How To Be Fully Alive - Cara Bradley [168]
53:58

Hunter talks to Cara Bradley about How To Be Fully Alive.

Do you remember the last time you felt fully alive? My guest, Cara Bradley, describes this state as, “open, clear, bright, content.” This is, in fact, our natural state just underneath the busyness of our lives. This state of feeling fully alive makes us better parents, workers, and friends—and we can cultivate this in our daily lives.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. It’s important to remember what we felt like as kids
2. Our attention gets duller because we become preoccupied with performing
3. We can design our lives around flow and become more fully alive

Simplify in a Colorful Way - Jeannie Stith-Mawhinney [156]
54:17

Hunter talks to Jeannie Stith-Mawhinney about Simplify in a Colorful Way.

I had just gone out on a date night with my husband Bill a few years ago, and I talked to my new(ish) neighbor and friend about it the next day. She looked so put together, and I’d felt like a boring old mom on my date. I had been simplifying, but I was frustrated with my clothes. Turns out, she was able to REALLY help me, and I was there for the birth of a whole new thing.

Takeaways:

  1. Knowing “your” colors makes simplifying, shopping, and getting dressed way easier
  2.  Our clothing can add to our confidence or deplete it
  3. Fewer options makes life easier, so we can focus on what’s really important.

Jeannie Stith-Mawhinney is founder and CEO of Color Guru where she helps women discover their ideal color palette to highlight their natural beauty and simplify their wardrobes.  Jeannie is also the creator and teacher of the "Create Your Colorful Capsule Wardrobe" online course. She lives in colorful Arden, Delaware with her husband and two daughters.

How to Manage Kids' Anger - Dr. Laurie Hollman [150]
40:46

Hunter talks to Dr. Laurie Hollman about How to Manage Kids' Anger.

When our kids are angry — whether they’re a little one having tantrums, or an older child lashing out — it’s hugely distressing for us as parents. What’s wrong with our child? What’s wrong with me? We can think that our child is “bad,” if they’re angry all of the time, or that we’re failing. Instead, what Laurie Hollman tells us is that anger is a normal healthy emotion. In this episode, she shares her 5 steps for managing kids anger.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. You know more than you think you know.
2. When we experience our kids anger, we feel attacked.
3. Our job is to accept and tolerate our kids feelings so they can tolerate it too.

Laurie Hollman, Ph.D. is a psychoanalyst with specialized clinical training in infant-parent, child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy, a unique practice that covers the life span. She is particularly adept at helping parents and children relate well together in today’s complex family environment. She’s the author of the Busy Parent’s Guide to Managing Anger in Children and Teens and the Busy Parent’s Guide to Managing Anxiety in Children and Teens.

What do you do when you and your partner disagree about how to parent your children? You may be into peaceful parenting while your partner wants to punish. This question is posed to me all of the time, so I’m so thrilled to talk to Avital Schreiber, The Parenting Junkie, about it.

How to Let Our Kids Grow - Lenore Skenazy [140]
54:24

Hunter talks to Lenore Skenazy about How to Let Our Kids Grow.

Do you worry about giving your kids more independence? Well, protecting them too much might be doing more harm than good. In this episode I talk to Lenore Skenazy, author of Free Range Kids about her new Let Grow Movement and the vital importance of free play for our kids.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. We lose our perspective because of fear-mongering media stories
2. Keeping them always “safe” may be keeping them from growing strong, resilient, and emotionally balanced.
3. The best way to promote independence is if we all do it TOGETHER. Lenore has a great resource to do this!

Lenore Skenazy is president of the new non-profit Let Grow, and founder of the Free-Range Kids movement.

Ten years ago, after her column "Why I Let My 9 Year Old Ride the Subway Alone" landed her on every talk show from The Today Show to Dr. Phil,  Skenazy founded the book and blog “Free-Range Kids” to say that kids are NOT in constant danger. Give them a little more freedom and everyone wins.

Now she lectures internationally and has been profiled everywhere from The New York Times to The New Yorker  to The Daily  Show! A journalist herself, Lenore has written for everyone from The Wall Street Journal to Mad Magazine. Yep. Mad.

