236 - Joseph Gordon-Levitt and The Magic of Just Hitting Record
01:05:47

HOLY GOODNESS WE HAVE JGL ON THE SHOW TODAY!!! AAAAHH!!!

I have been a Joseph Gordon-Levitt super fan for well over a decade.

I first started following Joe's career back in high school when I discovered his first major dramatic role in the film 'Manic' and followed him as he went on to star in Rian Johnson's first film 'Brick'.

It's been incredible as a fan to watch him rise from those indie films to prominent roles in blockbusters such as Looper, Inception and Batman The Dark Knight Rises.

In this special interview episode, we dive deep into Joe's creative practice, what lead to his biggest breakthrough and ultimately the lesson that allowed him to reinvent his career from child actor to a-list movie star.

233 - From Doing Stand Up in a Living Room to a Role on an NBC TV Show - Comedian Johnny Pemberton
01:23:56

FRIEEEEENDS!!!!!! This is one of my favorite conversations we’ve ever had on the podcast!!!!

Today on the show we have hilarious comedian Johnny Pemberton! You may know Johnny as Bo from the NBC comedy Superstore or the voice of Peanut from the Disney XD show Pickle and Peanut.

Beyond his extensive IMDB credits, Johnny has a phenomenal (and super ridiculous) podcast called “Live to Tape”. From Tim Meadows to Duncan Trussell to Johnny’s Mom to ME, “Live to Tape” has a deep back catalog of conversations with super interesting characters.

I find myself referencing the ideas from this episode ALL THE TIME. You’re gonna love this episode and JOHNNY! GET IN THERE!

230 - The Number 1 Most Essential Tactic I Used to Build My Creative Career
00:55:59

Don't you just love that moment the trailer drops for a sequel you've been dying to see?

That huge secret drop moment is so sexy we all fantasize about replicating this moment in our own creative work.

But the problem is if no one cared about your 'first film' no one's gonna be stoked about your super top secret trailer for movie 2 when you drop it.

So...

If an album drops on the internet and no one's there to hear it, does it make a sound?

NO. It doesn't.

That's why you need to quit sitting on your creative ideas.

Perfecting that piece in the dark isn't going to make that album or book drop more successful if no one is watching.

In this episode I want to detail a process where you create at the same time you're learning and at the same time you're marketing and gaining attention for your work.

229 - The 6 Step Process to Unlock Powerful Creative Business Momentum
01:03:25

What makes a good musician, writer or illustrator?

We’re told that it’s practice. Put in the time and you’ll become a master. But how many technically-masterful creative hometown heroes do you know that never even got close to making it?

Yes. They can shred the guitar like Hendrix. They can draw photorealistic portraits. They can write with perfect grammar and command a vast vocabulary.

They’ve put in their 10,000 hours...

And technically their craft is perfect...

But the art isn’t “good”.

So if it’s not about practice, passion, talent or skill, what’s the real foundation of great creative work? What’s it actually all about?

I believe the secret is hiding in plain sight, right under your nose and quite literally at the tip of your tongue but if you don’t know where to look for it you’ll never find it!

In this episode I want to share the idea that completely reinvented how I see creative work and my own creative super powers, and how I used this idea to develop a 6 Step process for unlocking your true creative business potential.

00:24:37

The mindset you approach your creative work with determines so much of the outcome, so it's super important that you have a healthy approach to your creativity.

Hollywood hasn't helped much on this front. There are hundreds of movies that perpetuate unhelpful creative stereotypes.

In this episode I want to address one of the most toxic creative myths plaguing creatives today. My hope is that this will help you establish a new perspective that will unleash your best creative work to date!!

223 - The Strategy I Used to Crush My 2018 Goal in 12 Weeks (Call the Midwife Series Pt 2)
00:49:14

For years my goal setting strategy was less like a business tactic and more like a time capsule. I'd write my goals on my phone and then forget about them until a year later when I was making new ones.

Upon seeing the previous years goals my reaction was "Oh yeah, I forgot I even wanted to do that... well that didn't happen..."

LAST YEAR THOUGH this changed! I took a different approach to goal setting and action planning that caused my yearlong goal to be accomplished in less than 12 weeks!

Tune in this week if you want to:

  • Get clarity on what you really want
  • Tactics for planning a strategic game plan
  • An idea that may help you know if it's time to take a leap!

This is PART TWO of our CALL THE MIDWIFE... DR. PIZZA series!!

222 - How to GET SUPER PUMPED by Unearthing Your True Desire (Call the Midwife Series Pt 1)
01:16:54

Does your story feel stuck?

