198-But it's your family, Dr Sherrie Campbell joins me to talk about her new book!
51:45

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Joining the podcast is Sherrie Campbell, the author of But It’s Your Family...Cutting Ties with Toxic Family Members and Loving Yourself in the Aftermath. Toxic family abuse is always two-fold. The first layer of abuse is the original poor treatment by toxic family members, and the second is someone’s denial of the ways in which abusers treat and harm them. Loving someone doesn’t always mean having a relationship with them, just like forgiveness doesn’t always mean reconciliation. A significant part of healing comes with accepting that there are some relationships that are so poisonous that they destroy one’s ability to be healthy and function best. But It’s Your Family is a remarkable account of what it means to cut ties to toxic family abuse and thrive in the aftermath.

Sherrie shares her personal story, and then we take a deep dive into the topic of what it’s like to have a toxic person in your life, and how to break free!

Episode 197-Parental Alienation with expert Wendy Perry
45:42

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

After enduring what has been called “the worst known case of parental alienation and the most corrupt family court case in the history of Tarrant County Texas” Wendy became motivated to break the silence about parental alienation.  In 2014, Wendy’s court case was featured in the critically acclaimed documentary Divorce Corp. She has not stopped fighting for the rights of alienated parents since. Wendy’s passions and strengths include giving educational presentations to the public and professionals, giving TV and radio interviews, giving support to targeted and alienated parents as well as conference and event planning.  Whether it’s experts or advocates or families, one of Wendy’s gifts is bringing people together for awareness, education and support.

She joins us for a second time to discuss her personal story, as well as what we can all do to help bring awareness to parental alienation.

"Parental Alienation can happen to ANYONE so it should matter to EVERYONE!"

48:29

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

The debt crisis is real and is affecting millions of Americans. Those of us in blended families often incur more debt, whether from expensive divorces, child support, or additional children to raise. Sadly, most Americans don’t even have $400 saved up for an emergency! It saddens me to see so many people hurting, which is why I choose to partner up with Debtmerica, a leading company in the debt relief space. Charles Hughes and Tony Gaeta join me on the show to discuss the debt problem, and how they help families get out from underneath it. In this show we talk about

  • Their own personal story of how they ended up in their current career
  • The debt crisis in our country
  • Children and credit
  • Different options for handling debt
  • The Debtmerica solution
  • Their tax relief program
  • And much more!

178-Josh Zepess, World Financial Group, and my new career!
22:33

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Josh is a corporate America escapee who, after 20 years successfully climbing the ladder as a design engineer and manager, realized that it was leaning on the wrong wall.  He first realized that his 401k he believed in so much wasn't going to retire him no matter what he did. After feeling misled about money, he started looking around and saw that he had spent years working really hard making his employer a lot of money yet had little to show for it.

He traversed through the gym industry, franchises, and other things before finding a home in WFG.  His passion to help others, the desire to get paid what he was worth, and build a business he could be proud of was fulfilled with this company.  He is now looking to build the Starbucks of financial services across the southeast. He truly believes that no family should be left behind when it comes to money.

In this interview, he joins us to talk about World Financial Group, and why we both are a part of it! We also discuss

  • What World Financial Group is, and how we are helping people
  • What types of services World Financial Group offers
  • How World Financial Group educates our clients
  • What sets World Financial Group apart from other financial services
  • How World Financial Group helps people solve challenges
  • What can parents do to help their children have a better financial future
  • And much more

18:02

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

I answer some listener questions today from our private facebook group!

First, a stepmom dealing with a high conflict bio mom who wants to tell her how to run her household. Then, a stepmom who loves her role, but is being made to feel like she is overstepping. And last, a bio mom who is interfering with a stepmoms plan for bedroom arrangements for her kids. Maybe some of you can relate with the challenges these stepmoms face!

Blended families require a lot of balance. Many parents struggle because they don’t know which should come first, their relationship with their partner, or their children. There are different factors you can look at, but ultimately, the attention you spend both on your partner and your kids needs to be carefully managed. You will also find that this balance can shift around over the years at different stages of your children's lives.

162-When a Biological Parent is Absent
19:30

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

There are many reasons why a family may find themselves in the position of raising a child without the other biological parent. There could be a death, therefore leaving someone a widow or widower, left to raise their kids alone. Unfortunately, there are lots of absent parents out there because those parents have made a choice to abandon their kids, leaving the other parent to pick up the pieces. There are parents who are serving time in jail. Others who serve in the military. Then there are others who live out of state, so perhaps they are involved, but only minimally. Regardless of the cause, the children can suffer greatly. There are ways to help a child through this, as well as ways to cope as the sole parent.