Her reality show “World’s Worst Mom,” airs on Discovery Life (from time to time, late at night, in re-runs).

In March, Utah became the first state to pass a "Free-Range Parenting Law," guaranteeing parents the right to give their kids some unsupervised time. The goal of Let Grow is to make it easy and normal to give kids back their independence.

A Yale grad, Lenore lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her sons have (safely) flown the coop.

How To Intuitively Eat & Love Your Body - Jenny Berk [126]
51:49

Hunter talks to Jenny Berk about How To Intuitively Eat & Love Your Body.

Today you get permission to throw away your scale and all the “rules” about eating. It’s time to tune into your inner wisdom for greater health and happiness.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. You can’t tell on the outside who struggles with food.
2. Why you should tune inward to your own wisdom rather than than listen to dieting experts.
3. Implications for parenting: It’s so natural to eat intuitively yet so foreign to many people because we’ve been indoctrinated at a young age to allow other people to tell us how to nourish ourselves.

How To Raise An Adult - Julie Lythcott-Haims [125]
56:10

Hunter talks to Julie Lythcott-Haims about How To Raise An Adult.

Are you undermining your child’s future by doing too much for them? Julie Lithcott-Haims shares with us the frightening consequences of over-parenting. She calls it the “checklisted childhood,” and it’s leaving a generation of kids who are anxious and overwhelmed by life. In this podcast we talk about how to avoid the overparenting trap.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. We’re overparenting from our love, our fear, and our ego. Our own sense of self is wrapped up in our kids’ accomplishments.
2. What matters most is that we love our children unconditional and give them chores.
3. The importance of our own self-fulfillment - “Why are you on the sidelines of another person’s life?”

Julie Lythcott-Haims believes in humans, and is interested in what prevents humans from thriving. Her writings and talks currently focus on overparenting, racism, and #adulting.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:

1. Meditation helps us meet the preciousness and fragility of life. It helps us work with change and impermanence.

3. Mindfulness helps with anxiety by interrupting the rumination - catastrophe cycle. Now you have more options to deal with it.

1. Everyone can experience the sacred dimension of practice no matter what your background is.

When Your Cosmic Egg Is Cracked - Cheryl Jones [113]
42:35

What do you do when you have little kids and your life falls apart? Cheryl Jones knows that answer to this question all too well. She discovered that her marriage was unravelling at at child's birthday party.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. Social conditioning has lead us not to recognize things in our life as loss. We have to acknowledge what the loss is. We tend to do that to “be strong” for our families. If we don’t acknowledge, it shows up somewhere else.
2. Self-care is not a “nice to have.”
3. How striving sucks the joy out of a day. Non-striving is an attitude of mindfulness - it’s about how we’re going about achieving our goals.

How to Make Time for Mindfulness - Hunter & Carla [112]
56:40

Hunter talks to Carla Naumburg about How to Make Time For Mindfulness

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. Meditation’s impact is dose-dependant. The more you do it, the more you experience the benefits.
2. Consistency is more important than time. What you do every day a little bit matters more than what you do once a week.
3. You can be creative about how you meditate! It can be lying down, in the car, and more.

Sometimes the biggest challenge in learning a new practice like meditation is figuring out how to fit it into your routine. We have those days when it is a feat to even have showered, let alone setting time aside to sit quietly and meditate.

How To Be A Scream Free Parent - Hal Runkel [110]
50:21

Be prepared to have the ground under your feet shifted by the powerful wisdom of Hal Runkel. He’ll question your basic beliefs and transform the way you think about parenting.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. The most damaging lie of parenting is that we are responsible FOR our children.
2. Kids are born to test us. Parenting asks us that we become grown ups and we do that by becoming less reactive and taking back the power over our emotional responses.
3. The mandate for self-care in the Christian and Hebrew traditions in “Love thy neighbor as you love thyself.” And the tough question that makes us really confront that.

