Basic Mistakes

I teach four simple steps to weightloss.

Drink water (shoot for 64 ounces to help prevent carb and salt cravings).

Get 7-9 hours of sleep (otherwise, your body can't burn fat and will store it instead).

Eat when you get hungry (not just when it's time or you want to) and stop right before you're full (instead of when you feel bloated and burpy).

And, make a plan of what you'll eat for the day, including foods you like (instead of hoping you'll "do good" and then eating whatever you want in the moment when you're tired and stressed).

That's the bottom line of everything I teach. It's simple and makes sense. But there are a couple of mistakes I see people make all the time.

I recently spent a week with 20,000 women teaching them how to take control of food.

And I learned two things.

One is that the diet industry has done a good job teaching us how to be terrified of food.

We spend our days thinking...What if I get hungry?

Thank you to all the bat shit crazy diets that convinced us eating 1200 calories a day "was good for us."

And kudos to the diets that said we need to eat every 2-3 hours, tricking us into believing that the way our bodies were designed is all a big fat lie.

THE TRUTH? You are designed NOT TO EAT UNTIL YOU ARE PHYSICALLY HUNGRY.

Why do you think you have belly chemicals to signal hunger and satisfaction to begin with? The good Lord didn't give those to you because He was bored AF designing you.

Look, you allowing hunger isn't a problem. It's what you make hungry mean that's the problem.

We all make being hungry mean some fucked up shit.

"I'll starve if I don't eat enough."

No, you won't! You might get hungry again and just eat! But at least TEST if you need to eat as much as you THINK you do.

"If I don't eat it all, not only am I "wasting" the food, but I might not get it again for a while!"

Like you ain't ever gonna eat a cheeseburger again for the rest of your life? Come on. And tell me whose belly, other than yours, benefits when you overeat for fear of waste.

The second thing I learned was how terrified people are they can't lose weight.

And when you're afraid, you're stuck making excuses as to why you can't lose weight because you don't want to face your FEARS.

We waste time thinking we don't have time, enough support, or the right conditions to lose weight.

When we could be spending time thinking about why we want it, what we ARE willing to do, the things we are willing to say no to, and the reasons we might be more capable than we give ourselves credit for.

Why You Can't Lose Weight (and how to fix it)

We have a lot of stories about our weight.

We forget the stories are debatable because they feel true to us. Day after day, we continue to think our bullshit and it just gets more and more believable.

The problem isn't that our shitty ass stories are true. The problem is we aren't CHALLENGING those stories with something equally as true.

I had the busted ass thought that I could lose weight but couldn't keep it off. After 20+ diets where I lost and regained 75lbs, I could argue all day that I'd always be overweight.

It never occurred to me that thinking about my failed diets was not USEFUL. It was a huge waste of my time to allow myself to feel defeated over my past.

Think about it. Most of us say, "I want to feel motivated and confident," when we start to lose weight. Yet we sit around worrying about every bite we put in our mouth, wondering if this will work, and then ruminating over each failure.

When I finally lost 100lbs, it had very little to do with what I ate and what I did. Hell, I was losing weight leaving mayo on cheeseburgers, swapping out a half-gallon of ice cream for a big ass bowl, and walking 15 minutes a day instead of laying on the couch thinking about how much I hated going to the gym.

The things I teach you to DO in weightloss are simple. What makes them easy is learning how to drop the BS stories around food, your body, your weight, and your life that feel as true as the sky is blue.

What changed most for me in weightloss was noticing when I was thinking like an asshole and deciding to think in a way that would help me.

That old BS thought, "I can't keep weight off," meant I had to think something equally as true when it reared its defeating and frustrating head.

I started with, "I'm figuring this out a little at a time." That was equally as true and helped me calm the F-down every day. It focused me on what I COULD do that day instead of what I probably wouldn't.

In today's podcast, the first person I coach is struggling with her old shitty diet thinking that keeps coming back. I give her great questions to ask herself so that each day she's more focused on who she wants to be more than what she's afraid will happen.

Turning 47 (Annual Birthday Reflection)

I know. Me crying isn't exactly breaking news. But 46 was a special year.

In today's podcast, Kathy does our annual interview of me. What did I learn and what do I want you to know about my life.

As always, I was vulnerable and honest. 46 was a year that I grew emotionally and took time to love parts of me I've never explored.

I share some powerful questions I challenged myself with.

My favorite was, "How much louder would I live my life if I loved myself at every turn?"

Needing to be busy (so I can feel important and needed).

