The God of Cancer
The Bible says in John 14:13-14, "And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it."  Mark 11:24 assures the faithful, "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours." Christians (and those of other religions) worldwide pray fervently for the cures to cancer, disease, and all manner of malady and misfortune.  Are those prayers activating the healing hand of God as promised in scripture?  This is a difficult and often unpopular conversation, but a necessary one.  And amid the global avalanche of human suffering, we must address and understand what prayer is, why we do it, what results it does (or doesn't) bring, and the nature of the god who receives our desperate pleas.  We must also reevaluate our models for compassion, help and healing...and the agents of rescue and goodness who are so often, tragically, ignored. This presentation by Seth Andrews, given at the "Shift to Reason" conference in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 30, 2016, is far from a complete examination of the subject, but it explores some important, key questions regarding faith, divine protection, suffering, prayer and healing intervention.  The video of this speech can be seen HERE:

A November 2015 Pew Research Center survey revealed that the United States is becoming less religious overall, and "especially the youngest Millennials, who have entered adulthood since the first Landscape Study was conducted {a few months earlier} - are far less religious than their elders." Medical Neglect in the Name of God - PART 1 OF 2 (with Rita Swan)
There are two words that, too often, mean the difference between life and death:  Religious.  Exemption.  Individuals and families who reject necessary medical care in favor of prayer and adherence to strict church restrictions often pay with their lives, or the lives of their children.   Rita Swan is the director of CHILD, INC, and she has firsthand experience with this.  Rita has since dedicated her life to child advocacy and the fight to protect children from (often well-meaning) parents who keep them far from hospital care, and far from the health solutions they desperately need. It's a difficult subject, but a necessary discussion about faith, parental responsibility, and the need for real-world solutions to real-world problems. This is part one of a two-part show on this subject.  Part two features Dr. Paul Offit, author of the book, "Bad Faith: When Religious Belief Undermines Modern Medicine," which airs February 2, 2016. SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: This podcast is a digression from our usual subject matter...a romp through the interesting explanations of random sayings, occurrences, facts and traditions.  What makes a cat purr?  Why do weddings have a "best man?"  Why do tennis scores use "love" instead of "zero?"  Why do people choose chopsticks over the fork?  Why is it "soccer" in America and "football" in Europe?  Can a human live for any length of time exposed in space?  Etc. We won't change the world with this show, but as seekers of knowledge (even trivial knowledge), we'll learn some interesting stuff, and we'll have some fun together.  Enjoy OATMEAL article "Who VS Whom:"

David Silverman: Fighting God
David Silverman is a self-proclaimed "atheist billboard" and "firebrand atheist."  As President of American Atheists, he has been at the point position on many controversial issues (and the occasional lawsuit), and he has just released a new book called, "Fighting God: An Atheist Manifesto for a Religious World." David spoke with Seth Andrews about the book, the lightning rod of David's particular brand of activism, and the rise of non-belief in America.   This conversation can also be seen on YouTube:

The Krampus (and other unusual Christmas traditions)
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: (promo code: thinkingatheist) This will be the last radio podcast until the Christmas holiday.  It's a romp around the globe, as we explore some Christmas traditions beyond Santa, Frosty the Snowman, holiday ham, and the baby Jesus.  Get ready for Christmas witches, fried chicken feasts, Festivus ("for the rest of us"), the Spanish pooper, and of course, the Krampus. Seth writes about the Krampus (and many other things) in his book, "Sacred Cows: a Lighthearted Look at Belief and Tradition Around the World."