Hal Runkel, Life, Love & Leadership Coach is the New York Times Bestselling Author of ScreamFree Parenting, helping parents create the family life they want most by learning to pause more and react less.

How To Be A Zen Parent - Todd & Cathy Adams [106]
49:59

Hunter talks to Todd & Cathy Adams about How To Be A Zen Parent.

Some big takeaways from this episode include:
1. The goal of zen parenting is not to pass your baggage down to your own children. Self-awareness/mindfulness helps you see what’s coming up in you in those challenging moments.
2. They value discussion over discipline. The goal in the long run is not to teach them to fear us. The goal is to raise adults. The most important thing is to have a connection and a relationship.
3. When our kids are young we need an acceptance of how hard it is, AND what are the things you can let go of? How can you simplify? The only way you can take care of people is to put yourself first.
4. “It is not your child’s job to make you happy.”

Todd and Cathy Adams are the hosts of the Zen Parenting Radio podcast. This is what they have to say about themselves, “We are married with three daughters. We teach self-awareness. We connect through pop culture. We believe in humor & mindfulness. We know people can be a force for good. We are Zen Parenting Radio. Learn more about them at ZenParentingRadio.com.

Shauna Shapiro - Mindful Discipline & Kindness [100]
55:42

How can we create family relationships that weather any storm? Dr. Shauna Shapiro explains how our old paradigms of parenting get it wrong, and research-proven ways to become a mindful mama.

Some important takeaways from this conversation:

  1. “What you practice grows stronger.” If we practice judgement, we become more judgmental. If we practice kindness, we strengthen hat. We know that with neuroplasticity, our repeated experiences shape the brain.
  2. Shame actually prevents us from making the changes that we want to make. Instead, kindness releases dopamine and turns ON the learning centers of the brain, activating us for change.
  3. As a parent, you can be in your sovereignty and power, hold boundaries, and keep a soft heart.

Shauna Shapiro, PhD, is a professor, author, and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness and compassion. Dr. Shapiro has published over 100 journal articles and book chapters, and co-authored the critically acclaimed texts, The Art and Science of Mindfulness, and Mindful Discipline. Her 2017 TEDx talk is rated one of the top 10 TED-talks on Mindfulness.

What To Do When You're Squeezed [99]
31:41

Life regularly squeezes us. No matter how much we try to avoid or block out the difficult moments, they're inevitable. That's just life.

The real question is, how do we respond to those moments?

Do you shame and blame yourself with harsh words?

Or do you offer yourself compassion, understanding, and kindness?

This episode is a very special one taken from a live talk I did last October at the Mindful Mom Revolution event.

Kimberly Johnson - Healing, Balancing and Restoring Post-Childbirth [97]
51:30

Hunter talks to Kimberly Johnson about healing, balancing and restoring post-childbirth.

Hunter’s big takeaways from this episode:

  1. There are big problems with the way we handle birth and the post-partum period that are leading to long-term problems for moms.
  2. We have unrealistic expectations about 4th trimester; healing is slow. We treat it like it’s any other time. We don’t understand that there are specific needs.
  3. There are 5 universal needs and these are necessities not luxuries:
    1. Rest - deep, extended rest 30-45 days lying in period
    2. Nourishing food
    3. Loving touch
    4. Companionship of wise women
    5. Contact with nature

Conscious Dads - Jon Vroman & The Front Row Factor [96]
01:06:24

Yes, I cried a little in this conversation, but more than that, I was inspired by talking to Jon Vroman about his work with the Front Row Factor and helping to make dads more conscious.

Three big takeaways from this conversation were:

  1. The power of dedicating your life to making a difference - as Jon says, choosing our experience.
  2. The power of reminders and intimacy with death. We have 936 weekends from when your child is 0-18 years old- every one that goes by is a weekend you won’t have again.
  3. His experience of fatherhood and how to step up, deal with anger, and model the kind of life you want your kids to live

Jon Vroman inspires others to Live Life In The Front Row™ by teaching the art of moment making. He is an award-winning speaker, #1 bestselling author of The Front Row Factor, podcast host and founder of Front Row Foundation, a charity creating front row experiences for individuals who brave life-threatening illnesses.