Thinking I'm lazy when I took time off (because I always thought if I was up I should be working or productive).

Waiting on a perfect body to love my body. I spent the year putting my real body out into the world so I could hear my real thoughts (and change them for my own sake).

One of the most asked questions I get is, "How do I keep going when I want to quit my diet?"

If you're like me then you are GREAT about getting started. I'm sure Weight Watchers had a picture of me at the head office in honor of all my Monday morning contributions I made throughout my life.

Then I heard this quote on a Peleton ride the other that stopped me in my tracks.

I always had a good reason to start. It was Monday. I was sick and tired of my clothes not fitting. My best-friend was starting a new workout. I wanted to finally feel good about myself.

What I didn't have was passion to keep going when shit hit the fan. I didn't have gas in the tank to keep going after a few weeks. I didn't know how to keep going when I wanted to quit.

Why Weightloss Is So Hard

It's time for some straight talk.

Losing weight is hard. There's a lot of behavioral changes to make. The internet is filled with endless diet plans and methods that hold the promise of a quick fix.

Hell, your doctor is probably telling you to lose weight "but it'll be nearly impossible."

Your whole life feels like an endless cycle of starting and stopping diets where you work so hard. You try so many different things. But nothing is sticking. Nothing feels like you can keep doing it for the long haul.

Maybe you wonder, "Why can't I get started?" Or, "Why can't I just lose weight and be done?"

If you’re struggling to lose weight or keep it off I want you to know it's not your fault. The diets you've done in the past failed to teach you the important things.

Things like how to be around your favorite foods and enjoy them (instead of being so worried you'll overeat that you either RUN in the opposite direction OR go face down in it fearing you won't get to eat it again for a long time).

I used to say "I'm busy" as an excuse for not losing weight.

Leaving Food Behind When You Eat Out

Hate wasting food at a restaurant? Me too, but we gotta stop feeling wasteful if we're going to lose weight.

I grew up poor, eating at buffets, and my momma saying, "Eat all you can because I don't know when the next meal will be."

This led to a lifelong problem of overeating. I'd go out to eat. A big ass heaping of food would arrive that's tasty AF.

As I ate and hit the point where I've had just enough knowing anymore and it's time to unbutton the pants, my brain lights up like a firecracker thinking...

"I don't want to waste it. I need to get my money's worth."

Sure I can get a to-go box but in the moment I don't want a damn box. I want another fork load of steak dipped in mashed potatoes.

Then I was losing my 100lbs. I knew had to solve this. I had to learn how to stop eating and actually WANT to do it.

I didn't want to just learn how to stop eating and feel bad about it. I wanted to stop eating and feel GOOD about it.

I was ready to stop wasting my LIFE overeating food.

Meal Planning for Weightloss

This is a total breakdown of how I plan food.

Unless you live under a rock you know all about making a Doable Food Plan.

I firmly believe that writing down what you WILL eat for the day ahead of time works.

First, the version of you planning the food is looking at what you are facing that day and balancing it against what you want for yourself in a week, a month, and a year.

Second, if you're like me the reason you need to lose weight is that when you're left to "figure out what to eat" or "decide what you want in the moment" your EMOTIONS are doing the talking. And often the emotions of the moment are stress, anxiety, or busted ass tired. None of those guys ever make "healthy" choices.

Third, you need to quit thinking about food so fucking much! Write it down and the rest of the day think about your LIFE. Not what you are eating the next meal so you have something to look forward to. (Hint: that's a huge problem if the only joy you get is looking forward to what you'll eat.)

It took me years to convince Chris (a.k.a. The King) to join me on the podcast. Don't miss this one. Who knows if I'll ever get my introvert partner in crime back

Chris and I talked about our early days. Back when I was a hot mess emotionally and quick to get pissed to "test his love."

You'll hear me talk about my big ass insecurities. I was so ashamed of my body, scared to death he wouldn't like me naked and convinced that I didn't deserve such a good man.

As much as I loved him I felt someone like me, a big girl, wasn't suppose to have a good man in her life. I had such a self-concept and was convinced I was destined to be with douchebags who cheated on me.

Let's just say, I did a lot to test his love so I could convince myself he wasn't going anywhere. Yep, I talk about this in the podcast as shameful as it felt to admit it.

But, this podcast was special because there was one thing I discovered while talking to Chris.

He has always loved me for who I am. He has always seen me at my fullest potential before I could see it. And most importantly he has always been willing to believe one day I would see it, too.

