Episode 115: Phish 8.10.96, Alpine Valley
02:11:59
This week, we're diverging from Baker's Dozen listening and analysis to look back at a summer show from 1996. We play the first set of 8.10.96, which was Phish's first show at the storied Alpine Valley, as well as a couple tracks from set 2. The details of the set are below. During this episode, we mentioned that we covered 8.6.96 in episode 8. If you want to go back and check that out, you can find it here. We had a blast doing the Baker's Dozen Quick Hits as well as the live event in New York. We'll be back with Quick Hits this weekend from the Dick's shows, and we hope that we can do another live event over the holidays if they do indeed pull the trigger on a New Year's MSG run. If you can, review us on iTunes, and support HF Pod Plus. Thank you. -- Phish, 8.10.96, Alpine Valley Music Theater, East Troy, WI Set 1: My Friend, My Friend, Poor Heart \> AC/DC Bag \> Fee \> Reba, I Didn't Know, The Horse \> Silent in the Morning, Rift \> Bathtub Gin, Cavern Intro Music: Phish, Whipping Post, 8.10.96 Outro Music: Harry Hood \> A Day In The Life, 8.10.96 Photo from Golgi Project

Episode 109: Tribute to Col. Bruce Hampton
01:50:41
This week we take a moment to say farewell to a man who has touched and influenced so many in our scene, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Ret. He has often been referred to as a "godfather of the jam scene," and he was respected and loved by so many. He was a leader of the jamband scene, as it grew from the clubs of the late 80s and spawned H.O.R.D.E. in the early 90s and through to today. He passed surrounded by loved ones, friends, and fans, doing what he did for so long, introducing the unexpected into music. Whether it be the Hampton Grease Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fiji Mariners, the Code Talkers, or playing Trombone with Phis, he provoked his fellow players to circumvent the obvious and inspired them to rise to ever greater heights. This episode focuses on the intersections of Col. Bruce and Phish, of course, and also some other music (see below). A few other things: please give us input into our survey about how Phish has impacted your life. We have some good ideas for what to do with this stuff, so get your submission in! Episode 103: Tweezer So Cold
02:24:19
For many (most?) fans, there’s no greater gift at a Phish show than a Tweezer. Phish experiences are formed and strengthened based on single performances of this song. Shows can be saved by its appearance, soaring out of the speakers with Superman cape and all. Our friend and collaborator Matt is the brains behind this episode, and we're grateful to him for taking this on and putting this awesome resource together. Here's a link to the Tweezer So Cold data dashboard that Matt created (it's also embedded below). Also for this episode, we're collaborating with Phish.net again. Their hard work laid the foundation for all of the stuff Matt has done, and they agreed to host a blog post we put together about this episode. This episode is a mixture of us talking about Tweezer and playing LOTS of awesome Tweezer clips. Because this was such a great discussion, we only made it from the Tweezer debut in 1990 through 2000. Part 2 to tackle 2.0 and 3.0 will be coming soon. We're eager to hear your thoughts and feedback. Please subscribe and review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Also like us on Facebook. Episode 102: HF Pod Plays Dead
01:38:30
Hello friends! This week we're doing something different: we're playing Dead. Jonathan took the lead on this experiment, and we hope you'll like it. If you do, we may do it more in the future. Let us know what you think. The Grateful Dead has of course been a huge influence on all of us, and we wanted to share some of our thoughts and the Dead's music with our listeners. The music in this episode is a mix made by Jonathan, made up of many different snippets of versions of The Other One. Hope you enjoy. The clip contains an simulated bomb and explosion generated via midi. Then I repeated the process until the track was reduced to the 1 second version currently in this mix. Venue information is not repeated so as to keep things relatively tidy. Episode 101: Chris Pandolfi interview
01:03:59
This week we're excited to be talking with Chris Pandolfi of the Infamous Stringdusters. They just released an excellent album, Laws of Gravity, and they're on tour! Here are the dates, but over the next week they'll be in the Bay Area, Southern California, Vegas, and Colorado. In the next couple of months they'll be all over the Midwest and back on the West Coast. It's a great concert experience. You may not be surprised to find out that we also talk about Phish. Chris is a huge fan and talks about playing with Page and Fishman (and Phil Lesh and others). Fun conversation, and we play a little bit of a show that Chris and I saw together, which really brought him back into the Phish orbit in 2014. Episode 100: We made it.
