773: You Deserve to Feel Good {Interview with Cherylanne Skolnicki}
59:32

"We cannot achieve more in life than what we believe in our heart of hearts we deserve to have." - James R. Ball

In this episode, Cherylanne and I talk about:

  • How to give yourself permission to feel good
  • How to find alignment in all areas of life
  • How to overcome the perfection and enjoy life

Want to be a rock star at work and at home? Cherylanne Skolnicki has the playbook. As an entrepreneur with a husband and three kids of her own, she knows exactly how it feels to have too much to do and not enough time to do it. It's exhausting, it's stressful, and it can be tempting to just give in to the chaos. Like most children of the 80s and 90s, Cherylanne grew up believing she could have it all. She started her first business while still in high school, and dreamed of one day becoming a CEO. After graduating from Cornell, she went to work for Procter & Gamble where she spent the next 15 years climbing the corporate ladder and managing a portfolio of well known consumer product brands (one had more than $1 billion in global sales). Despite her demanding work schedule, she still traveled, ran marathons, and volunteered like a boss. And then she had 3 children. All of a sudden, the unrelenting pace she was running at felt unsustainable. That’s when she knew she had to reorder her life so all the pieces would truly fit - including not just a thriving career and family life, but also a good night's sleep and some time to herself! It wasn't easy at first, but she finally discovered a set of practices that truly worked. That prompted her to found Brilliant Balance, and her playbook has helped thousands of professional women reclaim rock star status over the last decade. Her company, Brilliant Balance, offers work-life mentorship and coaching programs to help you have a fulfilling career, a thriving family life, and a strong sense of self. Cherylanne is a sought-after speaker and hosts the top-rated Brilliant Balance podcast. Her work has been featured in Thrive Global, The Huffington Post, Forbes, Women’s Day, and Cincy Chic. She appears on TV news shows as an expert on work life balance, productivity, and purpose. Cherylanne graduated from Cornell University in 1995. She holds an MBA from the Goizueta School of Management at Emory University. She is a member of the Female Founders Collective, one of Cincinnati’s 100 Wise Women, a Forty Under 40 Honoree, a happy wife, and a proud mom of three.

697: How Can You Manage It All? {Interview with Heather Fawcett}
01:06:01

“Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” – Barbara Kingsolver

In this episode, Heather and I talk about:

  • How to listen and connect with each other
  • Why it's important to share our stories
  • What our children can teach us

Heather is a mom to a wild, curious, charismatic 9 year old son. She became a parent through International adoption where she journeyed to Russia to bring home her son. Her kiddo has been demonstrating big behaviours since he was very small. In the process of getting diagnosis and treatment for his dysregulation she has uncovered a wealth of knowledge, tools and experiences that she would like to pay forward and share with other moms that have kiddos that are differently wired. It is a healing journey for both of us that continues to unfold and evolve. My favourite quote: "Motherhood is about raising and celebrating the child you have, not the child you thought you'd have. Its about understanding he is exactly the person he is supposed to be. And, if you're lucky, he might be the teacher who turns you into the person you're supposed to be"

Not only did she lose track of her passions, she didn’t even know how to find them again. Through her journey of self-reflection, Katie realized when she feeds her soul first everyone around her benefits. This inspired her to become an advocate for other women, helping them take the action they need to experience the same joy.

"Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak."
-Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati

In this episode, Ariel and I talk about:

  • Why meditation is so important
  • How to learn how to meditate
  • The power of the mind

Ariel Garten is a neuroscientist, innovator, and entrepreneur whose driving purpose is to empower and help others overcome mental obstacles in order to live healthy, happy lives and reach their maximum potential. Garten is co-founder of InteraXon, the makers of Muse: the brain sensing headband. Muse is the award-winning wearable technology that assists and trains meditation and mindfulness. Before founding InteraXon, Ariel was not only trained as a neuroscientist and psychotherapist, but also started her own international clothing line while she worked in labs researching Parkinson’s disease and hippocampal neurogenesis. Her creativity and entrepreneurial head combined with her fascination with the brain lead her to join forces with two like minded friends Chris and Trevor to start InteraXon. Together they founded a Silicon Valley backed startup that allowed people to control computers with their minds, the technology that sparked the creation of Muse. Her team’s technology has been featured in over 1000 media pieces, as well as was the feature showcase at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, an installation that allowed over 7,000 people control the lights on the CN tower, Canadian parliament buildings, and Niagara Falls with their brains from across the country. These days, Ariel can be found at home playing with her 2 year old or on stage across the world speaking about happiness, meditation, understanding mental health, or telling her own innovation story, consistently giving her audiences the tools they need to help them become their best selves.

624: Race, Identity, & Common Ground {Interview with Sara & Misasha}
50:50

"Parents are the ultimate role models for children. Every word, movement, and action has an effect. No other person or outside force has a greater influence on a child than the parent." - Bob Keeshan

Sara & Misasha are the co-hosts of Dear White Women, a social justice podcast exploring race, identity, happiness, and more in the United States. Our personal drive to leave this world a better place for our children became the impetus for this show, and each episode builds on our shared core beliefs in the humanity of all people and that we rise by lifting others.

In a nutshell: we are best friends who met when we were walking out of a racial identity conversation (we’re both half-White and half-Japanese) as undergraduates at Harvard. Misasha is married to a Black man, is a lawyer, amateur historian, and Megaformer fitness coach; Sara is married to a White Canadian, and is a life coach, positive psychology aficionado, and happiness consultant - and together, we have four very mixed-race school-aged children. Our podcast highlights the uncomfortable conversations that we've been having with each other for years, as we hope that the journey that we're on to be and do better can be one that others can relate to, in figuring out what matters and what you're willing to do about it.

In this episode, I talk with Sara & Misasha about:

  • Why it's important to have diverse conversations
  • How to have sensitive conversations with your children
  • How to actively talk to your kids about race

574: It's Not About the Mountains, It's About the Journey {Interview with Morgan Ruff}

“Life is a daring adventure towards an unknown future. Its beauty depends on how much you enjoy the journey.”  ― Debasish Mridha

Morgan is a nature momma at heart and is raising two wild girls in the heart of the Pacific Northwest along with her husband. She grew up in the pacific northwest, spending childhood hours gazing into the beauty of tidepools, chatting with the resident whales as they passed by, and trying to stay focused while inside the confines of the schools. She has an undergraduate degree in environmental eduction which gives her the credentials to run around in the woods singing songs and playing games to teach about nature. After being a kayak and wilderness guide in Alaska and other far off places, Morgan heeded the call to grow up and returned to school to pursue a Master's in marine policy. Morgan now has worked over 12 years to recover endangered Chinook salmon and Orca whales. The mountains and being outside with people continue to call. Morgan has an active Instagram community where she explores the magic of nature, environmental anxiety, climate change, and how we can create more ease and joy amidst the changes we're seeing in the world.

572: The Persecutor, The Victim, and The Rescuer
13:41

“The Karpman drama triangle is a classic model of codependent behaviour. First of all, a codependent will rescue someone. Then, when their ‘brave and charitable’ work hasn’t been acknowledged, they become very angry at the person they have attempted to rescue. And finally, they start to feel like a victim. They feel sorry for themselves and complain how the person they rescued never appreciated them. The important thing to learn here is that if a person wants to change, it’s because they have made a decision to do so.”  ― Christopher Dines