If you're feeling stuck it may be because you quit letting yourself dream. It may be because you're not really sure what your dream even is.

Stories only start because the main character wants something. It moves the plot forward, it calls the hero to action, it pushes them through conflict and obstacles.

And yet we often walk around day to day without any clear sense of desire. No wonder we feel apathetic and crushed by even the smallest things!

In this episode we talk about the power of tapping into your best truest desires and HOW to unearth them! These tactics switched on my creative fuel in a whole new way!

This is PART ONE of our CALL THE MIDWIFE... DR. PIZZA series!!

220 - 6 Tactics to Routinely Unlock Your Best Creative Self w/ Suzy Ultman PART 1
01:14:30

This two part conversation with my friend Suzy Ultman is sure to go down as one of our all time favorites in the Creative Pep Talk Podcast Hall of Fame!

It's no secret that I've been stressed out as of late, and that's part of the reason I reached out to my friend Suzy to be on the show. Suzy has this peaceful / intentional quality about her, and I invited over to the studio to share her mental health secrets with us!

Not only is Suzy just a great person to be around, she has the double whammy of being an INCREDIBLY INSPIRING illustrator, story teller & product designer. Suzy's toys and books are so gorgeous that my wife and I have sprinkled them throughout our home and given them as gifts to our kids (and our kid's friends) on many occasions!

In this episode we have a long conversation about Suzy's methods for staying sane as an artist, her sister's passing from cancer, the right mindset to approach inspiration and much much more!

01:05:11

The episode is CREATIVE REAL TALK. No music. No frills. One take.

In this episode I share my current struggles, the lessons I'm learning right now in real time, and why I've been doing some unprecedented (for me) levels of soul searching in my life over the past 3 months.

This is a very vulnerable / real / authentic episode. I hope it's a welcome brief change of pace that encourages and comforts you!

We talk about:

  • The question to ask yourself if you want more followers
  • Why you're not able to be authentic in your work
  • Your role in the hero's journey as an artist
  • Dealing with nagging put downs from the past or present

The New Year is an exciting time but often the excitement is short lived. We have such high hopes for all the changes we're going to make, but most often our hopes are crushed by someone who's very hard to defeat: OURSELVES!

YES. The OLD YOU you want to leave behind is the number 1 thing standing in the way of the NEW YOU you'd like to become and if you try to repress this OLD YOU it just seems to get stronger!

So I guess we should all just give up right?

NO! You have so much untapped potential and there are a few principles that will help you unleash your BEST SELF from the confines of your OLD SELF.

In this episode I want to share what's helped me become a better version of myself and ultimately become the type of person that can build and wield a thriving creative career!

214 - How to Send E-Mails that Change Your Life & MORE (BEST YEAR YET 2019 Pt 2 of 2)
01:02:40

The most important part of business is sales and the number 1 rule in sales is this: BELIEVE IN YOUR PRODUCT! You see, if you TRULY believe in your product and believe it will enrich the lives of your customers, you'll see marketing as a public service. If you have something that will really make people's lives better, you owe it to them to spread the word!

This is even more true in creative careers and creative business! You owe it to your potential true fans to get your work in front of them!

In this episode we share numbers 7 - 12 of our FRESH TACTICS for direct marketing so that you can make 2019 your best year yet!

This episode also features SPECIAL GUEST Kyle Scheele. Kyle is a full time public speaker and out of everyone I know he is the BEST at email cold calls and direct marketing and I asked him to share his tricks in this episode.

212 - How to Have Your True BIG BREAK!
00:51:01

They have been lying to you since you were born. You've been told "that's just the way it is" about taxes, school, work, and pretty much everything. But the truth is that nothing is ever "just the way it is", it's the way people before you decided it would be.

The world isn't just the way it is, it's the way you make it and until you realize this not just in your head, but in your heart, you will be held back from living your full creative potential.

In this episode I want to share with you how I've started to unlearn this limitation and how it's dramatically impacted my approach to creative work.

In this episode you will...

  • Learn about a post modern philosophy that will unlock your best work
  • Be introduced to a system for leveling up your creative work
  • Hear me do an impression of Morpheus from The Matrix

210 - You've Been Lied To And It's Holding You Back
01:03:00

In the movie Mean Girls, Regina George believes that these carb bars will make her lose weight, when in fact they are intended to make you GAIN WEIGHT!
.
Why does she believe this? Because Lindsay Lohan lies to her.
.
My point? Don’t eat carb bars… AND believing a lie can have TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES EVEN ABOVE AND BEYOND NOT BEING PROM READY!
.
In the latest episode I show my SALTY SIDE. THIS IS A SALTY PIZZA EPISODE. I’m mad because I believe we creative types are force fed lies that hurt our ability to thrive to our full potential.
.
In this episode of Creative Pep Talk podcast, I’ll tell you why I’m mad, what lies are hurting you and I’ll share tactics to transcend these lies to live your full creative potential.