160-Valentines Special, with Erik Newton of Together
40:29

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Erik Newton is a former family law attorney who describes himself as someone who’s “been through a thousand divorces and still believes in love.” Ushering couples through divorce wasn’t easy for Erik, a romantic from birth, but it turned out to be the ideal medium through which to understand the entire life cycle of a relationship. As a result, Erik has a unique, real-world comprehension of what makes one marriage thrive and another fall apart.

During his time as an attorney, Erik racked up a few accolades: He founded a successful law journal, built the largest and fastest-growing family law firm in the Bay Area, and was named a Super Lawyer three years running. He also teamed up with a psychologist friend to lead premarital courses for couples, hoping to give them the skills they’d need to stay out of his office. Ultimately, his calling to help couples build healthy relationships superseded his legal career, and he decided to dedicate himself full-time to creating a place couples could go for information, inspiration, and a big dose of truth. That’s when Together was born.

Erik joins me to talk about

  • His personal story
  • His business, Together, and it’s mission
  • The “work” involved in relationships
  • His experiences working with couples over the years
  • His own relationship
  • And much more

  • Work on better communication
  • Treat your relationship with the ex as a business transaction
  • Seek help from your ex's family members or friends
  • Respond without reacting
  • Don't fight back
  • Don't seek revenge
  • Don't use the kids as messengers

141-Storm update, and a special song by Songfinch!
10:08

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Because of hurricane Irma, there is not a topic this week. My family and I have been preparing for this storm, as it is threatening to hit my state of Florida.

In the meantime, listen to my special song by songfinch, that was created for my bonus children! See the lyrics below!

Sometimes reminiscing

Feels like yesterday to me

When you met 10 years ago

With your dad at Mikkey D's

And since then you've gotten close

Happy she could watch you grow

She could say she loves you both

But then you already know

Already know, no love is lost

From 2 young kids to young adults

The whole time with you has been awesome

Wouldn't trade it for a second

It's a blessing

When she step into the house and see you all

Always know that you can call

Anytime you need to talk

So she can say she proud of both of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Now Shawnie is sincere

A good heart that makes you cheer

He loves music, he loves football

Pick a concert he'll appear

And he looks just like his dad

Makes you smile from ear to ear

Your stepmoms your biggest fan

Just in case that wasn't clear

Madison she's super driven

Super strong, in it to win it

A competitive cheerleader

No one's better

When she goes for something

Both got hearts of gold

And their talents all their own

Your stepmom loves how you've grown

And turned the house into a home

Here's her way to say she's proud of you

She think your the bomb, bomb, bomb

Glad to be your second mom, mom, mom

Honestly she just gets glad again

Heart so full of love

She had somebody write some raps

To send to Shawnie and to Madison

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

When you came in my life

That's when it changed for me

And I love you so much

So glad that I could be in your life

Promise you could count on me

But you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

Yeah, you both already know it

This right here's a bonus song

  1. The length of your relationship

  3. The ages of your kids
  4. The relationship between the stepkids
  5. How well do you and your partner co parent
  6. How do the kids feel about the situation
  7. What is your value on a stress free and peaceful life
  8. What is the difference in expenses from one home to two
  9. Shared care of living together opposed to caring for children alone
  10. What is your ideal family vision

118-tips for better communication with your ex
23:10

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Most divorced couples lack great communication skills, which makes co parenting much harder than it needs to be. Healthy communication with your ex creates a peaceful environment for your children, and also sets a great example for them that they will model when they grow up.

My 15 tips for better communication with your ex are

  1. Never use the kids as a go between
  2. Never argue in front of the kids
  3. Learn to pick and choose your battles
  4. Avoid being sarcastic, disrespectful, and rude
  5. Set boundaries, and stick to them
  6. Don't bring up the past when communicating
  7. Practice empathy
  8. Treat your ex the way you want to be treated
  9. Put your children first
  10. Texting and email should be your chosen method of communication
  11. Choose your words carefully
  12. Monitor your tone
  13. Avoid topics that will trigger your ex
  14. Learn to listen
  15. Learn to compromise

117-Speaking positivity into our children
12:34

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Our children get enough negativity in the outside world. At home, we need to counteract that by building them up. A healthy self esteem is so important for children to have, and it is our job as parents to help them have a positive self image. We can change their story, and teach them how to change their own. Some ideas to help are

  • Notice when they do something right
  • Tell them you are proud of them
  • Compliment them every day
  • Tell them they are beautiful

Based on her educational training, study of neuroscience, and lessons learned from her own journey, she has successfully used this program since 2007 to help her clients break free from the past and move on with their lives.