02:11:49
Thanks for tuning in this week! We made it to episode 100, so we decided to take this time to reflect back on the first 99 episodes and talk about some notable conversations, the lessons we've learned, and how much this podcast means to all 3 of us. We also want to reiterate how thankful we are to all of our listeners for your support, ideas, feedback and enthusiasm. We'll keep going as long as you keep listening. Of course, we also play some music. We each chose a track that we wanted to keep revisiting and share it with you (Brad, being Brad, chose 2. He's a lawyer, so we can't argue with him.) Episode 99: Daniel Pinchbeck Interview
02:10:34
This week's guest is Daniel Pinchbeck, the author of How Soon Is Now?, which comes out on February 20. It's a fascinating and timely book that talks about how we can collectively get out of the ecological and environmental disasters we've gotten ourselves into. You can read more about Daniel here. This is a bit of a departure from our typical subject matter, but the overlap of consciousness, psychedelics, music and culture seemed appropriate to probe into, especially at this inflection point in American history. Really thought provoking conversation. Of course, there is some music. Went back to the archive for some early Phish, which we think was probably influenced by psychedelics. Enjoy! Episode 92: Phish.Net Conversation
01:21:44
We had the privilege of interviewing Marco Walsh, Board President of The Mockingbird Foundation and a prominent member of the Phish.Net community who's given countless hours of his time over the years. This interview gave us the chance to talk in depth about the history of the site and the Foundation, while hearing about the incredible work that all the volunteers have done for 20+ years. We of course also touch on the Phish Companion. Hey, it's the holidays! Pick one up for a friend or loved one. Also, there's a contest! The Mockingbird Foundation donated one copy of the book as well as a really cool poster. All you have to do is share this post with your friends on Facebook and/or Twitter using #MbirdHFPod and we'll pick two random winners (one for the book and one for the poster) on Monday, December 5. Marco also shares memories from his first show, 4.17.92 at the Warfield in San Francisco. We talk a bit about that tour and that show, and we play a few tracks from that night. A great memory for Marco and a good show to revisit. Hope you enjoy. Please subscribe and review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Also like us on Facebook. An Issue We Can't Overlook
00:23:48
Today we bring you a different kind of conversation. Over the past several weeks, there has been a lot of conversation online about harassment and abuse of women at Phish shows and in the community more broadly. We invited three ladies on to talk about this, Felicia, Shelly and Jen. This episode was informed by the work of Brian Colligan, who wrote a piece about this topic. We borrowed the episode title from his piece. We hope this conversation sheds a bit of light on the issues and allows us to work together to make sure this kind of shit does not happen. We'll be back with our Fall Tour recap episode later this week. In the meantime, please subscribe and review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Also like us on Facebook. 01:50:58
Today we're releasing a mix of Summer tracks and jams, compiled by our very own @RowJ. If you want to see the track listing, you can do so here, but we'd strongly suggest just listening through and looking at the tracks after. This is entirely made up of audience recordings, and we want to extend a sincere thank you to the tapers who take on the ups and downs of bringing us these shows. It's a service to the community and it's greatly appreciated. Lastly, let us know how we're doing. Hit us up on Twitter or send us an email at helpingfriendlypodcast at gmail. We want to hear your thoughts. Intro/Outro Music: Jane's Addiction, Summertime Rolls

Quick Hit: Phish @ Wrigley Field, 6/24/16
00:18:44

Episode 83: Top 15 Summer Jams!
02:59:30
This week, we have our most ambitious podcast undertaking to date, done in partnership with our guest Justin Bruce. This episode will feature the top 15 Phish Summer jams, as voted on by YOU! The format is a bit different: We count down the 15 jams a few at a time, and discuss in between. We encourage you to listen to the show all the way through to hear the countdown, but if you absolutely must know, you can click this link to see the list and how the episode timing breaks down. But we would encourage you to NOT do that and listen to the way it unfolds for your ears. As we're approaching tour, be sure to get your Summer Tour opener guess in! This week, we decided to discuss and explore Chalk Dust Torture and its evolution over the years. Phish has of course been playing this song since 1991, and the evolution of the song has pretty closely followed the trajectory of their music—incredible precision, then a bit of exploration, then funk, then way more space and groove, then into the current era of patient but ambitious jams. Tracks are below. If you haven't yet, please take our quick survey about how we can improve the podcast. Also, review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Episode 74: Year in Review Phish 2015
01:18:19
2015 was a hell of a year for Phish. We attempt to do it justice in Episode 74, with great group of guests joining us for this 3-part episode. Each part touches on a different theme, with Part 1 focused on the new material that was released this year (tracks below, discussion of music starts around 49:00). Part 2 will focus on the evolution of improvisation in 2015, and Part 3 will just be some jams we think you shouldn't miss. Part 3 will just be music without discussion. We appreciate Allie, Chris, Zac and Dianna joining us for this really fun discussion. This past year was a little different for Phish. Fewer shows, no Fall tour, Trey guest starring in Fare Thee Well shows, Magnaball, and another glorious New Year's run at Madison Square Garden. Episode 69: Fall '95 Highlights Pt. 3
02:23:30