209 -Self Doubt, ADHD and Breakthrough with Saiman Chow
00:45:37

Today's episode is an interview with the brilliant mind that is Saiman Chow. I saw him give a talk at the ICON Illustration conference and my mind was seriously blown. I had to track him down and beg him to let me interview him.

Saiman's illustration and animation looks like a beautiful chaotic brain, forever in play.

This chat will inspire you to burst through self doubt and get lost in the play of your creative practice!

201 - How to Find Your Gift
01:03:12

Finding your creative gift is the most important (and difficult) pursuit in your creative career, and in this episode, I will share all the clues that have helped me make progress on this journey.

From podcast interviews to speaking at conferences, I am very fortunate to get to meet a lot of phenomenal creative professionals. For the longest time, the central question for me has been this: what do the best of the best have in common? Over time, a pattern emerged: while there are an infinite amount of creative gifts, the people who know truly know what there gift really is are the ones that rise and stay at the top.

And yet, most of the artists I meet seem petrified to ask themselves "what is my gift?"

Maybe it's because we're afraid that we don't really have a gift? Maybe we're afraid because our gift is different than what we've spent years pretending it is?

Whatever your fear of facing this deeply important question is, it's my hope that today's episode will give you the tools you need to have a breakthrough on this journey!

How is it the 200th episode!? How have I been doing this for almost 4 years??!

In this episode we explore how to make creativity that's valuable, why it matters that you care about your craft (even if it's not what the audience cares about) and how to stay excited about your work even after you've reached major career milestones.

We also chat about Bierut's upcoming talk at the Exhibit Columbus 2018 Nation Symposium. This is in Columbus, IN (my hometown) not Columbus, OH (my current home)... I know... it's a tad confusing, but I promise it will all make sense if you just listen! :)

198 - 17 Ways to Tap Into Your Creative Joy (Even When the Pressure is On!)
01:23:44

The relationship between art and money is a real tricky one. One of the the biggest challenges stems from the fact that involving money into the equation puts pressure on your creativity. This is a major issue because, neurologically speaking, your best creative work comes from a place of play... AKA the opposite of pressure.

This means those of us that get paid to be creative for a living face a unique battle: how do we stay loose when the pressure's on? How do we consistently execute at our best, when trying TOO HARD gets worse results?

In this episode I share 17 tricks that really help me unlock my best work, even when the pressure is on.

As people who make THINGS, it's easy to be hyper focused on WHAT we make, but that should not be your only concern. WHERE you put what WHAT you make matters just as much.

If you put the best restaurant in the worst location, it's going to fail, and the same goes for your art. Where you share your art matters, and in this episode we share ideas on how to get the most out of WHAT you make, by finding the right way to distribute it.

01:10:33

It's noisy and no one wants to be sold anything anymore. No company is looking for new untapped talent, they just seem to sit back and wait for the "best" to rise to the top of the internet.

In this climate, how is a creative person supposed to break into a new market or win a new dream opportunity? Are we just at the mercy of people discovering us? Or can we actively make stuff happen in our creative careers?

In this episode, I want to share a strategy for developing work that can tackle these tough problems, and give you an edge for breaking through into your dream opportunities.

189 - Finding Peak Creative Performance
01:00:29

Does planning make perfect? Or is it best to shoot from the hip? Should you meticulously obsess over the details or should you just let those creative juices flow???

In this episode I want to share a principle that has helped me strike a balance and tap into my own personal peak creative performance.

Your peak performance will be a different recipe than mine, but hopefully my process will help you find yours!!!

This episode comes from personal experience, studying best creative practices of others and theories around the neuroscience of creativity. Over the past few years I've tried to take all of these findings and turn them into actual practical applications.

188 - Why You're Off Track
01:04:00

Being a creative person is incredible... except when it's not.

To be a pro creative you've got to work hard and be a professional, but playing that part can sometimes lead to ignoring your needs and emotions.

There's a secret I know about most creative people. They can look all cool and collected and pro when they need to, but behind that cool facade there is often a volcano of emotions.

I know the truth about you... you're emo. You may not listen to My Chemical Romance (anymore) but you still struggle with nerves, insecurities, emotional exhaustion, self doubt, etc.

You can't just stuff all these feelings in the pursuit of being a professional, and here's why: this sensitivity isn't just a curse, it's your gift. This sensitivity to the human experience is one of your key superpowers!! In many ways, it's the secret to being a creative person! And that means you need to take care of it and even nurture it.