Rachel holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology. She provides a compassionate and challenging approach for her clients while using coaching as opposed to therapeutic models. She is also a member of San Francisco Coaches and Survivor Force CSA.

In this interview, we discuss

  • What impact a survivor's abuse can have on their blended family
  • Her program, book, and podcast
  • Signs to look for to determine if our own child is being abused

115-When an ex tells stories about you
21:11

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

It’s hard enough dealing with divorce as it is. When you have an ex who makes it harder by telling stories about you, it can seem unbearable. Especially when it results in your children or other people turning against you. Unfortunately we cannot control others or what they do, but we can learn how to cope, to save our sanity.

21:41

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

One of the issues many stepparents face, is the inability to really love their stepchild. It’s rarely spoken of, as those who feel that way are ashamed to admit it. After tons of emails from listeners who struggle with this, it’s evident that this is an issue that people really need help with. In this show, you’ll learn how to deal with these feelings, how to determine where they are coming from, and how to understand things from your step child's point of view. Plus some tips and ideas to work on that relationship for the benefit of the entire blended family.

113-Three types of intimacy you need in your relationship
19:39

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Intimacy is an essential part of every relationship. Parents can be so caught up with raising children, that they allow the intimacy to fall away. There are three important elements of intimacy in a romantic relationship, which are sexual, emotional, and physical. All three are important and a couple should learn how to create a balance of all three.

111-Attitude is everything
19:54

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Maintaining a good attitude in a blended family is something that is difficult, but not impossible. Bad attitudes can trickle down to everyone in the family, so it’s very important to learn how to manage our own. We also need to help our children manage their attitudes. There are some way to help you lift yourself up out of a bad state of mind, such as breathing, stopping the negative self talk, or finding something to do that brings you joy. My favorite tool is the emotional scale, a tool I learned from Esther and Jerry Hicks, from the book Ask and it is Given. You find where you fall on the scale at any given moment, and you try to gradually climb higher. Below is the scale for your use.  I’ll also talk about some tips that will help you deal with others who are having bad attitudes around you, so that you can remain peaceful.

  1. Joy/Appreciation/Empowered/Freedom/Love
  2. Passion
  3. Enthusiasm/Eagerness/Happiness
  4. Positive Expectation/Belief
  5. Optimism
  6. Hopefulness
  7. Contentment
  8. Boredom
  9. Pessimism
  10. Frustration/Irritation/Impatience
  11. Overwhelment
  12. Disappointment
  13. Doubt
  14. Worry
  15. Blame
  16. Discouragement
  17. Anger
  18. Revenge
  19. Hatred/Rage
  20. Jealousy
  21. Insecurity/Guilt/Unworthiness
  22. Fear/Grief/Depression/Despair/Powerlessness

108-Dealing with Overwhelm
17:36

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Many blended families cause feelings of overwhelm. Not only are blended families more complex, there is usually so much more to do and handle. In addition, many of the challenges blended families face add to the overwhelm. Although these feelings are magnified during the holiday season, they really can carry on all year long. My top ten tips to deal with overwhelm are

  1. Get in the present moment
  2. Put it all down on paper
  3. Only handle what you can
  4. Meditate
  5. Learn to say no
  6. Tame your inner perfectionist
  7. Let go of control
  8. Take a break
  9. Do some breathing exercises
  1.     Quit judging yourself

101-Ten Ways to boost your child's self esteem!
22:58

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Many children suffer from low self esteem. As parents, it is our job to recognize these signs, and help our kids develop a better sense of self worth. My ten ways to help are

  1. Give positive reinforcement
  2. Compliment them often
  3. Allow them choices
  4. Put them in a sport or hobby
  5. Give them responsibilities
  6. Help them set goals
  7. Work on your own self esteem issues
  8. Help them with their self dialogue
  9. Teach them about mistakes
  10. Show unconditional love

And a few things NOT to do are

  • Do NOT do everything for them
  • Do NOT compare them to others
  • Do NOT name call

She hopes that her stories will foster and strengthen relationships within the home.

In life, there are givers and takers. When we deal with takers, we often feel like they drain our energy. We feel frustrated with their lack of concern for our own needs and wants. Sometimes takers naturally gravitate towards us because we are givers. What should you do if you are dealing with a taker in your life, or in your blended family?