5 Steps To Equanimity [94]
34:54

After being in the car for hours on our drive home from visiting family for Thanksgiving, we got stuck in traffic during the last 15 miles home. I was driving, feeling totally done, more than ready to be home. The girls were understandably irritable. It was not a great scene.

Yet, out the window was the most beautiful sunset. It was breathtaking -- a pink and red epic experience. It was utterly breathtaking.

Both were happening at the same time - our suffering, and this incomprehensible beauty.

Noticing and appreciating this sunset was a conscious practice in that moment.

It's the same with  our own equanimity - it's a conscious practice.

Here are the five steps that I discuss in detail in this episode:

  1. Practice meditation regularly.
  2. Cultivate the conditions for happiness.
  3. Notice your thoughts and feelings with curiosity.
  4. Interrupt the harmful thoughts.
  5. Rest in your feelings and feel them fully.

Rinse and repeat.

I hope this episode has helped you my friend! If so, I'd really appreciate your feedback. Click here to leave me a voicemail!

Happiness Is Other People with Carla Naumburg [93]
49:37

In her editorial,Happiness is Other People, Ruth Whippman (@ruthwhippman ‏) says that, "The most significant thing we can do for our well-being is not to 'find ourselves' or 'go within.' It’s to invest as much time and effort as we can into nurturing the relationships we have with the people in our lives."

Hunter and Carla discuss this idea. Some topics covered:

Can we control our feelings? Or do we create the conditions for happiness?

Do you need more social time? What kind of interactions work best for you?

How To Bring Peace To The Table With Your Family [92]
37:56

We focus on the food, but it’s the relationships that bring us together. Yet, gathering with our families is not always all we’d hope it would be.

Many of us come from families with a lot of suffering. Certain relationships tend to cause a lot of suffering in us. Peace is not always served at our tables.

It can be a stressful time to say the least.

But it doesn’t have to be. We have enormous power to change the dynamic. We can participate in the status quo or we can become part of the change.

How do you prepare for an experience with your relatives? Do you get anxious? Do you focus your thoughts on what you don’t like about them? In other words, do you expect a bad experience? If you do, you are probably not disappointed.

When we focus all of our energy on what we don’t like, we find little that we do.

The good news is that we can change our experience by changing ourselves.

The first thing that we have to realize is that we are responsible for our own emotions. Your frustration comes from inside of you. The same experience doesn’t have to leave you suffering. You can choose how you would like to be with your family.

How do we choose? Mindfulness practices give us room to make change. And changing our mindset is a huge part of it.

6 Steps for Bringing Peace to the Table...

Teaching Well-being & Resilience to Kids - Renee Jain [90]
49:51

Why don't we teach every child how to deal with challenges? How to process their feelings?

For my latest podcast guest, Renee Jain, all her work started with those questions.

We are in an epidemic of anxiety now - for both kids and adults. That's one of the reasons I was so happy to meet someone who was bringing this important work straight to kids.

Renee talked to me about the science of wellbeing. We talked about the exciting research on our brain's plasticity - meaning that we can change our set-point or disposition. We can change. And importantly, we can teach our kids that they can change too!

We talked about the purpose of emotions, and how important it is to teach that. We talk about the influence of technology.

And so much more...

Renee Jain specializes in cultivating skills of resilience in both adults and children. Renee’s gift is taking research-based concepts and transforming them into engaging and digestible learning modules. For children, she has created one-of-a-kind programs found at GoZen! to teach life skills via digital animation.

How To Care For Highly Sensitive Children - Melissa Schwartz [88]
59:44

Does your child sometimes feel like a ticking time bomb? Ready to explode at any moment?

That's how it was for me with my oldest daughter. It seemed like almost everything caused her some kind of distress. She was SO attuned to my moods; we had to cut out all of the tags in her clothes; and if she missed a nap? Forget it, we were doomed.

There was SO much to learn. There were so many skills I didn't have!

