The God of Cancer
00:54:00
The Bible says in John 14:13-14, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."  Mark 11:24 assures the faithful, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Christians (and those of other religions) worldwide pray fervently for the cures to cancer, disease, and all manner of malady and misfortune.  Are those prayers activating the healing hand of God as promised in scripture?  This is a difficult and often unpopular conversation, but a necessary one.  And amid the global avalanche of human suffering, we must address and understand what prayer is, why we do it, what results it does (or doesn't) bring, and the nature of the god who receives our desperate pleas.  We must also reevaluate our models for compassion, help and healing...and the agents of rescue and goodness who are so often, tragically, ignored. This presentation by Seth Andrews, given at the "Shift to Reason" conference in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 30, 2016, is far from a complete examination of the subject, but it explores some important, key questions regarding faith, divine protection, suffering, prayer and healing intervention.  The video of this speech can be seen HERE:  https://youtu.be/Qht73MF6C84

God's Not Dead: The Christian Persecution Complex
00:29:00
"God's Not Dead" is a film produced by PureFlix which released in 2014.  With a budget of only $2 million, GnD grossed over $60 million.  It's not hard to see why a sequel film has just been introduced to theaters. The premises of both films are essentially the same.  Christianity is under attack in the United States, and brave God Warriors must stand up against the evil atheists to defend their faith and their savior.   Are these movies rooted in any shade of reality?  And how do they speak to another, larger phenemenon within many religious cultures: the manufacturing of martyrdom? Seth Andrews shares a recent article by (former Christian) Neil Carter, as we examine the Christian Persecution Complex. Skeptical Youth
00:59:00
A November 2015 Pew Research Center survey revealed that the United States is becoming less religious overall, and "especially the youngest Millennials, who have entered adulthood since the first Landscape Study was conducted {a few months earlier} - are far less religious than their elders." Admittedly, these "nones" aren't necessarily atheists, and many may consider themselves "spiritual" on some level.  But what's driving this exodus from the formal structures of religion, and what do these young people think and say about the often hugely religious climate they see all around them. This show focuses on youth, how they view the world, and how their exit from the church is impacting the United States and the world. Secular Student Alliance:  https://secularstudents.org

Medical Neglect in the Name of God - PART 1 OF 2 (with Rita Swan)
00:53:00
There are two words that, too often, mean the difference between life and death:  Religious.  Exemption.  Individuals and families who reject necessary medical care in favor of prayer and adherence to strict church restrictions often pay with their lives, or the lives of their children.   Rita Swan is the director of CHILD, INC, and she has firsthand experience with this.  Rita has since dedicated her life to child advocacy and the fight to protect children from (often well-meaning) parents who keep them far from hospital care, and far from the health solutions they desperately need. It's a difficult subject, but a necessary discussion about faith, parental responsibility, and the need for real-world solutions to real-world problems. This is part one of a two-part show on this subject.  Part two features Dr. Paul Offit, author of the book, "Bad Faith: When Religious Belief Undermines Modern Medicine," which airs February 2, 2016. A Letter to the Editor
01:35:00
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR:  audiblepodcast.com/thinkingatheist A listener on the TTA Facebook page recently asked Seth Andrews to respond to a "Letter to the Editor" posted in Seth's hometown paper, the Tulsa World.  Usually, as skeptics, we let these kinds of posts slide, because they often don't accomplish much and/or they generate more trouble that they're worth. But in this case, Seth responded, and this show chronicles the exchange, the fallout, and the curious tactics of the indignant commenters who couldn't prove the god they were defending. Yes...it's a rant.  (Gonna be one of those shows.)  Enjoy. Sam Harris: An Atheist Manifesto:  http://www.truthdig.com/dig/item/200512_an_atheist_manifesto

The Butterfly Effect
01:24:00
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR:  http://www.harrys.com (coupon code: thinkingatheist) Relating to Chaos Theory, the term "butterfly effect" relates to the tiniest of influences leading to large differences in deterministic nonlinear systems.  One incarnation of the saying suggests that one flap of a single butterfly's wings in Beijing might change the weather in New York.  (Perhaps you remember Jurassic Park's Ian Malcolm waxing about Chaos Theory in advance of the park's inevitable meltdown.) We're not spending much time on the hard science of Chaos Theory.  This show is more interested in the stories - the human stories - about the small intersections of life, the tiny changes, the unexpected encounters which changed the trajectory of people's lives. What was a moment or encounter which seemed inconsequential at the moment, but ultimately came to re-frame and re-define you?   Share your stories and perspective at podcast@thethinkingatheist.com