It’s been 20 years, folks, since the epic Fall 1995 tour. Everything changed for Phish in 1995 (as it did again in ’97, ’99, ’04, ’13 and ’15). But this signaled the beginning of a new era—bigger venues, bigger crowds, bigger expectations. And during this tour, Phish did what they do best. They delivered. Our friends Wade and Josh joined us for this equally epic 3-part episode, where we played and discussed some of the highlights from this Fall 1995 tour. In contrast to the Summer 1995 tour, these jams have an incredible level of focus and clarity. But they’re not jams to be taken lightly. They’re dense, heady. As Wade says, listening to Fall 1995 “is not a spectator sport.” Hope you’re geared up. The details for all 3 parts are below. As always, we ask you to follow us on Twitter and review us on iTunes. 02:37:28
This week we're joined by our good friend Brian (@sufferingjuke). He was inspired to go back and listen to the entire Fall 1996 tour, and he pulled together a wonderful collection of highlights from that tour. Brian put a ton of thought into this, and the product makes that very clear. Really wonderful highlights, and some lesser-known jams that he's bringing back into the spotlight. We've split this one up into 2 parts, because there's just too much great stuff. We think you'll enjoy, and as Brian has said, "you'll never look at '96 the same again." Episode 60: Fare Thee Well Recap Pt. 2
02:20:12
This week we're psyched to be recapping the Fare Thee Well shows from Chicago and Santa Clara. It's a really fun discussion with a lot of people who are vets of both Phish and the Grateful Dead: Scott (@TourTweet), Craig (@chillwig), Jonathan (@rowj) and Tanya (@fractalgal). We talk about this momentous, celebratory moment in Grateful Dead (and Phish) history, and play songs from both Chicago and Santa Clara. These shows were at the same time the end of an era, the joining together of two worlds, and a glimpse into the future. Regardless of your perspective, this was a historic and wonderful run of shows. Ep. 59 Pt. 1 - Summer 1995 Tweezers - 6.22.95
01:46:40
This week it's Brad and Jonathan, with special guest and friend Kevin. This week we'll be talking about 2 of the greatest improvisational vehicles in Phish history: this episode features the 6.22.95 Tweezer. Both this and last week's Tweezer (6.14.95) feature epic, meandering, maddening, soupy, wild, funky, rocking songs. These Tweezers helped to define the improvisation of the band at a time of transition and exploration. If you haven't heard either of these, you'll be surprised, moved and probably scared. Ep 57 Pt 1 -- Runaway Gin joins HF Pod
01:54:31
This week we are joined by Phish tribute band Runaway Gin. This is a unique and exciting episode of the podcast, the first time we feature something other than a Phish show—but still discuss and play the music of the band. Part 1 of the podcast features the music of Runaway Gin along with discussion with the band, and Part 2 features an awesome Phish jam pick from each of the band members. Excellent stuff. Episode 1 chapters below. We know Runaway Gin from Andy Greenberg, who many of you have heard on this show before. He and his bandmates Bobby, Fitz and John join us to talk about their relationships with Phish, what it's like to cover the music of a band you love, and much more. They'll also be playing this Summer in Chicago around the Fare Thee Well shows, so if you're going, check it out. Ep 55 Pt. 2 -- Phish 5.28.89
03:13:46
This week we are joined by our friend and guest host Jonathan, who brought us back to a wonderful show from 1989, from "Ian's House" (or "Ian's Party" at someone else's house). Either way, Ian was awesome. This show is historic, fun, and filled with really excellent playing. Trey's tone and precision in playing is just crisp, clear and on point, and as Jonathan pointed out, this is among the finest banter you'll ever hear in a Phish show. Very entertaining listen. But even more than entertaining, it's a reminder of how musically mature Phish was even by 1989—26 years ago. A great sounding show, taboot (taboot). This is part 2 of this episode. Here's Charlie Dirksen's review of the YEM. We mentioned Matt Burnham's Phish Hall of Fame voting project, check it out! 00:56:50

We chatted about 10.31.96, the Halloween show that of course included the cover of Remain in Light, by the Talking Heads. Here's an article that Steven wrote about Phish for Grantland, which is a great read. We got a lot of good feedback on the new format last week, and so we're going to continue to just include the guest conversation, and point you to PhishTracks, Phish On Demand App or Live Phish to listen to the epic Halloween album from 10.31.96. Instead of including the show audio in the podcast, we're going to point you to a few places where you can hear it (links below). Because there are so many ways to listen to shows these days, we wanted to save some bandwidth/file size and deliver the guest conversation while letting you listen to the music in whatever way works for you. Episode 41: Coventry 10 Years Later
00:45:05
This week, we wanted to revisit Coventry, 10 years later, but in a different way than we usually approach the podcast. From our perspective, the music was, for the most part, bad. So we're not playing any music from the weekend. You can hear it all via Phish On Demand or PhishTracks. (The Jibboo, Melt, AC/DC Bag and Reba are highlights for us.) But we wanted to share some personal memories, because it was a unique and great experience with the actual people we were with. I (RJ) had the luxury of being on vacation this summer with almost all of the friends who we were with at Coventry. One night on vacation, sitting around the table, we shared stories and recollections from that weekend. And 10 years later, we're at another peak, as is the band. So for this episode, Brad and I chat for a little while and then we share the conversation. As usual, please review us on iTunes and send comments and feedback to helpingfriendlypodcast at gmail dot com, and follow us on Twitter. And check out CashorTrade.org for face value tickets to shows across the country. Also the podcast is now available on Stitcher! If you're a Stitcher user, please give us a review. Look forward to the next episode, post Dicks!