The War On Christmas
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: "War On Christmas" has been used so much in the media, it has become a parody of itself.  And yet many still hold to the belief that the baby Jesus is under attack by atheists and secular humanists, and the protests sound at full volume every December. In this broadcast, we talk about some of the noise out there, and we speak to Andrew Seidel of the Freedom From Religion Foundation about the holiday, church/state separation, lawsuits over nativity scenes, atheist holiday celebrations and more. The Insanity of Humanity
This podcast features the audio from Seth Andrews' presentation at FreeFlo 2015, the Freethought Florida Conference in Orlando.  The speech is an often lighthearted (but occasionally alarming) exploration of "sacred" ideas and practices in the 21st century, and it explores the merits of retiring damaging rituals in favor of better ones. Religious parents and institutions know the importance of a child's developmental years, and how difficult it is to tell/sell supernatural claims once the child reaches his or her teen years.   In this podcast, Seth Andrews explores the "programming" of young minds, and explores the difference between education and indoctrination.  Capping the show is the personal story of a young woman named Kaitlyn, whose apostasy prompted her devout Mormon parents to kick her out of her home. Secular Stand-Ups
Steve Hill, Maryellen Hooper and Keith Lowell Jensen are professional comedians.  They are also atheists. In this roundtable discussion, Seth Andrews asks them about life on the road (and the stage), how their non-belief in the supernatural influences their material, facing the hecklers, and their desires to make people laugh while, perhaps, also making them think. Can I Talk You Out of Your Faith
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: (promo code: thinkingatheist) Is it possible to "talk someone out of their faith?"  Is it even appropriate or worthwhile to make an attempt?  If so, how might atheists best approach those with deep-seated (and often lifelong) religious convictions to foster real discourse and encourage critical thinking? Dr. Peter Boghossian is author of the book, "A Manual for Creating Atheists."  Anthony Magnabosco is a YouTube activist and advocate of "street epistemology."  Both men join Seth Andrews for this interesting discussion. Ghost Stories 2015
Halloween is almost upon us, which means it's time again to turn down the lights, crank up the podcast, and share some ghost stories. Happy Halloween!

The Science of Fear
Why do we become afraid?  Is it rational or irrational to fear the dark, spiders, the boogeyman, the things that go bump in the night? It's October, the month of frights. So, a week in advance of our Ghost Stories episode, we expore the concept of fear, and we talk about the things that keep us awake in the still of the night (or in the light of the day).  Special thanks to our special guest: Dr. Carolyn Rodriguez of Stanford University.

A Letter to the Editor
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: A listener on the TTA Facebook page recently asked Seth Andrews to respond to a "Letter to the Editor" posted in Seth's hometown paper, the Tulsa World.  Usually, as skeptics, we let these kinds of posts slide, because they often don't accomplish much and/or they generate more trouble that they're worth. But in this case, Seth responded, and this show chronicles the exchange, the fallout, and the curious tactics of the indignant commenters who couldn't prove the god they were defending.'s a rant.  (Gonna be one of those shows.)  Enjoy. The Butterfly Effect
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: (coupon code: thinkingatheist) Relating to Chaos Theory, the term "butterfly effect" relates to the tiniest of influences leading to large differences in deterministic nonlinear systems.  One incarnation of the saying suggests that one flap of a single butterfly's wings in Beijing might change the weather in New York.  (Perhaps you remember Jurassic Park's Ian Malcolm waxing about Chaos Theory in advance of the park's inevitable meltdown.) We're not spending much time on the hard science of Chaos Theory.  This show is more interested in the stories - the human stories - about the small intersections of life, the tiny changes, the unexpected encounters which changed the trajectory of people's lives. What was a moment or encounter which seemed inconsequential at the moment, but ultimately came to re-frame and re-define you?   Share your stories and perspective at

In the Wake of Charlie Hebdo
On January 7, 2015, two masked gunmen killed 12 people, 11 of whom worked for the French satirical newspaper, "Charlie Hebdo," a publication with a reputation for lampooning Islam and its prophet. Terror alerts remain high, and in the wake of the killings, Charlie Hebdo remained defiant, publishing a caricature of Muhammad on its very next issue.  Millions of copies immediately sold. Soon after, Pope Francis declared his condemnation of the attack and hi support for free speech, but also declared that "you cannot insult people's faith." The debate rages on.  Did these attackers truly represent the religion of Islam?  Should the attack have been expected because it was provoked?  Should satire expect protection in all of its forms, or are there limits?  And what should responsible media outlets do in regard to religion, free speech and the safety of its employees.