I later realized that Maggie is a Highly Sensitive Child. And I realized that someone else was Highly Sensitive too (can you guess who that is?).

On this episode, I talk to Melissa Schwartz, expert on Highly Sensitive Children and how to take care of them.

What is your takeaway? Click here to start the conversation!

Melissa is a respected expert in the field of Highly Sensitive Children and brings clarity, personal experience and compassion for parents raising HSCs so they can thrive in a de-sensitized world. Find out more about Melissa's work at Leading Edge Parenting

The Science of Self-Compassion - Kristen Neff [84]
41:37

What do you say to yourself when you mess up with your kids? If you are like many of us, you berate yourself.

My guest, Kristin Neff, has done the research that shows that our harsh self-criticism does NOT work. It doesn't help us grow and become better parents. In fact, it does the opposite.

So what does work? Self-compassion.

Kristin Neff is a pioneer in the field of self-compassion research, conducting the first empirical studies on self-compassion over a decade ago. In conjunction with her colleague Dr. Chris Germer, she has developed an empirically supported eight-week training program called Mindful Self-Compassion, and offers workshops on self-compassion worldwide.

The Mindful Mama Manifesto [83]
30:46

I know that the tools and teachings that I've immersed my life in are life-changing. Mindfulness, self-compassion, and skillful communication have transformed my life and the lives of millions around the world.

They are research-proven, powerful tools.

But it's more than just the tools. It's a change in the way we approach the world and life itself. I took the time to think about that recently and I realized that this shift in mindset should have a rallying cry.

So I've created the MINDFUL MAMA MANIFESTO!

Dharma Mama - Leslie Davis [79]
01:01:59

“To become a mother is to enter a dharma door.” What does that mean? It means that the experience of parenting is a teaching, or a path to awakening, and I absolutely believe that. In this episode of the podcast, I talk to Leslie Davis of Dharma Mamas, a blog and online community for mindful mothers.

Leslie and I share a spiritual tradition in that we follow the teachings of mindfulness from zen master and peacemaker, Thich Nhat Hanh.

Some highlights from the conversation:

  • Being there for our children when we don’t want to be there for them.
  • Getting support as mothers
  • Dealing with feelings of unworthiness
  • It's never to late to begin anew

You can find out more about Leslie Davis at Dharmamamas.com or her personal blog, Heartlunge.com.

It's Not About You, It's All About You [78]
24:20

Poolside, about a month ago, I had a conversation with a couple of cool mamas in my neighborhood. I'm not sure we had ever discussed parenting before. One mom mentioned that her greatest realization in parenting was this:

It's not about you.

What does that mean? It means that our kids will have problems, moods, etc. that are not about you. Your job is not to fix every single one of your kid's problems. Refreshing, isn't that?

But also...it's all about you.

How so if it's not about you? What I want to point out here is that parenting is NOT about fixing your kids. Generally, we do far too much "molding," "shaping," and "teaching." Instead, it's about you - about regulating your own reactions and triggers.

The 5 Rules of Parenting...Really? [77]
01:03:49

What are the 5 rules of parenting? In this episode, Carla Naumburg and I talk about the article, The 5 Rules of Parenting by Mike Troiano. After 54 collective years of parenting, does Mike have all the answers? Yes, and no. There are things we really agree with, and things don't.

My three big takeaways from our conversation were:

  1. You need support at the baby stage
  2. Should your toddlers fear you? No!
  3. Parenting is about the long game, and strong relationships are paramount

And listen for mine and Carla's parenting wins and fails!

We also mentioned Ron Leiber’s The Opposite of Spoiled and Fam Zoo.

Family Mindfulness Retreat [76]
53:41

Family mindfulness retreat? Yes, it exists! Earlier this summer, my two girls, husband, and I packed ourselves off to a quiet mountain in New York for a week of no phones, no wifi, no screens, no alcohol, no meat...and it was actually fun! In this episode, I tell you all about it.

Around 200 people were there, interested in living mindfully, including tons of children and teens. As adults, we had lots of meditation time, and our children learned mindfulness practices too.

Would this be right for your family? Listen to find out!