In this episode I want to share ideas and tactics that have helped me get into the right mental and emotional state to achieve what I think is my best creative work!

187 - How to Get More YOU into Your Art w/ Jon Burgerman
00:53:02

Would the people that know you best, see 'you' in the art that you make? The self discovery and artistic development required to pull this off can seem like an impossible mountain to climb, so I asked artist Jon Burgerman, how has he done it?

I don't know anyone who is as good as Jon at downloading their essence into their art and in this episode I chat with Jon about what the process of getting to this place looks like.

184 - Challenge Everything!!
00:53:36

What do you do when something's broken? You take it apart.

I think we all have a deep sense that EVERYTHING is broken right now and because of that we are deconstructing EVERYTHING!!

For this reason, this year's 99u conference theme of "Challenging Everything" felt VERY APPROPRIATE to me.

In this episode I want to share the breakthroughs I had while at 99u this past month and how they've impacted my outlook in my day to day creative career and my big picture perspective as a person.

In this episode we will talk about the power of writing your own rules, how admitting you don't know everything is the first step of breaking new ground and unlock the secrets of the cosmos!!! haha... not really... but kinda ;)

...

This week's show is a very special edition of Creative Pep Talk because it was made in partnership with Adobe! They brought me out to their 99u Conference in NYC and this episode is all about what I learned while I was there.

182 - Why You've Got to Get in the Game!!!
00:50:56

Do you ever feel like you're hiding behind the subjectivity of art? Like the fact that creativity is subjective, means no one can tell you you're bad or good. Right?

I would say: wrong! Take the very creative world of food for example. Like what's good food and bad food might be up for debate to a degree, but ultimately undercooked poultry can objectively kill you! That is undoubtedly "bad food".

I believe that in the world of professional creativity, value is more objective than you think and in this episode I explain why this is great news! We also talk about a practice that will help you become objectively better at what you do.

180 - Do the Opposite of "Going Viral"
00:33:35

Is it just me, or does it seem like people think creative work only matters if it's reaching insane amounts of people? Like if you've never made something that's gone viral, than you're not really in the REAL creative game? Like if you don't have a bonkers amount of followers on social media than you're creativity just doesn't really matter?

In this episode I want to argue the opposite. I want to prove to you that deep impact is better than wide appeal when it comes to your creativity. I also want to suggest a practical way of implementing this idea into the creative work you're making today.

171 - The 1 Thing You HAVE TO DO! (Creative Career Path Series Pt 2)
00:53:46

When comedian Steve Martin was asked advice on breaking into Hollywood his advice was simple and brilliant “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

Yes! This advice is true and helpful, but there’s just one problem: how do you “get good” when the arts and all things creative are “subjective”? What’s the secret to “getting good”?

In this episode I share a career changing principle that unlocks the first major step in your journey.

The ideas in this episode have become a foundation in which I’ve built my creative career and I hope they do this for you too!

This is part 2 of the Creative Career Path Series - The Creative Career Path is a 7 step process that helps you make REAL progress and enables creative career breakthrough! If you feel lost or stuck, this series is designed for you!

168 - The Power of Finding Your Audience
00:56:09

There are a million reasons we like to bury our heads in the sand and just get lost in our art, but if you want your creative business to consistently thrive for the long haul, we need to stay tuned to the culture, where our audience’s attention is and what people are responding to in our work.

Can you imagine any business completely ignoring their audience / the market and succeeding long term? Can you imagine a stock broker that didn’t follow the stock market? I believe that creative professionals are partially called to be like stock brokers in the stock exchange, but instead dealing in the currency of culture exchange.

Ryan Holiday calls this ‘Product Market Fit’ in his book Growth Hacker Marketing, and in this episode we do a deep dive into WHY ignorance about your industry and culture in general is a terrible strategy and how to stay-tuned-in in such a way that you develop and evolve with your audience.

161 - Getting Through Your Dark Days (Creative Philosophy Series)
00:55:17

I don’t know how to tell you this without just telling you: this episode contains personal stories of emotional / mental health struggles from my past that I’ve never publicly shared before. It wasn’t easy to record, but I believe I have an opportunity to open up and shed some light on some dark areas that I assume many in our community have struggled with.

“Creative professional” can feel a bit like an oxymoron sometimes. Most creatives I know can be pro and act the part on the surface, but still remain the very squishy emotional artist underneath. Because of this, we often hide our struggles behind professionalism and positivity.

In this episode, I want to give you some tools for grappling with obstacles and setbacks in totally new ways. Also, I’d like to pull behind the curtain a bit and share my own past struggles.