96-Encountering setbacks in the blended family
16:33

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Setbacks are a part of life, but when they affect our blended family, they can feel insurmountable. This week, I have 5 tips to help you overcome setbacks with ease.

  1. Accept and acknowledge the issue
  2. Dont place blame
  3. Find your strength
  4. Give it time
  5. Find what you can learn from the experience

Also enjoy some motivational quotes on overcoming setbacks!

It doesn’t get easier you just get stronger

I don’t pay attention to the world ending. It has ended many times and began again in the morning

One small crack does not mean you’re broken, it means you were put to the test and you did not fall apart

It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light

Go as long as you can, and then take another step.

95-When people make us uncomfortable
17:33

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Oftentimes, people can make us uncomfortable when it comes to their reactions to our blended families. Strangers can approach us with questions or stares. Simple outings to a park or restaurant can prompt reactions from others. Other times, an ex or even in laws can make us feel uncomfortable too. Some of this just comes with being part of a blended family, but we still need to know how to manage it, and how to not take it personally.

In blended families, it’s common to be concerned about how all of the children will influence one another. Even though this is normal behavior, you still want to control it, because bad habits are not what we want our children picking up.

Also, listen in on our first family interview, where we learn more about one of our listeners and their blended family. This week we feature Debbie Harmon. If you are interested in participating in one of these interviews, please email me for more information.

It’s not discussed as often, but many blended families struggle with issues pertaining to their adult children. 84-Don't focus on what you cannot change!
13:44

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

There are things in our lives and blended families that frustrate us. Some of these things we have power to change, but many we do not. There’s no sense in focusing attention to the things we have no control over. In this episode I give you a simple exercise to help you determine what deserves your attention, and what doesn’t.

Create a master list of everything in your life that you you wish you could change or improve.

Then each item gets placed on one of three lists titled:

  1. Things I can change
  2. Things I might be able to change
  3. Things I cannot change

On the first two lists, write action steps for each item. These are things you can do to improve or change the situation. Then you implement those action steps in your life to create change!

The last list, you are going to put away, and drive all of your focus away from it. Focus all of your energy on the positive and on what you have the power to make better!

Dealing with conflict is a life skill that has less to do with resolving the problem, and more to do with how we handle it. Sometimes we can fix things, but when we can’t, we need to know how to cope and live our life. We can’t control others, only ourselves and how we deal with things. Blended families can be full of conflict, especially when dealing with exes. Learn some ways to manage conflict  in this episode.

78-Fixing Past Mistakes in the Blended Family
19:51

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

We all make mistakes in blended families, and it’s important to learn how to grow and move past them. It’s never too late to start over. Some common mistakes we make in our family relationships are

  • Thinking you’re always right
  • Trying to change someone
  • Pleasing others at the expense of yourself
  • Expecting others to know what we want
  • Not managing anger
  • Not giving ourselves time
  • Neglecting relationships
  • Feeling guilty

Three steps for successfully fixing a mistake are

  1. Acknowledge the mistake
  2. Apologize for the mistake
  3. Learn and grow from the mistake

Abuse can be very damaging to a blended family, because there are more lives at stake. Instead of worrying about one family, we now have two we have to be concerned about. There are different types of abuse, which are physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual.

There are many factors that determine why people become abusers, and why others become victims. Getting help is essential in order to live a happy peaceful life, and to ensure that your kids live a happy life as well.

73-Perspective of a child in a blended family
20:00

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Back in September we did the perspective series, a month long series focusing on the perspective of people in the blended family. However, we never took into account the perspective of a child in the blended family home. Oftentimes we overlook a child’s feelings because we are too busy worrying about our own relationship and situation. Some common feelings a child may experience while being part of a divorce or a blended family are

  • Feeling like a divorce is their fault
  • Wanting to know what really happened (why did my parents get divorced?)
  • Wondering why their parent is acting different
  • Wondering or hoping their parents will get back together
  • Feeling like they will be replaced by their new stepparent or step siblings
  • Struggling with feelings of not liking their new stepparent or step siblings
  • Feeling like they are not getting enough attention
  • Feeling like they don't have a say in anything that is happening in their life

70-Be a supportive partner
21:16

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

It’s essential to be supportive to you partner in any relationship, but it’s needed even more in a blended family. There are four key areas where support is important, which are parenting, work, lifestyle, and personal development.

