how the idea first came to be, how Adam comes up with material, and the players and clubs that tend to give him the most ammunition.

But we also get into a wide variety of topics (the importance of Peter Crouch, the photoshopping abilities of Emily Sonnett, the demise of the #10 role, and possible destinations for Mesut Ozil, for example). Lots of good stuff in this one, so don't hesitate to put it in your ears!

01:03:23

ESPN's Sebastian Salazar joins the show to discuss the (semi-disappointing) Transfer Deadline Day that was, with specific emphasis on Luciano Acosta, Miguel Almiron, and Sebastian Giovinco.

We then get into his work as a sideline reporter, including which interviewees are particularly challenging and what his approach is when translating on the fly.

Lastly, there's a solid chunk of USMNT conversation, which is a fitting word to use given that locker room communication seems to be a major emphasis of the Gregg Berhalter era.

Taylor calls up Bobby Warshaw (of ExtraTime Radio fame) to get his thoughts on Gregg Berhalter's 27-player roster for the upcoming USMNT January camp. Who might stand out? Who has Bobby saying "meh?" And what does the squad tell us about Berhalter's approach?

We also dive into Bobby's preferred Starting USMNT XI for a theoretical, must-win game away to Trinidad, and take a quick look at a few of the mLS managerial vacancies. Lots discussed in 40+ minutes of soccer-y goodness!

What's the best USMNT starting XI right now, are football groups good for soccer, and more listener questions
55:47

Daryl is back (via the interwebs) to answer 5 listener questions...

1) If you arrive early enough to a live game to see the players warm-up, is there any information you can glean from what you see?

2) What is the best spot in a stadium to watch a soccer game?

3) Are football groups good or bad? Do they help develop soccer around the world or do they give their ownership groups an unfair advantage?

4) If we were hired to manage the USMNT in one do-or-die (literally) game, who would be in our starting eleven and what tactics would be utilize?

5) Has there ever been a USMNT coach that didn't Harvey Dent themselves? That is, manager long enough to become the villain.

USA v Canada and Spain v England Reviews
41:11

We review the USA's (comprehensive) 2-0 victory over Canada in the final of the 2018 CONCACAF Championship. How good was that goal from Rose Lavelle? What do we do if Julie Ertz gets injured? (short answer: panic). Why did Canada struggle so much when dealing with the USA's pressing? All that and more!

We then move on to break down England's surprise 3-2 win over Spain in the UEFA Nations League, and ponder a world in which a confident England are actually capable of scoring goals and looking fun. It's a strange reality we live in.

USMNT listener questions Part II... plus, Pogba and Mourinho have words
01:06:22

In the first part of today's show, we discuss the latest Pogba-Mourinho drama (STAY OFF THAT INSTAGRAM, YOU KIDS!) and analyze the USL's new structure for next season.

After that, we move on to part two of our USMNT listener question extravaganza:

1) What's the best USMNT kit of all time?

2) Now that we have enough fast fullbacks, is Daryl more open to a back 3?

3) Who is the best option to play the #6 role for the US going forward?

4) Could the USMNT hire one coach to cover the senior and U23 teams?

5) If the Americas had been one federation for the past 50 years, do you think it would have had any effect on where the US Men's program is at this moment in time?

6) What breed of dog would best represent the USMNT?

7) Why does Nagbe routinely get omitted from USMNT discussion this cycle?

8) Is Schalke becoming the new team with all the young American players on the squad?

Who should be the next USMNT captain, what tactics should the new US manager employ, and other listener questions
01:11:22

On Part 1 of our USMNT-centric listener question spectacular, Daryl and Taylor do their best to answer nine questions:

1) Is the USA's fullback problem is solved? If so, where is the next position deficiency?

2) Who would you prefer to wear the USMNT captain armband in the future?

3) When during the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign did things start to go wrong?

4) 20 years from now, who will be regarded as the better US manager, Jurgen Klinsmann or Steve Sampson?

5) What specific tactical things would you like to see from the next USMNT manager?

6) Would an MLS team that only fielded American players, similar to Chivas in Liga MX, be a good thing?

7) What are the chances of a Gerrard/Lampard type situation with McKennie and Adams?

8) Who are some of the new MLS, Liga MX, or youth players you believe will get a look at the January camp?

9) What are some ways we could increase media coverage and scrutiny of the USMNT?
