TME Podcast Season 4, Ep 24 Are You Successful or Unsuccessful?
31:45

Are you successful or unsuccessful? Sometimes there are degrees and shades of gray when trying to answer this question as a music educator. In this post we talk about what it means to be truly successful based on Grant Cardone's book "The 10X Rule, The Only Difference Between Success and Failure." Although this book was not originally created for music educators, it makes some tremendously motivating points that can certainly aid in growth oriented teachers, students and really anyone.

I discovered Mr. Cardone's book "The10X Rule" just before the pandemic began and loved it so much I bought the physical book, audio book and searched for his other books to learn more. Although we are only going to touch on a sliver of how the information found in this book can help music educators grow professionally, I highly recommend checking it out.

The late summer brings a magical time of year when you hear the immortal phrase, "Welcome to Band Camp!" For many music educators and teens this is a special time of year when there is promise of competition, skill development and accomplishment. For some programs, band camp is a time to prepare for parades and competitions. For others this is a time to prepare for spirited football game performances and a chance to get your groove on. Regardless, this time of year is a chance to showcase excellence in music making and today we will discuss "Basic Scoring Techniques for the Marching Band."

18:03
All educators are tasked with communicating with parents at one point or another. Being in sync with your workflow and knowing the appropriate reasons for contacting parents helps the effectiveness of helping foster a child’s development.

Often, we only contact parents if there is some sort of behavior problem and only if it is necessary. However, studies show that conveying “good news” to parents is just as important. Consequently, teachers cannot rely on parents contacting them. The benefits of regular communication will pay off ten-fold when we, as educators, take the extra time to keep parents involved and informed.

The mouthpiece construction of metal and plastic contributes to the overall quality of the trumpet sound. If you consider the possible combinations of how these elements may be combined, you have thousands of options. This choice in mouthpieces is essential in the advancement in trumpet player growth and should be decided based upon the demands of the player.

TME Podcast Season 2, Ep. 15 Tips for Brass Tone Production
12:47

The number one most important musical element in performing is quality tone production. In this post, we will discuss issues and tips for brass instrument tone production. Each instrumental family produces sound in different ways. It is helpful to review what is necessary to create a fantastic tone, whether it is to create the perfect buzz, manipulate how to breathe, or change the mouthpiece pressure. A characteristic sound instantly sets apart the impact a brass musician has on his or her audience and the overall musical experience.

Several factors contribute to creating a quality tone. It is conceivable that two players on the same type of instrument, with the same model of the mouthpiece, can create two very different tone qualities. Sound production differences include the size and shape of the oral cavity, the breath supply, how well it is supported, the openness of the throat, and the lip aperture.

With the invention of new music distribution and processing services so has come new challenges with music education and business industries.

Most importantly, as music educators, we must stay up-to-date with understanding these technological changes and protect the intellectual rights of musicians. By abiding and filing complaints of mandatory copyright laws, we help preserve the discipline of our artform.

TME Podcast Season 1, Ep 6 - Do Drummers Count
04:19

Do Drummers Count?

This is a question that can be answered in many different ways. As a middle band director, I have had several drummers or more, specifically percussionists, fill my band rooms year after year. I say, percussionist because a drummer implies that we are teaching students who only play drums. It is my responsibility to educate the whole child and thus teach all of the appropriate percussion instruments. Many of these instruments are much more than just drums such as keyboards, electrophones, and a variety of “world instruments.”

Regardless if you are a percussionist in a school or are a middle-aged man playing the drum set, you matter. Musicians far and wide have made jokes about drummers throughout the ages. The truth is without drummers or percussionists music would be empty.