Parenting

Always backup your partner and be their teammate

Support them emotionally through painful parenting moments

Help with general parenting responsibilities

Work and business life

Get interested in your partner's work

Be emotionally supportive if they’ve had a tough day

Be supportive of work relationships

Lifestyle

Encourage and support activities or hobbies that bring your partner joy

Be supportive of outside friendships

Don’t get jealous of their friends

Personal Growth

Encourage them when they succeed

Help to hold them accountable

Don’t  point out their failures

Don’t try to derail them

Aside from this, it’s also a good idea to be a supportive stepparent and a supportive co parent to the ex, or other bio parent.

68- Sex Positivity Part 2-Children and their sexual identity
22:03

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Many adolescents struggle with their sexual identity.  If they identify as bisexual, lesbian, gay, or transexual, it can be much easier for them if they come from a home that is sex positive.

Blended families can be harder for a child to reveal their sexual identity to, as there are more people involved, each whom may have a differing opinion. It’s important for the entire family to come together and support the child in the coming out process.

Do you have a home that is sex positive? Do you even know what that means? Raising children comes with lots of questions, especially when it comes to sex. How much are we supposed to say? Should we tell the truth? We are living in quite a different world now than when we were young. Homes that are blended have a bit more of a challenge, as both sides need to decide what is right for their family. There are many benefits to being a sex positive parent, and many ways in which you can achieve it!

Jealousy is a normal human emotion, but sometimes it can interfere with our relationships. It is very common in the blended family to struggle with feelings of jealousy when it comes to your partner's ex spouse or their children. Some common types of jealousy blended families face are

  • overall jealousy of spouse regarding trust

In this episode I break those down for you in hopes to help you overcome them.

There are also 5 helpful tips to remember when trying to overcome jealousy

  1. trust and believe in your partner
  2. understand that jealousy comes from within

53-Helping a child through the loss of a parent
18:41

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Helping a child through the loss of a parent can be very difficult. There are many things you can do to help support your child/children through a traumatic loss like this, such as

  • keep your personal feelings out of it
  • don't speak negatively about the parent who has passed
  • get the child therapy
  • communicate with the child
  • don't rush the child
  • make a memorial space for the child in their room
  • keep your child active
  • talk to their teachers at school
  • keep the child’s life as stable as possible
  • teach the stepsiblings proper behavior
  • making sure the stepparent plays an active role

Understand that the death of your child’s other parent is not only going to impact your child, but your life as well, and every member of your blended family. Your spare time, financial situation, and your responsibilities will be altered. This is a hard life lesson, but with an entire family's support, a child can still thrive.

48-Create Confident Kids with Marty Ward
33:06

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Marty L Ward is championing the movement to Create Confident Kids. When a 10 yr old little girl hung herself rather than face the bully back in 2011, Marty said, “ENOUGH!” Despite all our school regulations and “Anti-Bullying” and “Stop Bullying” campaigns, 4,400 students commit suicide each year, and 160,000 are absent every day due to fear of confronting the bully. Fed up with the rising statistics, Marty looked for an answer. Influenced by leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, and Mother Theresa, Marty designed a Create Confident Kids to Eliminate Bullying Program with a whole new twist: it focuses on what we do want – Confident Kids – rather than on what we don’t want – more bullying.

In this interview, we talk about

  • Marty’s story
  • why bullying is so prevalent today
  • bullying in the blended family
  • signs to look for to see if your child is being bullied
  • how to help a child who is being bullied
  • what to do if your child is a bully
  • Marty’s Create Confident Kids program, and why it works
  • Bullying workshops

41-Establishing boundaries in the blended family
22:28

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Setting proper boundaries is essential in the blended family home. Everyone needs to know what is acceptable and what is not in order to maintain some kind of peace in the home. Some tips on setting boundaries include doing so from the beginning, holding family meetings, and practicing good communication.

If you’re wondering who needs boundaries, well everyone. Though you will find the most necessary boundaries are set with the children, the ex spouses, and the in laws (or ex in laws).  Each of those types require different types of boundaries, and they are unique to your family. The happiness of the family and especially the children lies in practicing this boundary setting often!

Family Contracts can be very helpful in the blended family. When children move from home to home, behavior and rules can get a little out of control. Contracts can help get everyone on the same page. There are many different types of contracts that you can draw up, depending on the child and what their specific needs are. Some examples are a cell phone contract, a driving contract, a behavioral contract, or a chore/reward contract. Listen to the show for details on exactly how to be successful using this method.