In the Wake of Charlie Hebdo
01:58:00
On January 7, 2015, two masked gunmen killed 12 people, 11 of whom worked for the French satirical newspaper, "Charlie Hebdo," a publication with a reputation for lampooning Islam and its prophet. Terror alerts remain high, and in the wake of the killings, Charlie Hebdo remained defiant, publishing a caricature of Muhammad on its very next issue.  Millions of copies immediately sold. Soon after, Pope Francis declared his condemnation of the attack and hi support for free speech, but also declared that "you cannot insult people's faith." The debate rages on.  Did these attackers truly represent the religion of Islam?  Should the attack have been expected because it was provoked?  Should satire expect protection in all of its forms, or are there limits?  And what should responsible media outlets do in regard to religion, free speech and the safety of its employees. No Longer Quivering
01:18:00
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR:  http://www.naturebox.com/thinkingatheist The Quiverfull Movement is a lifestyle among fundamentalist Christians which believes that an abundance of children is in compliance with God's perfect will.  Contraception equals abortion, a heinous sin against God, so the only "family planning" that's done is a prayer to the sky that His will be done.  The Quiverfull Movement is highly patriarchal and often has a dark side in relation to the rights of women and children. In this episode, we explore The Quiverfull Movement, we speak with Kathryn Joyce, author of the book: "Quiverfull: Inside the Christian Patriarchy Movement," and we speak to some who once experienced this culture inside its walls, including Vykie Garrison, who hosts the online community, "No Longer Quivering." Should We Mock Religion?
01:28:00
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR:  http://www.naturebox.com/thinkingatheist The late Christopher Hitchens once said that "Mockery of religion is one of the most essential things...one of the beginnings of the human emancipation is the ability to laugh at authority.  It's indispensable."   But does the mockery of religious belief close minds (and doors) as skeptics attempt to promote rationalism and disabuse superstitious people of their faiths (and is that even a goal)?  Should the ridiculous be ridiculed, or should we find other methods for exposing the cracks in religious foundations? In this lighthearted show, we look at religious films from the past century, from Cecil B. Demile fare to the recent "Son of God" and various non-Hollywood movies that have "blessed" theater screens with tales of divinity, tragedy and (almost inevitably) large amounts of cheese. If you've seen "The Ten Commandments," "The Passion of the Christ," or the recent (and some would say sacreligious) Aronofsky interpreation of the "Noah" story, bring your reviews and join us for an entertaining podcast. The Rise of Black Secularism
01:24:00
In his presentation “Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities,” Leo Igwe said that “If there are people who should be religious and theistic today, it is not black people.” Yet black people are reputed to be the most religious people on earth, and the social stigma for the black atheist can be significant and often severe. As skeptics, how do we approach the issue of color in relation to non-belief?  Should we strive to be “colorblind,” ignoring labels like black, white, etc?  Or should color be acknowledged, embraced and even celebrated by those who accept the evolutionary explanation of our origins (aka: we are all Africans)? Tonight features a panel of very special guests:  Jamila Bey: Director of Commnications for the Secular Student Alliance, Alix Jules, President of Black Nonbelievers of Dallas, and Bridgette Gaudette, Executive Director of the Florida Humanist Association.  The show will respectfully approach a subject that is controversial, even considered taboo, and will hopefully provide education and resources for atheists of all colors and cultures. Nathan Phelps: The Death of My Father
00:44:00
Fred Phelps, reviled (and excommunicated) pastor of Westboro Baptist Church, built his life upon a foundation of hatred: the protests of military funerals, the condemnation of homosexuals, professed gratitude to God for terrorist attacks, and much more. Recent news reports of Fred Phelps' death have again brought his name and face to worldwide attention, prompted by a public statement from his own son, Nathan, who escaped Wesboro and has become a champion of human rights in the face of his father's hatred. In this podcast, we talk to Nathen Phelps.  About his father.  About his father's death.  About the celebratory public response.  About the Westboro legacy.  And about the often conflicted feelings of a father's son at a time when he is denied access, or should he choose it, the opportunity to say "goodbye." Join us for a compelling discussion.