Chris has always loved me even when I find it hard to love myself. Doing this podcast reminded me how important it is that we don't get lost in our own insecurities, that we miss out on all the love surrounding us.

How My Mom Lost 100lbs

It’s a first for me because I have my mama on, who everyone including me, calls Mammy.

Mammy and I have done the work to embrace our happy ending by allowing ourselves to be authentically each other.

The Number One Reason Diets Fail

Three Things You Have To Know To Lose Weight

What if I told you there are THREE things you need to know in order to lose weight?

Like many women, there was a time I used several glasses of wine to take the edge off of an exhausting day.

Over the last two years, I’ve worked hard to understand and even redefine my relationship to alcohol.

I didn't decide to quit drinking cold turkey. Instead, I used the same mindset for handling my food urges to reduce my drinking by 75%.

I listened to other No BS women talk about the similarities in food and drinking urges, just like in my own experience. My response was to have a special overdrinking course created in my private membership to support their needs.

Each year on my birthday I think about the past year of my life and I look at the coming year.
 
I'm turning 46. This year was different. My 30's and early 40's were all about the hustle, the weightloss, the learning, the teaching, the building. What I realized was that I was waiting for each success to happen before I felt good.

It's the difference between saying "I can't" and saying "I won't".

Think about how many times a day you say "I can't lose weight" or "I can't follow my plan". What you're really saying is that some outside force is preventing you from getting your work done.

Find people who do.

 

Use it as fuel to learn to support yourself unconditionally. 

 

Prove them wrong.

 

I want you to realize if someone else doesn’t believe in you that it doesn’t lessen your ability to lose weight. It shows you how much you are willing to believe in yourself.

 

It allows you to stop blaming and excusing your way to remaining at your weight.

Ladies. You want to fix the problem or not? You are going to think. We know that. Let's just start being more deliberate with it so we can get what we want. OUR GOALS!

 

One of the best things you can do for yourself when it comes to weightloss is to learn how to fill your brain with purposeful, good thoughts.

 

Guess what? When you do that you squeeze out time for non-purposeful harmful thoughts. This doesn't mean the old crap goes away. Doing the deliberate, nice talk just means you are at least evening out the playing field.

 

When you create a goal, you must picture yourself reaching that goal. Let's say you set a goal weight. What do you do at that weight? How do you feel? What do you look like?

 

Today's podcast dives deep in how to think more about where you are going than hating where you are.

I remember crazy diets I tried hoping this would be the one that would work.

The Military Diet was my favorite. It had tuna and ice cream on it. You ate this crazy mix for three days and then you eat “normally” for four.

If I knew how to eat normally I wouldn’t be on the Military Diet!

That’s the problem with your past diets. They expect you to just wake up on Monday, get your emotional eating act together and VOILA! You lose weight.

We are hosed year after year by the diet industry. This time of year is THE WORST.

You are seeing all the ads that promise MAJOR weightloss and this amazing happy life that will be the result of pre-packaged meals and a gym membership.

IF YOU DON’T READ ANYTHING ELSE PLEASE READ THIS.

They are counting on your desperation to lose weight. They will tell you about pills, shakes, meal plans, and more to convince you that weightloss is fast and easy.

What they don’t understand is that when you eat chips and ice cream at 8pm has nothing to do with being hungry.

I know back when I weighed 250lbs I ate because I was TIRED and desperately wanted some me time.

If you are like me, no shake makes you feel cared for and deserving of quiet time. Pills don’t take away feelings of stress and overwhelm from another day of not getting it all done.

I tried these diets and FAILED them time after time. I felt like a failure.

If you feel me then know this…

All that’s happened is the diet industry has set you up year after year to fail. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE.

I had a client ask me recently what to do when exercise feels hard. She wants to be an athlete, but she still has a lot of weight to lose. She works out then is laid up for days. She has the drive and the will, but her body is not quite ready to do what she really wants.

This is how I started. I had always wanted to be an athlete. But at 250 pounds and first starting out, all I could do was a 10 minute walk. And that's okay.

How Do You Throw Away Food and Not Clean Your Plate While Dieting?

Think about this. To lose weight you MUST be willing to eat just enough. You have to learn how to eat until satisfied. No one who "stuffs themselves" or is a card carrying member of the Clean Plate Club is going to lose weight easy.

To lose weight you have to be able to leave food behind.

Restaurants will over serve you, your mom will insist you have more, if you order pizza you get a better deal when you buy two, and sometimes even what you prepare yourself is just too much for that meal.

Your inability to "waste" food will make losing weight harder. You just can't overeat and expect losses.