36-Teens and Social Media
19:14

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

These days our children are exposed to more than they should be, and most exposure is due to social media. Teenagers spend the majority of their time with their faces buried in their phones. This is truly frustrating for parents. The choice whether to get your child that smartphone or not is yours as their parent, but you should be aware of what it entails before you make that decision. Most importantly, certain rules should be set before even giving your child that phone. We aren’t going to be able to stop social media, but at least we can gain knowledge about it in order to keep our children safe.

Keeping your blended family healthy can be a challenge. As children shuffle from home to home, they can can also bring their illness from home to home. We can’t always control the other home environment where our children live when they aren’t with us. We can only teach them the importance of healthy eating and exercise. In this episode I share tips and challenges. I also get into the benefits of using essential oils to improve your family’s health.

33-Forgiveness in the blended family
18:16

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Forgiveness is something that is necessary in all families. Blended families will not be as successful if we cannot learn how forgive others. It is also extremely important to teach our children how to do this. These nine steps were taken from www.learningtoforgive.com

  1. Know exactly how you feel about what happened and be able to articulate what about the situation is not OK. Then, tell a trusted couple of people about your experience.

  2. Make a commitment to yourself to do what you have to do to feel better. Forgiveness is for you and not for anyone else.

  3. Forgiveness does not necessarily mean reconciliation with the person that hurt you, or condoning of their action. What you are after is to find peace. Forgiveness can be defined as the “peace and understanding that come from blaming that which has hurt you less, taking the life experience less personally, and changing your grievance story.”

  4. Get the right perspective on what is happening. Recognize that your primary distress is coming from the hurt feelings, thoughts and physical upset you are suffering now, not what offended you or hurt you two minutes – or ten years – ago. Forgiveness helps to heal those hurt feelings.

  5. At the moment you feel upset practice a simple stress management technique to soothe your body’s flight or fight response.

  6. Give up expecting things from other people, or your life, that they do not choose to give you. Recognize the “unenforceable rules” you have for your health or how you or other people must behave. Remind yourself that you can hope for health, love, peace and prosperity and work hard to get them.

  7. Put your energy into looking for another way to get your positive goals met than through the experience that has hurt you. Instead of mentally replaying your hurt seek out new ways to get what you want.

  8. Remember that a life well lived is your best revenge. Instead of focusing on your wounded feelings, and thereby giving the person who caused you pain power over you, learn to look for the love, beauty and kindness around you. Forgiveness is about personal power.

  9. Amend your grievance story to remind you of the heroic choice to forgive.

30-Feeling Unappreciated in the Blended Family
14:54

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

There are many roles we play in our blended families, and sometimes we can feel unappreciated for all that we do. There are five main categories or roles that we feel unappreciated in.

  1. Stepparent

  2. Parent

  3. Partner

  4. Child

  5. New partner (unappreciated by partner’s ex)

Proper communication can help, by expressing to your family what your needs are. Most of us have these feelings at one point or another.

29-Raise the Child You Were Given
15:26

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

It is very common as parents to compare our own children to other children. This comparison hinders us from truly seeing the positive qualities in a child. We need to accept, love, and embrace our kids for who they are, positive and negative. Blended families can struggle with this, as suddenly there are other kids in the home, and often we cannot help but to compare our biological children to our stepchildren. It is our human nature to do this, but it’s important to try not to for the sake of your child, and for your own sanity. You can make a conscious effort to stop comparing, love your children for who they are, and focus on their positive qualities.

28-Escaping Perfectionism
15:34

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

Perfectionism is something that many people struggle with. When it comes to a blended family, we can feel pressure to have the “perfect” family. This, of course, is an unrealistic expectation.

In this episode, we discuss the questions to ask yourself to determine if you are a perfectionist, examples of what perfectionism looks like in a blended family, and what steps you can take to overcome perfectionism, which involve

  • recognition and forgiveness

  • self dialogue

  • surrender

  • sense of humor

Perfectionism is definitely something that can improve over time, thereby improving your quality of life, and the quality of all of your relationships.

27-Before you call it quits
17:27

melissa@blendedfamilypodcast.com

www.blendedfamilypodcast.com

In almost all relationships, at some point or another, couples are faced with a decision to end a relationship or stick it out. The stresses of a blended family can really put an extra strain on a relationship. Before you decide to end a relationship, and affect not only your lives, but the lives of your children, there are some important 5 key factors to look at.

  • length of the relationship

  • overall quality of the relationship

  • how many children are involved, and how would they feel if there were a breakup