Satanic Panic
01:15:00
Podcast sponsored by http://ComputerLearningZone.net In the 70s, 80s and early 90s, a phenomenon known today as The Satanic Panic swept the United States, as the evangelical Christian community charged that a vast underground network of Satanists were controlling large parts of society.   Believers were warned about products subsidized by Satan, including over-the-counter items like detergent and toothpaste, and there was a huge focus on toys, games and cartoons infected with demons.   In this show, we talk about the Satanic Panic of the past, and we look at modern-day charges of Satanic media, products and influences in our culture. Atheism: Just Another Religion?
01:09:00
Is atheism a replacement for religion?  Or is atheism simply another religion? As non-theists and freethought groups organize, gather and even sometimes attend things like the "Sunday assembly," the charge is often heard that the godless are acting religious, that their adherence to science is "faith," and that their gatherings are just anothe form of church. In this show, we explore the question.  And we hear from David Silverman, President of one of the largest atheist (religious???) organizations in the world.

Divine Protection
01:01:00
Romans 8:28 declares, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Luke 12 says that the very hairs on our heads are numbered, and that even the sparrows are not forgotten by God.  To the believer, God says "Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." But are the faithful truly insulated from calamity, pain and death? In this podcast, we take a rational look at Divine Protection. Your calls and emails:  podcast@thethinkingatheist.com

Dr. Darrel Ray is author of the book, "The God Virus: How Religion Affects Our Lives and Culture," and "Sex & God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality." In his writings and presentations, Darrel reveals the subtle (and not so subtle) ways that religion uses shame as a weapon against those who might dare to fall outside its narrow boundaries.   Join us for a fascinating look at Religion & Shame.

Bill Nye and the Creationist Guy
01:28:00
On February 4th, 2014, Bill Nye ("The Science Guy") has agreed to debate Ken Ham, president of Answers In Genesis and The Creation Museum.  The debate will take place on Ham's home turf, at The Creation Museum, and the 800 available tickets sold out almost immediately. This event raises the larger question:  Should scientists agree to these types of debates? Some (like Richard Dawkins) say "no," as it would be akin to an obstetrician debating a proponent of the "stork theory" of reproduction.  Others insist that the debate is not only appropriate, but necessary. Joining us in this discussion are Matt Dillahunty, Dr. Richard Carrier, Greta Christina, David Silverman, Ed Hensley and AronRa.   Articles: RDFRS:  Why Bill Nye Shouldn't Debate Ken Ham http://www.richarddawkins.net/foundation_articles/2014/1/16/why-bill-nye-shouldn-t-debate-ken-ham AHA:  WHY THE BILL NYE-KEN HAM DEBATE IS A GOOD THING http://americanhumanist.org/HNN/details/2014-01-why-the-bill-nye-ken-ham-debate-is-a-good-thing AHA:  BILL NYE SHARING THE STAGE WITH KEN HAM IS A MISTAKE http://americanhumanist.org/HNN/details/2014-01-bill-nye-sharing-the-stage-with-ken-ham-is-a-mistake

Random Acts of Kindness
00:59:00
Kindness, gentleness, empathy, compassion, love, goodness, morality.  These attributes are often called the property of religion, and beautiful acts of kindness between people actually reflect a moral code given to humanity by the Great Eye in the Sky. Of course, this is nonsense. We've covered the subject of "Morality" in a previous episode (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thethinkingatheist/2013/04/09/morality).  But the source and nature of morality isn't what tonight's particular show is about. Tonight is merely a chance to share stories about helping others, with each example providing encouragement and a reminder that even the smallest gestures can transform someone's world. These gestures didn't come about because we were directed to by a "voice" or ancient holy book (in fact, we're glad our morality isn't derived from the bible, Qur'an, etc).  They happened because we sought to provide a human solution to a human problem, and in doing so, we felt the satisfaction and joy of knowing we made a difference. Tell us about your random act of kindness (and the reaction that followed).  Email: podcast@thethinkingatheist.com

Does Religion Poison Everything?
01:17:00
In his 2007 book, "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything," the late Christopher Hitchens asserted, without apology, that there is nothing that has been or can be improved by religion.  In fact, religion is a toxin which damages or destroys everything it touches. Is this assertion accurate and fair?  Is there nothing positive that religion has brought to humanity? We discuss the issue.  Your calls and emails (send to podcast@thethinkingatheist.com)

I'm An Atheist, But I'm Not "Out"
01:32:00
Surveys from Pew and other organizations show non-belief as the fastest growing "religious group" (for lack of a better term) in the United States. Some are simply unconcerned about religious.  But many are self-professed atheists.   However, many of these atheists have only professed their non-belief to a select few, and some haven't told anyone at all. This show deals with atheists who aren't "out."  What are the reasons for remaining silent?  What are the consequences of going public?  And how is the culture shifting to perhaps make it easier for the non-theist to step out of the shadows.