Simplicity Parenting - Kim Payne [74]
01:01:40

Did you know that highly stressed western children looked just like war refugee children in terms of stress? In this episode, I talk to Kim Payne, author of Simplicity Parenting. We talk about "the undeclared war on childhood,” and how our culture of too much too fast, too young, is overwhelming our kids.

Learn how simplifying you and your child's stuff and environment will bring more ease to your lives. Take back your kid's childhood from the  “molded plastic tsunami” of toys and too much screen time.  Did you know that brothers and sisters often play together better with fewer toys - why? Find out how to activate their innate neurology to foster more cooperation and collaboration.

Kim Payne offers a very different image of screen time than our recent guest, Deborah Heitner. He points out that studies show screens damage brains. Instead, Kim is pro nature, pro family connection, pro REAL friends -- and these take time and are slow. I really connected to our discussion of "connection to self" - feeling comfortable in your own skin, and knowing your own values as opposed to pop values.

About Kim: Kim John Payne, M.ED has been passionately working to thousands of people give voice to the feeling that something is not okay about the new normal of overwhelm that so many people are now experiencing. He offers do-able ways to build deep connections with our children that gives families resiliency and simple joy. Find out more about Simplicity Parenting and Kim here at SimplicityParenting.com.

Vacation Mind [73]
26:56

What is vacation mind? In this episode of the podcast, I discuss this idea as presented by Leo Babuta in his Zen Habits post, The Practice of Work Mind & Vacation Mind, Simultaneously. He defines it: "Vacation mind lets that anxiety go, and is just present in the current moment. Time is less important, enjoying yourself is the priority."

So how do we do that in parenting? In everyday life?

I'd love to know your takeaways from this solo episode. How can you practice more vacation mind in your life? Start the conversation in the comments

Self-Care Isn't Selfish, It's Your Responsibility [70]
19:00

In the 90s Oprah had a life coach on who said something that shocked her studio audience of suburban moms.

She had asked the audience to make a list of all the priorities in their lives.
Then she asked, “Where are you on that list?”
Lots of the audience did not have themselves on the list at all.

Then she made her outrageous suggestion:
“You should be the #1 priority on your list.”

The audience booed. Oprah said, “Hold on,” and asked them why they booed.
Oprah said, “It doesn’t mean that others are kicked off your list when you put yourself first.”

We’ve come a long way since then.
Or have we?

If you made a list of priorities, who would be on your list?
Where would you be on your list?

Many moms tell me that taking care of themselves is not a priority.
If you are really honest with yourself, is that you?

The thing is, if you are not #1 on your list, you’re realizing a fundamental truth:

You cannot give what you do not have.

If you are not taking care of you, you are gyping your children and your family. You are offering them a second-rate version of you.
And you are role-modeling a life of “not worthy.”

Making yourself a priority isn’t selfish. In fact, it’s the opposite.
It’s called taking responsibility.

Worried About The Long Days Of Summer? [69]
31:40

School ends soon and summer will officially begin around here. In the past, this triggered anxiety for me. What would we do all day? How do we get through the long days of summer?

This is the same feeling that leads many to put their kids into camp after camp, activity after activity. Downtime is like an enemy to be conquered.

In my house, we aren’t worried about hearing “I’m bored” anymore. In fact, I don’t hear it very often because my girls are so used to having unstructured time to follow their own imagination.

Now, I’m not afraid of “I’m bored,” but I used to be.

My anxiety over my daughter’s outbursts and volatile emotions used to make me really worry about the long days of summer.

My fear led me to follow my habitual reaction of trying to control things more. I needed to shape and structure the day so that I could keep my anxiety at bay. It was a struggle.

Do we suffer from our circumstances, or from wanting it to be otherwise?

The Buddha taught that most of our suffering is caused by grasping at things in an impermanent world. Both the Buddha and Patanjali’s yoga sutra’s teach that the path to liberation involves letting go of our grasping - letting go of wanting things to be other than they are.

This podcast shares 6 tips on how to get through the long days of summer - in a deeper way.