When I work with clients I ask them how often they are overeating. A lot of them think overeating is limited to a binge-fest on a bad day.

Nope! In fact, for most of us, that's the LEAST damaging. Give-up moments are easy to spot.

What's elusive and often WAY harder to stop is the justified overeating.

"I"m full, but I portioned this so I should finish it."

"It's just a couple of bites left in the pan."

"OOOHHH a bite of Mac and Cheese left on juniors plate."

"I hate to waste the food...I paid for it."

"It's free! I'm broke so I need to take advantage."

All of this is waste. Waste going straight to your waist.

When you overeat you aren't saving money or getting your money's worth.

Overeating wastes your mental energy day dreaming about losing weight, it wastes your time on this earth toting around too many pounds, and it wastes your ability to know how much food you need.

One interesting concept I was teaching a Tribe member the other day was that you will NEVER know how much food to buy at the store if you keep polishing off food that you aren't hungry for. Think of the money you waste over-buying each week!

If you have head drama over leaving food behind OK. That's fine. Have some head drama but toss the food. Toss the food knowing you are teaching yourself how to quit wasting time wanting to lose weight. You will eventually teach yourself how much food you need and probably start buying less.

In this podcast we talk about how to put into practice leaving food behind deliberately.

Trust me. I still work on leaving food behind. When I do I think someone should march in with confetti and celebrate. Even after 13 years of keeping my weight off I feel like not cleaning my plate is an amazing feat. I don't know if wasting food will ever feel natural but I'm OK with that. I kind of like this body and willing to just keep working at it.

Plus, maybe that confetti will erupt. I sure hope I get a selfie.

HOLY CRAP it's episode 50!

As we were thinking about this episode, we decided to look at the evolution of the podcast and the evolution we've seen in ourselves.

One of us is a talker and the other is a planner. Can you guess which is which? But here's the funny thing - the one who talks actually plans more and the one who plans actually gets in front of the mike and talks!

I've watched the coaches on my team think outside the box and question what they believed about themselves.

I've watched the four of us as team members grow and change and refocus our lives in a way that serves women who want to lose their physical and mental weight.

It's been a tremendous year of growth...growth in knowledge and even more in self-confidence and self-awareness.

And the podcast has allowed me to connect to people in a way I've never been able to imagine. I've brought you problems and solutions, coaching moments and applause, and laughter and tears.

It's taught me to quit trying to please everyone and to try to change the person's life who needs me right now. It's shown me how to show up for the person who identifies with me and all my sass and vinegar, and a few tears now and then too.

My purpose is to change people's lives. I've studied more so I can teach more. I've worker harder so I can be present for my Tribe. And I've loved every stinking minute of it.

So what will we create in the next 50? Where will we be and where will the Tribe be? We are creating goals, plans and actions so that every woman feels as good physically and mentally as I do. Dream big, baby. I am - lunch with Oprah is at the top of the list.

Today I talk about the time in my life when I decided to take responsibility for my life and my weight. I had to start really understanding WHY I was eating and really examining what benefits I found in overeating.

The brain seeks pleasure to avoid pain. The problem with this is that we EAT to avoid the pain in our life.

Why is THAT a problem?

Because food doesn't comfort you. There's no benefit to eating through pain. It's the habits that you create to avoid the pain that are the real painful part. And it's the extra weight that you carry around that causes the pain.

Then the realization hits. The way you are living is more painful then the pleasure you are finding in food.

Logan was a baby. When I took a good look at my life at 29, I realized that this was not what I wanted for him. I didn't want him to go through the depression and the bullying. I decided it was time to make my old lifestyle as painful and unappealing as possible.

So how do you do that?

You just start telling yourself the truth about what your eating is really doing to you. In the moment, it makes you forget - it gives you temporarily relief. But what it really does is give you shame, a bloated belly, and a body that hurts to move.

You have to quit making it seem like food is the answer or food is your best friend. It may be giving you temporary relief, but it's not doing anything for you long term.

I'm a busy lady just like you. I can tell you one thing:I attract women who get a lot done and feel they have no time left for themselves.

That's why I want to talk about self-care a minute.

I decided a long time ago that self-care was not optional. But, I also don't define it like most people.

Self-care, for me, is taking time each day to clean out my brain. I need to know what's going on in there that needs re-directing. Just because I wake up in a sour mood doesn't mean the day is shot. It means I need to ask myself to generate the feelings I want for the day.