It’s my hope that by sharing my story of emotional ups and downs that you will feel encouraged and less alone.

160 - 7 Steps to Breaking Through in Your Industry (Creative Philosophy Series)
00:55:04

The one constant is change. We all know this is true. This can be anxiety inducing when it comes to your creative career. Whether you’re just getting started or completely established, knowing the rules, trends and opportunities WILL change at some point in the future can be very scary.

This means that nothing is more important than mastering the art of the breakthrough. As things change, if you’re able to continually break into new markets, you will always be able to grow with the times.

In this episode, we talk about a solution for staying ahead of these changes, and it doesn’t involve being afraid all the time. I believe, if you master this one creative virtue, you can stay relevant for a lifetime.

158 - The Lie that's Killing Your Creative Work (Philosophy Series Pt. 2)
00:53:11

I believe there are a lot of hurtful myths about creativity perpetuated by creative people. These lies keep us down and keep us from thriving. In this episode I want to expose one of these lies and replace it with what I think is a higher truth about creative work.

Are you ever frustrated with the rollercoaster of being a creative person? One minute you’re making the best thing you ever made, the next minute you’re so aggravated with your work you’re thinking of becoming a postal worker?

Obviously, creativity has it’s ups and downs, but I believe that if you have the right mindset, and approach your craft in this certain way, your creative work can be a source of ever deepening joy.

154 - Discover Yourself & The Courage to Get Yourself Out There (Marketing Series Pt 5)
00:48:06

Marketing can be pretty gross and the idea of ‘personal brand’ can be marketing at it’s grossest! But it doesn’t have to be this way. In my experience, personal brand can be an outpouring of real inner work and self discovery if you approach it the right way.

It’s no secret that ‘personal brand’ is a game changer for your creative success, but if you, like me, find the notion of personal brand to seem shallow, I challenge you to listen to this episode and see that this journey can be quite the opposite!

Plus this episode is completely based on big chain pizza restaurant slogans… so you know it’s gonna be good.

May your personal brand journey be as deep as a Chicago deep dish pizza pie!

152 - The Most Powerful Marketing Technique that’s Massively Underused (Marketing Series Pt 3)
00:56:54

Marketing can be so discouraging when you’re not focusing your efforts on what really works. In my experience there are only a few styles of marketing that really work today and one of them is ‘influencer marketing’. Influencer marketing is like 'word of mouth' on steroids.

Now, if you can resist puking in your mouth at the sound of the word ‘influencer’, I think we can learn some things from this marketing style that will not only help us grow our creative careers but also do so in a way that is more positively human!

151 - The Most Powerful Tactic for Growing Your Creative Career (Marketing Series Pt 2)
00:57:17

These days, most creatives market their work with what we call ‘personal projects’, but often our personal projects don’t get the results we want. If your marketing efforts feel like playing the game Operation with giant BBQ grill tongs instead of precise effective tweezers, you have to listen to this episode.

NOTHING has changed my career like understanding and properly utilizing content marketing. In this episode we will learn how to apply the principles of effective content marketing to our creative passion projects.

149 - Stay Ahead of the Curve with The Heads of State
00:56:22

Staying relevant over the long haul is a concern of almost every designer I know. So how do you do it? What does it take?

What better way to find out than to chat with someone (or in this case someones) who has actually done it?

The design duo (now full studio) The Heads of State have had many lives.

These guys cut their teeth in the early 2000s gig poster scene, transitioned to illustrators for the likes of The New York Times and now take on larger design projects as a full on design studio.

In this interview I really wanted to pick their brains and find out what was it about them that enabled them to stay relevant over the past 15 years? And how do you navigate large transitions in your career?

Should you keep going on the path you’re on or do you need to try something else? Is it about grit or should you be pivoting? Just keep swimming or fail fast and explore something new?

My hope is that whenever you’re stuck asking these questions, this episode will be your guide.

119 - Why There's No Excuse
00:39:27

This episode is a brand new live talk that I did for the AAF chapter in Baton Rouge.

If there’s a paved road to where you’d like to go, the connection has already been made and the opportunity for creativity is already gone.

There’s always an excuse not to do the work you’re here to do, there’s always an obstacle, and in this episode I suppose that maybe that’s not such a bad thing?

Had such a blast going down to the South for this talk, thanks Baton Rouge for having me!

Yao is a watercolor artist and designer based in Columbus, Ohio. With this medium, the connection was immediate and it has since defined her painting style and marked the beginning for Yao Cheng Design!

We talk about starting your own business, Yao’s artistic breakthroughs and what it feels like when you’ve found your flow.