 

To me planning and assessing is self-care. The ultimate form of self-care is my mental health. Knowing I am prepared for my day, thought ahead, decided how I was going to show up for the world is the best gift I give myself.

Sure I get my hair done, go out to dinner every now and then, but the real form of self-care I love is taking a few minutes to just figure out how I am CHOOSING to show up each day in thought and action. What will I eat? When will I shower? What times are my meetings? What podcasts and books will I listen to on my drive? What do I want to feel at the end of the day?

That's self-care.

When you start to feel bad that you are last on your list...don't. Waste of time.

Take a look at what you might be doing now that IS for you. Game your brain. Stop telling yourself that just makes you feel terrible. Heck, I count doing dishes and getting coffee ready as self-care. One, I love me a clean dish to eat off of. Two, I really like that coffee waiting on me like a sweet friend each morning.

I challenge you to ask one question of yourself? How can I care for me today? Get creative momma!

Don't play victim to life. How you respond to your life is your responsibility.

In our podcast today you will hear a lot about how we care for ourselves. I share a story about Logan and start bawling. Warning! And poor Kathy didn't know it was coming. I swear she looked at me and was like, "Holy crap! I think I have to take over the podcast." LOL.

If you want to lose weight and drink there are a few things you must know.

First, keeping up your current booze habit is no different than saying I want to eat cake and lose weight.

You CAN have wine and you can have cake...

But you CAN'T have either of them or both whenever you want. That's the real problem. Are you having cake and booze when you want it or when you plan it?

The best way I know how to teach you to lose weight is to do these THREE SIMPLE things:

Know what you are eating and drinking.
Before you give up food and alcohol get real about what you currently eat, how often, when, and why. When you have this information you are READY to move to the next step.

Decide when you will have eat and drink things you know SLOW down weightloss. Decide, plan, commit, and no extras.
That means if you plan three glasses of wine Friday and Saturday you don't get a fourth and you surely don't get it on Wednesday when the day was bad.

Assess your week.
We all want to lose weight and we all want to do it in a way we can keep eating and drinking the way we like.

That's not ever going to work. Sorry.

But, you don't have to "give up" everything you love. If you want to keep booze you can. You just have to plan it and when you weigh in each week you get to decide if the results are what you want. If not, you choose to plan less. If they are, you choose to keep on track.

Nowhere in here you are deprived. It's just you planning, committing, assessing and choosing. That's it.

I go deeper into how I've gone from drinking three nights a week to once a week (without tons of deprivation and crying)...and seen an extra 5lbs of booze bloat naturally go away the last couple of months.

I, too, was in the trap of drinking when I wanted and wondering why I was up 8lbs! LOL. Yes. Me!

The podcast is pretty honest about how even 13 years into maintenance I can get sloppy. But, I also teach you how I decided to get my act together in an honest way that taught me good habits. And when I teach me I teach YOU, too.

Do you ever dread weighing yourself?

I had a PNPTribe member call weighing in an "emotional rollercoaster."

When you weigh in you do you know what you are ACTUALLY weighing? Probably not. If you did then you would have zero problems getting on that scale no matter how you showed up with food this week.

Your issue might be you are weighing your self-judgement. That's a waste of time. Ever thought these things?

"I'll never lose weight."

"OOOHHH I was so good this week!!!!"

"I lost 2lbs. but I have like 78lbs. to go."

"I lost 2lbs. so tonight I can have that extra margarita and chips."

That's weighing your self-judgement. You are weighing how you think about that number instead of the your body weight. Those thoughts are not helpful.

Here's what you must know...

When you weigh the only thing the scale reflects is your fat, muscle, water, and organs.
Each of those are responding to hormones, your actions, and the barometric pressure.

Yes, weather and the temperature of the room you weigh in can move the number up or down a pound or two.

That's why shaming yourself is USELESS! What if you decide you are a failure and chug a doughnut after a good week because the bathroom was two degrees cooler than last week?

Did you just go "Oh no!" Girl, I've been there, too.

The most important thing to do prior to weighing (besides getting naked after you poop) is to think, "No matter what I weigh I will take an honest look at how I ate this past week."
This is the REAL DEAL. Your weigh-in must be a trigger you to honestly assess what went RIGHT and what you can improve this week. That's how you will lose weight FAST. Not with crazy shakes. With knowledge.

Your weight should NOT ever be a trigger to cry, shame, or eat. That's USELESS.

I want you to become a master at feedback. Why? The more you move into the mindset of appreciating feedback from your scale and food journals the more weight you will lose.

Losing weight requires you to get out of your head and into your details.
